  1. I'm not going to look at game logs, but we've already had a handful of games where our starters haven't gotten out of the 4th-5th innings. If that doesn't improve, our bullpen is going to be burnt by August, regardless if we have 7 guys out there or not. Brewcrew1114, my comment was not about the way the pen has been pitching, but more the AMOUNT they've been pitching. I agree, by and large, aside from a few ugly performances by Hernandez, and an early outing by Ford, the bullpen has been ok.
  2. Yeah, right now I'm thinking about all the people that were saying this rotation will be better than the Cards rotation, and I just gotta laugh. Dusty Baker doesn't take his starters out til the 9th, we're LUCKY if our starters get INTO the 5th inning. As bad as they are, we won't have to worry about Nedly burning up our starting pitching. The BULLPEN on the other hand.......... http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif
  3. Wow, UGLY game all around. Lots of thoughts so far. Clancy, I'm still going to say keeping Kinney over Franklin was the right move, but I won't defend Kinney's spot in the rotation. With all the mondays off, move Oby into the 4th spot in the rotation, and put Kinney in the pen. Nice seeing the 2 bombs from Pods, but is anyone else a little bothered that he's hitting a LOT of flyballs? He's flying out to the track it seems at least once a game, and he doesn't have the kind of power that would justify swinging for the fences all the time. Hall's D, yeesh. As much as I like the guy, it's not hard to see why Counsell gets the majority of the playing time. Hernandez. The guy is just not impressive (so far), but he's still working with a really small sample size, so I suspect he's gonna get a bit more time to work things out. Uecker was talking about how Yost is not comfortable throwing him out there in close games. Might wanna wave fellas........this might be the last we see of .500 this year.
  4. Wish I knew what was wrong with the sound on my comp, this Indy bunch sounds like they're worth listening to! It's good to see Hardy and Hart adjusting quickly to the next level, this bodes well. Maybe Indy will quit moaning about us not sending them any talented players.
  5. I'm with you guys. From the games I've seen, and from what it sounds like on the radio, Pods is simply not playing well in the field. It's not like we have any better options of course, but it's kinda bothersome that he's regressing defensively. He certainly wasn't gold glove material last year, but he was what I'd call average, but this year he looks lost out there at times.
  6. Time of game......one hour and 58 minutes. At least it was over quickly. When was the last time a big league game ended in less than 2 hours?
  7. Like Clancy said, tough luck for Davis. Pitched a nice game against a tough offense and Oswalt on the other side is throwing a gem. Them's the breaks I guess. I had a feeling we were due for one of these, but it doesn't make it any easier to swallow. This has been one of the most boring games to listen to ever.
  8. I feel the same way about Yount as a coach as I did about Pete Rose the manager when people suggested Rose as the manager would put butts in the seats. WHO goes to a game to see the manager? The first base coach? I'd want to see Yount IF I went to the game, but I'm not buying the ticket because of him.
  9. RyDogg, if Doug gets hammered tonight, it won't be because he's not a good pitcher, it will be because he's unlucky. You should know that by now! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/roll.gif
  10. When Ben first came up, I noticed that he leaned back before every pitch, sort of how someone would if their lower back hurt. After watching him do it for a few games, I figured that it was just a "thing" he did, like so many pitchers do. Is this really a long time thing that he's been dealing with maybe? Or am I just grasping at straws?
  11. Like I said Clancy, I don't have a problem with Davis......yet, same with Kinney, same with Oby. I myself have predicted that Davis could put up an ERA of around 4.20 or so, but I also wouldn't be surprised if he gets knocked around. I pretty much feel that way about our entire rotation from 2-5.
  12. Greg, I was more or less using the numbers to point out that Davis isn't a victim of "bad luck" when he gets hit hard, he's just not that good of a pitcher. I wasn't really bringing Kinney into the equation, but I guess there is some point in it. Davis has 90+ career starts, Kinney has one seasons worth. Kinney is probably more likely to improve, while Davis MAY improve, I don't expect it. I'm not unhappy with DD in our rotation this year, it's just that when he gets shelled, I understand it's because he's just not very good, last September not withstanding.
  13. Clancy, I don't have a problem with Davis being in the rotation......for now. I DO have a problem with people pimping him to be something he's not based on one solid month from last year, compared to his career worth of mediocrity. A career ERA + of 98 means he's just a touch below average, which I don't have a big problem with. I'm just saying that when a guy like Davis gets touched up for 6 earnies in 4+, it's not because of bad luck, it's because he's just not that good.
