  1. Yesterday a AAA lineup scored 7 runs on us, today a motley collection of relievers (most with ERA's over 6) have one hit the Brewers for 6 innings. Words can't even describe how amazingly pathetic that is.
  2. If we make it to tomorrow, I'll give my left.......something if Sveum doesn't put Hart in the lineup. He's worse than pathetic right now.

  4. We're almost through September, and we look lost at the plate.

  6. Sorry for not having a link, I don't remember where I read it (it may well have been here) but I recall hearing/reading that CC's agent "expected" Santana money. If we're going 6-7 years at 22+ per, I don't think the Brewers can hang in that range. I also don't know how prudent it'd be to throw enough money to buy a 3rd world country at a guy that's been excessively abused this year.
  7. I don't think it's completely out of line to question. I think the team is really reaching here, and is willing to do just about anything to try to nail down that wild card spot. Considering that Sabathia is probably just about running on fumes, I don't think it's a stretch to imagine that the Brewers would take a chance, if the doctors would only say "we're pretty sure he's ok" about Gallardo.
  8. Pence's BABIP came down from an ungodly .378 in 2007 to a more normal .305 in 2008 and his OBP came down to .315. Now if they move him back to CF you can deal with it, but he doesn't seem to have the talent for a corner position. He's obviously not hitting like he did as a rookie, but to call him a "bust" is a bit heavy in my opinion. 24 homers, 33 doubles, and 80 RBI with a .780 OPS is not a guy who's dragging your offense down. Tejeda is hitting .283 against RHers, but his OBP is still .309. Yes, his OBP is .309, but he does hit. NL avg of righties vs. righties is .315/.397/.711. Tejada is .313/.418/.731 vs righties, so his SLG makes up for the tiny drop from league average in OPS. Hall is worthless vs. righties. .243 OBP and a .562 OPS. That's worse than a backup catcher. To compare the 2 really isn't even close, again, in my opinion.
  9. There is some merit to playing for one run late in a game, and I think most would agree. Especially when it's Hall/Counsell and Kendall. However, one could also argue that pinch hitting for those guys with someone who can actually.......hit has just as much merit as bunting for the sake of staying out of a double play situation.
  10. The guy's got a .785 OPS in his 2nd year, with 61 extra base hits and he's a bust? Then Corey Hart is obviously a "bust" too. Tejada hit .283 vs righties and just a shade higher vs. lefties, so unlike Hall he's not completely worthless vs 2/3rds of the pitchers in the league.
  11. To heck with small ball. Give me Earl Weaver baseball everyday. 2 walks and a 3 run homer. And I'm going to add to FTJ's fallacy list. 5. Tiny scrappy white guys are good at "small ball". I get savagely sick and tired of Schroeder, Anderson (and Sutton before him) talk about how Counsell "is so good at moving runners over" and "is really tough with 2 strikes" and "can be counted on to make contact every time up there" Well, 41 k's in 240 at bats isn't awful, but that's not a great K rate for a guy that hits for no power at all. Also, with runners on this year, he's hitting .206 with a .255 SLG%. And if we throw Tony Gwynn out there next year, that's exactly what we'll be getting.
  12. I think for most players, especially one that hits for more power than say, anybody not named Juan Pierre or Craig Counsell, cutting down on strikeouts means being less aggressive at the plate. Would the resultant possible gain in OBP be worth the possible drop in SLG? There's really no way to measure that. If you look at the top 10 players in MLB in OBP this year, 7 of them have struck out 90 or more times.
  13. Thank goodness we've finally found the reason for the Brewers september slide.
  14. Halladay has pitched 220, 225 and 237 innings the last 3 years, I don't know if that means he's durable, or if he's on the verge of breaking down. That being said, he's a more than suitable replacement for Sabathia. Overbay and Rolen don't exactly excite me, as neither hits for a whole lot of power, and Rolen's really on the decline. The crew would be picking up a lot of salary in this deal, without giving up much salary in return. If the Jays would pick up a chunk of Rolen's, I might look a little more favorably on it.
  15. I'm always stumped by the thought that fast = leadoff hitter. Pierre is getting worse by the year at getting on base, which is far more important than being fast. The speed does you no good if it's only on base 32% of the time. And Corey Patterson on the Brewers with his sub .275 OBP? Please no.
