  1. You know we're in trouble when a pitcher with an ERA near 6 is one of the better ones on the staff. ERA for relievers this early in the season isn't really indicative of talent level. One or two bad outings can blow the ERA out of the water.
  2. I believe (and hope) that Stearns is the type of guy who won't over react when we have the inevitable 5 or 6 game winning streak and think "hey we're in this thing!" They're not ready to compete. Not by a long shot. This pitching staff is butt-awful and trading anything of consequence from the minors to get short contract vets to compete now would be an in redibly short sighted move. Nobody has suggested this (yet) but.....this team just isn't there yet. Interesting and entertaining? Sure. Compete worthy? Nah
  3. What about righty on righty? Phrasing. http://www.desipio.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/11/archer-phrasing.jpg
  4. I was quietly excited about Villar right when we grabbed him. His MLB numbers so far had been nothing special but he just looked like the type of guy who could have a decent/breakout year if given the chance to play every day. If he could put up a little more pop, he could be a legit 3B candidate for when Arcia takes over the SS position long term.
  5. Counting Gennett and Niewenhuis as "starters", 7 of the Brewers 8 starting position players have an OPS of .750 or higher, excluding only Aaron Hill. When Gennett comes back from injury (and assuming he continues to hit well), the Brewers should be able to field a very competent offense. Also, Colin Walsh has a (.389!?!) OBP. As a bench player/PH, he's not a bad option if you just need a guy to take a walk and get on base late in a game.
  6. Melvin the GM (the baseball guy) could have (presumably) done more to convince the owner "look, this isn't going to work". I understand that Melvin the person most assuredly wanted to keep his job, but Mark A doesn't seem like an unreasonable idiot. He just seems like a really exuberant fan who owns a baseball team. Melvin seems like the guy who just went along with it and said *sigh........"fine, I'll see what I can do". Who knows though? Maybe he DID try to tell Mark A that the Titanic was sinking, and a rebuild was necessary sooner rather than later, but it doesn't really seem like that's the case.
  7. I think it's fine to bring in guys like Carter or (for example, Mat Latos) for what he's costing and say "if he plays well, we'll see what we can get" It gets dicey when you see proposals for guys who have multiple years and 75 mil+ left on contracts, coming off terrible seasons. Those are not good flip candidates.
  8. You win the internet today Monty. Your whole post is great, but this part of it really needs to be emphasized.
  9. I watched the replay of this. Ichiro was picking the ball up out in medium left field before Walsh even rounded 3rd base. I know Ichiro is like 63 years old, but he can still throw. The game is now 11-1. I know you never stop trying to score, but good lord. At 11 - 1, why even take the risk of getting a guy thrown out at the plate?
  10. Well... PEDS aren't just for making you bulkier/bigger/stronger. (which I understand everyone knows). Sometimes it's just a recovery thing, especially during a 162 game season which is a heavy grind on the body. Gordon is 28, which I understand he's not an "old man", but when you start to age and get closer to 30, your body doesn't recover the way it did when you were 19- 20 years old. Sometimes PEDS are just used for recovery and not building up and making you bigger. Truth be told, there isn't a single guy who would be named at this point who would surprise me.
  11. Dee Gordon suspended 80 games. http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/15425125/dee-gordon-miami-marlins-banned-80-games-peds-violation Hmm...... Barry Bonds is the hitting coach...... :D
  12. I think this is a good point. Stearns grabbed the kid because he felt he had enough value/talent to carry on 25 man all year. He's not a developmental guy that they're carrying so they can shove him back in the minors for 2-3 years.....he's someone that Stearns thinks can play. At some point at age 26, he's going to have to be given a sink or swim opportunity for an extended period. With Scooter on the DL, this might be the time.
  13. If Perez could EITHER draw a walk OR hit for a bit of power, he'd have some use, but as it is he's just a singles hitting guy who has crappy OBP. He's versatile, and he plays OK defense wherever you put him, which is useful, but that's about it. I just wish the guy would display a little pop (although he did have 15 doubles last year in 230 at bats).
