OK, I get it now. At first it sounded like maybe AT&T had a policy of charging more for female accountholders, which would have been crazy, probably illegal, but wouldn't necessarily surprise me. A prior beef I had with a phone company (I think it was when AT&T was Ameritech in Wisconsin) was when they abridged phone book entries for two-surname households without advance notice. Previously the SO and I had each had an entry in our name, with the other's included: i.e. Hawing and Significant Other's Name; Significant Other and Hawing. I was moderately angry to find my name listed by itself (which suggests to the world that I live alone and might be easier pickings for troublemakers). It wasn't because we are unmarried; the same thing happened to my married coworker whose wife kept her surname. It wasn't a new policy of one person per entry, because married couples with the same surname were listed jointly as before. We resolved it by removing my entry, so those of you who still consult "phone books" can't find me there anymore. Of course, in some communities you have to specifically request printed white pages now.
