  1. Just throw it away. Within a day or 2, the kid will (hopefully) have forgotten about it.
  2. Wrigley is 2nd to only a few as far as history goes, and I won't deny that. As far as walking around the place, yeah, it's cool, it's neat to think of all the history that's gone down there. Sitting and watching a game? The place is a dump to the 10th degree. The seats are tiny, the views at certain spots are pretty much awful, it's falling apart, and you pee in a trough. Pass.
  3. If batting average were a reliable tell all of a players offensive ability, I could buy that, but it's not. A guy who hits .280 with little power and doesn't take walks (David Eckstein) is a lot less valuable than a guy who hits .235 with 15+ homers and an OBP .100 pts or higher than his BA.
  4. The only thing that's easy to see with Branyan is that he's been undervalued by most baseball minds his entire career because of his low batting avg. and high strikeout rates. Batting average is one of the least useful indicators of offensive ability, and "productive outs" are one of the most overrated "intangibles" there could possibly be. The fact of the matter is that he's got a career OPS over .800, with platoon splits that really aren't all that terrible. The fact that the guy has been unable to stick on a major league roster, let alone never get a starting job just shows how much most baseball minds still rely on "old school" statistics to make their personnel decisions.
  5. How is that objective when nobody came close to saying that, or accusing others of saying something similar?
  6. Not having Braun in the all-star game because his OBP is low is like not buying a $25,000 new car because it doesnt come with a $2.99 air freshener. OBP wouldn't be the air freshener in a 25,000 dollar car. It would probably be the entire drive train. If you don't get on base, you can not score runs.
  7. Just because something has been a certain way for a really long time doesn't make it right. I'm sure the guys playing for millions of dollars want to know that their efforts decide games, not an arbitrary call by a guy who's 200 feet from a ball that could be 1" either way over/not over a fence.
  8. Over the course of a season, a guy won't GIDP a lot because he's not up with a runner in force position every time he's up, as is the case with the bases juiced. It stands to reason that the ratio of GIDP will be higher when you're using a sample that allows a force at every base.
  9. Brewers are 2 games over .500 despite having a -15 run differential. I don't think there's a big problem with "fundamentals".
  10. Probably not. He eats meat. You don't know that he does or doesn't. Just like I don't know if he could beat your brother up. Just like you don't know that you're in better shape than 99% of the posters here. Internet boasting makes a person super cool.
  11. A healthy, vegetarian athlete who can probably out-run, out-swim, out-bike, and out-lift 99% of the people on this message board. My big brother can beat up your big brother.
  12. Lineup protection is grossly overrated. Bonds had monster years in SF with not a lot around him. Major league pitchers make mistake pitches all the time. It's up to the hitter to capitalize, and Prince just isn't doing as good a job at it as he did last year. Like others have said, he had Johnny Estrada hitting behind him for quite a while, and he's about the antithesis of "protection".
  13. Rockford has cleaned up quite a bit. Still have some serious issues, but it's not nearly as bad as it used to be.
  14. At about 8 pm tonight my boss, another co-worker and myself were standing just outside the front door to our office (under an overhang) when a tree about 30 feet or so from the front door got completely smoked by lightning. The volume was simply intense. Speaking for myself, my ears were ringing for a good 15 minutes afterwards. Totally awesome. Wish I would have had a camera to take a picture for you guys.
  15. Driving in and shoveling snow surely sucks, but speaking for the awful things we can see people going through today, it's hard to imagine a snow storm being this utterly destructive.
  16. Given Branyan's walk rate, I think he'd be a good candidate for the 2 hole. Yes, he strikes out and that won't move a runner over, but "productive outs" are grossly, vastly, and overwhelmingly overrated.
  17. Dams failing everywhere according to the news. Lake Delton is 90% empty. Things are going to get pretty hairy around these parts the next few days.
  18. Piling extra innings onto Sheets (and probably Parra) just doesn't seem like a great idea to me. I'll be happy if they get 30 starts out of Sheets. Without Benny, this team is dead in the water.
  19. It's not what people can currently see with this stuff that bothers me .........(well yeah, it actually kinda does) but what they'll eventually be able to see with the technology improving at a rapid pace. The pics in my town are pretty new, and you can see and read the license plate on both vehicles in my driveway. I honestly don't know why this stuff is needed/useful for any reason other than to violate/invade someone's privacy. Yes, you can look at the location you're going to and have a good idea of what you're looking for, so it makes a place easier to find. It makes me wonder how the heck we got around without this stuff before the internet.
  20. So far so good for my basement. A small damp area in one corner......I can live with. This next band didn't look this strong an hour ago, and now the local weather says 2-3 inches expected just from this wave.
  21. Well, that round is over, though another band is on the way in. And of lord, is it thick out right now. You can more or less chew the air right now.
  22. Coming down at the rate of 1.5 to 2.5 inches per hour, this is ridiculous. And we're supposed to get successive waves of this stuff on and off through tomorrow night.
  23. I wouldn't at all be surprised if someone from the club kept tabs on messsage boards to see what the general fan mood is at a given time. I'd be utterly disappointed if they ever made player decision based on this stuff though.
  24. For a guy who sat on Bobby Cox's bench for as long as he did, and having run this team for as long as he has, it's mind boggling that the guy can be this unimaginative when it comes to in game management. Clearly, the Brewers could program a robot dog from Target with the necessary Yost-isms for who to put in at what times, and manage the game just as well. Yost's inflexibility is a detriment to the team. It's one thing to have a plan, but one has to recognize when it's necessary or beneficial to deviate from the script.