  16. In 2008 Cameron has 19 AB's with a man on 3rd and less than 2 out, in those 19 at bats, he has 13 RBI (one being himself). The (mis)conception is that most non-strikeout outs are "productive", when that just isn't the case. Craig Counsell and Jason Kendall should be proof enough of that.
  17. I remember reading at least in a few places that JJ wasn't really all that excited about moving to third base. And Russ is right on. All things being equal (concerning length of service) an .850 OPS shortstop will make more money than an .850 OPS 3rd baseman.
  18. Even with not knowing the player's speed, the outfielders arms, so on and so forth, a guy who's been in the game as long as Iorg should know better than making the first out of the inning at home plate. Twice.
  19. I had to wait til I cooled off to post, I would have used language that probably would have earned me strikes 1, 2, and 3. Sveum.........more of the same. Counsell and Kendall batting back to back, in late innings of a close game when we need a run produced. Offense completely incapable of bringing guys home with one or none out. 6 runs should win the game, but there were multiple great opportunities to put this game away. Fail. For some reason we hired a 3B coach for the stretch run, let alone the fact the guy has never coached 3B before, ever. And what did he do today, he broke the cardinal rule, sent a guy, and made the first out of the inning at home plate. 2nd and 3rd, with nobody out, turns into nobody on and 2 out in the blink of a frickin' eye, without scoring either of them. Inexcusable. I know that baseball is a stat driven game, and give me a guy with a .900 OPS who has sloppy fundamentals over a scrappy .700 OPS battler who "knows how to play the game" 100 times out of 100. But this team really showed today a lack in doing the "little things" that win these close games. I live and die by the stats as much as anybody, but in the context of an individual game, the outs on the basepaths, the failure to bring RISP home with nobody out, it's just maddening. The worst thing is I already know getting jacked up for NEXT year is going to be hard, because despite what my rational mind knows (this year has nothing to do with next year), if things don't chane in some fundamental way, I'll expect a collapse if we're in it at the end.
  20. This is of course assuming that as Benny hits the wrong side of 30 that the injuries don't increase in frequency or severity.
  21. Well, he had an .831 OPS at the break, and an .822 OPS as recently as Sep 2nd, which would have been a drop of .009 points in that time. I didn't say he had been a world beater, and an .822 OPS would qualify (in my book) as "pretty good for most of the year", as that time frame encompasses that entire body of work, including hot and cold streaks. With his low OBP, he's still hit a ton of doubles and 20 homers, so his SLG to some extent gives him value. It's only in the last 2 weeks where he hasn't been able to do squat.
  22. Yeah, Hart's bat doesn't exactly play as a 1B right now. I realize that he was pretty good most of the year, but he had to carry a pretty low OBP all year to have it dip to .310 after a 3 week slump. 27 walks for a guy that has played almost every day in the middle of september is plain bad, and that's putting it mildly.
  23. I didn't say I liked it, I'm going on the assumption that Sveum isn't much different than Yost, and is going to continue to play Counsell as much as possible. I don't like Kendall in the 2 hole, but he strikes out a lot less than Counsell, and he does carry a decent OBP (contextually speaking of course)
  24. Despite having a famously bad temper (so I'm told......I don't see it), I don't get violently angry at ridiculous crap that my teams do. During this meltdown, however, I did stop watching and listening to the games. I check the score at the end. I did watch most of the game last night however.
  25. Hart has a .310 OBP for the year, and .287 since the ASB. He needs less at bats, not more. Since I'm going to be critical, it's only fair that I throw my idea out there..... 1. Weeks/Durham 2. Kendall 3. Braun 4. Fielder 5. Hardy 6. Cam 7. Counsell/Hall 8. Hart Watching last night with Counsell hitting in front of Kendall with 2 outs makes me cringe. You absolutely have to get no less than 3 hits in a row to score a run with those 2 hitting back to back. I know Kendall is scuffling as much as anybody, but at the very least, splitting him and Counsell up means that if one or the other gets on, they might have a chance to score. I wouldn't want this lineup full time for a season's worth of games, but anything is worth trying right now.