  14. Jungmann, Davies, and Peralta have been extremely bad, so..... The Brewers pitchers give up a lot of walks/9, give up a lot of hits/9, give up a TON of homers, and don't strike out a lot of batters. I mean...... what else can you say? I'm sure there's analysis that breaks it down, but as a whole group they're just bad across the board. I think a lot of people (myself included) were thinking (and hoping) that Jungmann's late season collapse was just a dead/tired arm, and hey, it's still early and he can maybe pull out of this. It's just four starts. It's just concerning that his velocity is down. But Jungmann is only one small piece of the puzzle. This whole staff aside from Nelson and a few of the relievers has been pretty bad. It also doesn't help that we're missing Smith and Knebel.
  15. I'm really disappointed that Jungmann has been as bad as he has been. I thought (or was hoping) that he was just tired later in the year last year. So far his velocity is down and he just doesn't look good. Davies hasn't looked good either. In keeping with the 'Positive' vibe though, I'm hoping it's just early season stuff and not the league figuring these guys out. I want Jungmann to be a decent 3-4 type guy, and Davies to be a decent 4-5.
  16. I don't think Segura is suddenly a .900 OPS hitter. He's off to a good start and I wish him well. Judging a trade by how well the player does for the other team is a fool's gambit anyways. You take what you take and you move on. Anderson has had a few good starts (and a bad one) and .....well ok, Hill has been really bad. The other side of this coin is that Johnathan Villar so far has been really good for us. I know he wasn't part of that trade, but he's playing every day and putting up a .400 OBP. Trades don't exist in a vacuum, and even when Villar gets displaced by Arcia, if he continues to be a .750+ OPS hitter, he'll be a valuable trade piece or a 3B/2B utility guy, or SOMETHING of value to this team.
  17. I don't think they want a bye, for a few reasons. They'd have to play baseball into the middle of November (which they don't want to do), or they'd have to shorten the season to 154 games (which they absolutely are not going to do, for revenue reasons). Secondly, that puts one team on the shelf for up to a week after the regular season, and I think a lot of players (and especially pitchers would be against that. That's fine for football teams, but baseball players want, and maybe even need to stay in a semi-regular routine.
  18. He also addressed Goose Gossage's comments in particular. He seems like a very forward thinking guy. A good quality to have for a commissioner IMHO. http://bleacherreport.com/articles/2634642-mlb-commissioner-rob-manfred-comments-on-celebrations-and-unwritten-rules Gossage's mustache must be bristling right now.
  19. Only 1 game out of the WC. Braun, Carter and Gennett are mashing. Santana, Lucroy, and Villar are hitting well enough to be playing every day. 6 of our 8 starting position players are hitting well. It's just the rest of our offensive players are hitting pretty "blah".
  20. I went back and listened and I hear a hissing noise... very very briefly. Many of the doors in the SW universe (as well as a lot of the hydraulic/pneumatic machinery) make hissing/gasping noises like this when they are opening/closing or operating. I think this is just a sound effect and nothing more. If it was Vader, I think it would be more noticeable and not so quiet and background. If it was Vader, I think they'd want it to be more "out there" and noticeable. As it is, I think this is just a case of something sounding like something else. I have no doubt that we'll see Vader in this movie, I just don't think this is the tipoff.
  21. Tyrone Taylor is struggling to carry a .300 OBP at AA, and is in his age 22 season. There is absolutely no sense is starting to burn up his service time in a lost season and most likely watching him struggle to hit the mendoza line against major league pitching.
  22. Tony Gwynn was supposedly a master at shooting grounders between short and third, but I wonder if there's evidence to back that up? Also, if there IS evidence to back it up, I suppose we just have to say he was one of those outlier types who is the exception to the rule.
  23. As much as I don't want the DH in the NL, I would rather they do that than ban shifts, or make infielders stand in certain spots. That just seems entirely arbitrary and unnecessary.
  24. I don't hear it either and I've watched this trailer like 30 times. (and yet I still managed to call it Rogue Squadron....) Maybe this is a case of people hearing what they want to hear?!?
