  1. I expect Carter to hit .220-ish, with power. And walks. Which will be fine for this year.
  2. I don't think the old regime would have viewed him any differently. Wilkins is this year's version of Matt Clark and old regime never went overboard to keep him in the big leagues. I think..... and I may be wrong here, but my guess is that he's referring to the fact that Counsell spoke very highly of Wilkins during ST. Counsell basically said Wilkins is the "next guy up" if something happens to Carter injury-wise. (or possibly if Carter falls flat on his face.) I'm really not all that worried about Andy Wilkins getting too much playing time. If it happens it's because Carter is hurt, or sucking so bad that he's not justified in playing. Even if Wilkins does play, he's not a long term option, so I'm not going to get too bent out of shape over it.
  3. In what is sure to stun most Brewer fans, the self proclaimed arbiter of all unwritten rules, Brian McCann says celebrating and bat flips are "where the game is at" and the game is changing and people need to change with the game. http://www.nj.com/yankees/index.ssf/2016/03/yankees_cc_sabathia_brian_mccann_bat_flip_showboat.html
  4. I've seen it compared to a giant travel trailer, a sausage wrapped in foil, and a spoiled banana. Not very flattering.
  5. Braun and Santana are rock solid locks to be starters (I mean......it goes without saying for Braun) I'd really like to see Broxton, Liriano, and Flores make the team. They are guys with a shot at being something in the future. Flores can see some at bats at first base, and whoever isn't the starter in CF (ostensibly Liriano) will also get playing time backing up both Braun and Santana and CF. Plenty of at bats for all these young guys.
  6. I really want Broxton to make the team. He's really toolsy, and I like that he takes a lot of walks.
  7. Feelings hurt = injure someone = that's ok.
  8. This is not anything we didn't already know (and not starting a separate topic, because it's very similar), but Colby Rasmus says the Cardinals entire organization is a bunch of old 50 year old men. http://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/mlb/2016/03/12/colby-rasmus-houston-astros-st-louis-cardinals/81686706/?hootPostID=f5ea29b340e6f263bb594c509907d57d
  9. In his last 10 games, Giannis is averaging 20 pts, 9 boards and 8 assists. Guy is becoming a super star.
  10. Of this, there can be no doubt. They even flip bats for long foul balls, and I heart that.
  11. I can appreciate the different perspective on that. (I'm 41, fwiw), but I get that the game is changing. It doesn't bother me at all. What really got me is his "------ nerds are ruining the game" with an F bomb or 3 in every sentence. His insistence that you have to have played the game to be in an administrative position is a strange, antiquated notion that I simply don't get. Not only will I say I don't agree with him, I'll just say he's wrong, and move on.
  12. "Old man yells at cloud" was what Deadspin labelled the article they had about it.
  13. http://espn.go.com/newyork/mlb/story/_/id/14943065/goose-gossage-rips-jose-bautista-toronto-blue-jays-nerds-ruining-baseball Goose Gossage hates bat flips, nerds, Buster Posey, and Ryan Braun Also, Goose is apparently incapable of formulating a coherent thought without swearing 45 times.
  14. I'm 41, so I grew up without a smart phone. We played baseball at the park all day, and went home at sundown. We didn't have computers or tablets, we had an Atari 5200, and spent most of our time outside in the summer. But I have to ask......... why does everyone care what other people do with their time so much? "BACK IN MY DAY........." Why is everyone so preoccupied with judging the quality of everyone else's personal time, space, family time, and lives? Enjoy your leisure time the way you like, and let someone else enjoy theirs the way they see fit. This is the world we live in now, whether people like it or not. (and judging by the bulk of the comments it's "not") We are connected to devices now, and that's the way it is. Even without phones and tablets, it's 100% impossible to pay attention at a game 100% of the time. It's absolutely impossible. I go to concerts and record 3 or 4 songs, and take 30-40 pictures. I go to ballgames and take a bunch of pictures. In 2012 I went to my (first ever!) Packers game and about filled an SD card with pictures and video. As others have said, it's just as easy to be distracted with your face buried in a game program, talking to a friend, getting a hotdog..... etc, etc, etc, etc. People just want to hate on technology..... well, just because. Give the kid a break.
  15. Yes. The Mets simply renew his contract at whatever dollar value they choose, and he has no say in the matter. Of course, he can choose to simply not play if he wishes, but I think he's not going to do that, as he'd lose a year of service time, and then he'd REALLY be screwing himself over.
  16. This is the way the system works. These guys know this before they get to the majors. Is it entirely fair? Probably not. They are playing their "best" years before they get to free agency, but this is the system, and the union agrees to it. If you don't like it, don't play baseball.
  17. Reading the article, he acknowledged that he fired 8 shots from a handgun in an enclosed garage (in a building in which there were known to be people) during the "incident". Here's a solution if you don't want to get suspended. Don't choke people, and don't randomly shoot guns indoors when you're pissed about stuff.
  18. This is absolutely crazy to think about. After home losses to WIU and Milwaukee, and a 1-4 start in B10 play, keeping the streak of "top 4" finishes intact seemed unthinkable. It's still a task, as they're still technically also tied for 5th, and they have a road game at Purdue left on the docket, but to be in this position after the start of the season is a fantastic accomplishment.
  19. I'm totally ok with this. I know some old school guys will hate it, as going into second base with the intention of breaking a shin bone is the "way the game is meant to be played" I just disagree. I don't think a play like this http://stream1.gifsoup.com/view5/20151010/5257493/dirty-slide-o.gif needs to be in baseball. Utley never so much as even attempted to secure the base. I'm totally ok with hard-nosed baseball if in the way you play it, you're actually making a baseball play (attempting to secure a base). There's none of that going on in that particular play.
  20. I mean, how often are they going to play the guy at 1st base? This is kind of a moot point. He may get 15 starts at 1st. It's not like he's going to start over there a bunch. Playing him at 1st occasionally isn't the end of the world. Are we just arguing to argue about something?
  21. http://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/garvest01.shtml
  22. I liked Perez, just wish he would take (a lot) more walks. If he develops a touch more power he could be a decent utility guy.
  23. Smith is a very well-known quantity. He doesn't need to pitch well in a handful of meaningless ST games for other GM's to know what they're getting. If he gets traded, it's because the right trade came along, not because of 5-6 good ST innings.
  24. Based on everything that's been said, I think it seems likely, but it is not yet actually confirmed.
  25. Giannis with the triple double last night. (and just a huge game overall) Parker has been really good lately, and playing some actual defense. It really doesn't matter if the Bucks go on a run and make the playoffs, but it's just starting to feel like these 2 guys are coming together now.
