  1. But economics (and service time) are an issue for the big league club. They're not competing this year. Why burn a year of service time when he's not stretched out enough to throw more than 150 innings, for one thing, and still is fighting with consistency to routinely make it into, and finish the 6th inning? That may not matter to you as a fan, but it certainly does to the club when looking at the long term picture of who will be manning the rotation 4-5 years from now. Cost certainty 3-4-5 years from now. All of those things matter, and tossing a year of service time, and a year of Hader's prime years away to FA just to win a possible 3-4 more games this year in an already lost year is horribly short-sighted.
  2. Let's be honest though. It was "started" by the Rangers hitting Bautista with a pitch in his at bat. The slide at 2nd base was retaliation for the HBP. I'm not saying the aggressive slide was right or ok, but the series of events was started by the HBP. (One might say that the series of events was started by the bat flip in the playoffs last year, but this thing where grown men have to resort to violence because of hurt feelings is super old and tired) I know I'm very much in the minority but I enjoy watching bench clearing brawls and beanball wars. However, the Rangers need to take off their diapers and put on their big boy pants about the whole bat flip thing. It was a big moment in the playoffs for a team that hasn't had success in a long time. Get over it. See.... I just think getting mad because someone flipped a bat is the epitome of silliness. I love bat flips. Bat flips are great. Bat flips are the best.
  3. As much as I want to see this as well, I just don't think it is in the plans of the Brewers this season. We might see him come September, maybe. Hader has been struggling to get 5 IP per start. Something tells me he's not seeing Milwaukee until he gets his mechanics figured out a bit more and can throw 80-90 pitches and get into the 5th or 6th inning consistently.

  5. I know it's a super small sample size (13 IP, and only 43 batters faced) but Hector Rondon from the Cubs has a negative FIP. I don't think I've ever seen that before. Of the 43 batters he's faced, only four have reached base, and he's struck out 21 of them.
  6. I know Its the Padres but that was a nice start by Davies today.
  7. What's the history? I guess I'm missing something. I see he's got a bunch of negative tweets about/towards Gomez, but I don't know what the history is that you're referencing.
  8. Imagine if a writer were to write a quote on Allen Iverson phonetically? How would that go over? Carlos had every reason to be upset with how this was handled.
  9. Wow. That's seriously bush. Reporters "clean up" quotes from foreign players all the time to avoid that very thing. There's nothing wrong with doing it (in fact it's just a courtesy, for this very reason). What a bush move.
  10. Old timey batters were all about making contact and grounding out weakly to the 2nd baseman. Contact was more important than power. There's anecdotal evidence that some players had a lot of disdain for the new "power game" when they introduced the livelier ball in 1920, and swinging for the fences just wasn't a thing the way it is now. https://www.detroitathletic.com/blog/2014/07/17/ty-cobb-showed-he-could-hit-home-runs-well-anyone/
  11. Another guy that will get a 3 or 4 inning audition, and then shipped off to CO Springs?
  12. I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that the validity of the suspension will stand up due to the fact that he came back onto the field and was screaming obscenities at an umpire without provocation. I think that's the part that the league is punishing, moreso than the "coming back onto the field"
  13. Yeah, he's ......adequate for baseball, and that's really about it. Sometimes his homerun calls are strange. "He lifts a flyball to left..............AND IT'S GONE!" I understand that you as the viewer can see the action and the flight of the ball, but the tone of Lepay's voice usually provides very little information or indication of drama until it's already happened. I realize he's not a "baseball" guy, so often the things that are going on are probably not processing until they've happened, but it's still a (minor) gripe.
  14. I'm not advocating getting rid of him, I just think he (like Broxton) looks overmatched. Unlike Broxton, we can't send him down to get a month or two of everyday at bats to help in the "figure things out/get your head straight" process. It would be different if he was 22 or so and a little bit more towards the "developmental" side of things, but at 26, he's leaning more towards "he is what he is" and either can cut it, or he can't. As has been pointed out before, it doesn't make a lot of sense to stash the guy on the bench all year to put him in AAA for his age 27 season to get more seasoning. This is an extended audition to see if he can play at the big league level. He has to make do with the at bats he's getting, for better or worse.
  15. At some point, pitchers are going to just start throwing 1st and 2nd pitch get-me-over fastballs and start daring him to swing. He has a terrible approach, and he's overmatched against MLB pitching. I liked that we grabbed the kid and really wanted him to at least be a serviceable utility guy.... but he's not working out.
  16. Why is there no way for umpires to communicate to the fans and viewing audience what happened in baseball? The NFL has a guy that is mic'd up and explains stuff that needs explaining. In baseball they just go on their merry way and don't give a care in the world if the onlookers get an explantion as to what in the world just happened.
  17. The idea has previously been forwarded that we should piggyback starters and only have guys pitch 2 times through the order. I'm wondering who, aside from Nelson is even capable of getting through 3 or 4 innings without giving up 4 runs ( or more)
  18. A play being exciting shouldn't be trumped by the play being called correctly.
  19. They might have a shot at losing 100 games, but they'd have a REALLY hard time being worse than the Braves.... I mean the offense is pretty shotty as it is. I can't fathom a Braun/Lucroy/Carter-less offense with this pitching staff. If you take the top 3 hitters from any team they wouldn't be very good. But scooter, Santana and villar have been servicable. Neiuwinhuis and Presley have been decent in small samples. Hill has started to come around. Everyone is contributing lately, and the team is scoring runs.
  20. They might have a shot at losing 100 games, but they'd have a REALLY hard time being worse than the Braves....
  21. In a really odd flip (though it's still early in the season) the AL OPS is .713, while the NL OPS is .735. The Brewers have a .745 OPS as a team, which is nice to see. Largely due to being 4th in the NL in walks.
  22. At some point, I'm going to assume someone in the dugout is going to have to take Walsh aside and say "Hey, that .350 OBP is great and all, but that .100 SLG% isn't cutting it" As others have said, he's going up to the plate not with the mindset of "getting on base" but instead "I'm going to take a walk". I realize OBP is the more important part of OPS, but if your SLG% is on the lower end of .150, you're not really creating value as an offensive player.
  23. It doesn't matter who plays first base. Have Lucroy play first base, or Andy Wilkins, or whoever. This season, it absolutely doesn't matter, as they're going to win about 65 games. If someone comes at you with a top 50 prospect + some lower level high-ceiling guy or 2, who's playing 1st base for the last 80 games of a tap-out season absolutely shouldn't matter. I like Carter a lot. (Big power, high walk guys are my "thing"), but if someone comes at me with a great offer, I wouldn't hesitate to trade an almost 30 year old who's going into arbitration, just because I don't have a 1st baseman. I don't care if Andy Wilkins comes up and hits .200 for the rest of the year with 4 homeruns in 300 at bats. If someone offered us a top 50 or top 75 and then some.....I'd snap it up and hang up before they changed their minds.
  24. My expectations won't change based on either a 4 game winning streak or a 5 game losing streak. The team is what it is. Every team has hot and cold streaks. Even a team that loses 100 games is going to have a few 4 or 5 game winning streaks (or longer) over the course of 162 games. I didn't expect the rotation to be this horrifically bad, so if anything, my expectation that they could win 74-75 games might have been too cautiously optimistic.