  14. 1/16 of an inch, and that grand slam is a double-play ball Y'know, I knew when i was listening to the game today, before I ever got home, that at least one person, and probably more, were going to chalk this up as no more than bad luck. 1/16 of an inch, and that grand slam is a double-play ball. you could say that of just about any homer that's ever been hit in the history of major league baseball. It was a bad pitch at a terrible time to throw a bad pitch, no more, no less. It happens, and more often than not, it happens to bad or mediocre pitchers. Like I said in another thread, if we are going to let ourselves take away any negative stats that paint our players in a bad light, of course you can convince yourself that they're really good players. Of course, I could take away the Brewers 94 losses last year, because they were, after all, bad luck, and say that "Without those 94 losses the Brewers winning % was 100!" I suppose next time Davis gets shelled it will be because the wind was blowing out, and the time after that, the tide was out, causing a shift in gravity, therefore allowing the ball to travel further, and the time after that it will be because the ball was wound too tight, and the time after that.......... Sigh......... Davis is not a good pitcher. Up until September of last year, he was at absolute best a touch under league average. He's a soft tossing lefty who can't live in the middle of the strike zone, and left one out over the plate to a good hitter, which is something average/bad pitchers do, plain and simple.
  15. Too early to say the starters are just as bad as last year, and to be that bad, by the way, they'd have to be REALLY bad, especially to match the putrecence of Rusch, Quevedo, Manning, and Ford (when he was in the rotation). By default, the rotation should be at least MARGINALLY better, but I certainly think the DD we saw last September was more or less an anamoly. I still think he could hold together and put up around a 4.00-4.20ish E.R.A., but I'm not going to be surprised if he falls apart and gets yanked by July, either.
  16. I can't believe people are proclaiming Ben the 2nd coming after ONE (count em', one) dominating start. Yes it was fun. Yes, I hope he keeps it up. But lordy, let's let him do it for more than one six inning stretch, considering over his 3+ year career he's actually been a slightly below average pitcher. After ONE dominating start, putting him in the class of guys like Prior is just plain silly.
  17. Grieve sits because of his terrible D, which is why Clark plays. Ginter is not on par with Clark in the outfield, and on top of that, Clark is hitting right now.
  18. Davis' poor start notwithstanding, this game was lost from leaving a small village on the bases. Constantly getting guys on base, then hitting into twin kills, or just leaving them out there. This is what I am kinda expecting a lot of from this team this year. We have some good OBP guys, but not a lot of sluggers. I know it's been brought up before, but it bears saying again, SOMEONE has to be able to bring people in. Davis gets a mulligan I guess, that's a tough lineup, but 4 walks in 4 1/3 is way too many.
  19. There's been talk that the Miller Park gun reads 2-3 MPH faster than a "normal" gun. That being said, Sheets was obviously dealing today, whether he was throwing 95 or 98, he was unhittable, so I don't think the exact numbers matter nearly as much as the results.
  20. Funny, I would have thought that after the Cards series, where we didn't childishly retaliate for hitting batters, that the Brewers would be too "intimidated" to score after Jenks got hit. Just play the d**n game. The other stuff will sort itself out.
  21. Gotta agree with Al. Hitting the other teams batters in retaliation is petty. I know "that's the way it's done" and all, but I can't buy Clancy's line of "we're going to be intimidated" Do you think the Astros are looking at A) 2 of our batters got hit and we didn't retaliate? or B) We beat the hell out of the Cards in St. Louis to take 3 of 4?
  22. Back from the Snappers. (and finally warming up) Eveland looked pretty good. He cruised through 3, facing the minimum, but the wheels fell off in the 4th as the defense totally came unglued behind him. Nice pickoff by Eveland in the 1st. He has a very casual move to 1st that he disguised very well. I WAS right behind a Twins scout who had a gun (lucky me!) and Dana was around 85-87 on his fastball. Not a lot of movement on it, but it was pretty darn cold. He was always around the zone, and his curveball was decent. Change was ok, and it seemed like he was throwing it with the same arm motion as the fastball, though I can't be sure. Lou Palsmo: Ok, I know it was only one game, but he sure looks polished. Hit the ball HARD twice, and the first one he hit that was called an error, could have been called a hit, it was a pretty tough play. He stole Third EASILY, and drew a walk. No one tested him on the basepaths, so I can't say anything about his arm. Drew Anderson: Had several balls hit his way, and he did not seem to get a jump on ANY of them. On a long drive in the 8th inning, he stood for a good 2 seconds before he started moving, and resulted in a double. He did hit the ball hard a few times. Snappers struck out 14 times, 8 of them looking (4 by Steve Moss), which is a bit disturbing, especially all those backwards k's. They did walk 8 times though, and stole 4 bases without getting caught.
  23. I'll be in the 2nd row, right behind the plate. I like sitting there for the purposes of watching the pitchers, see what they're throwing, so on and so forth. Also, if anyone is clocking the pitchers, you can see the readings on the gun from there too. I almost always sit right behind the plate, and last year I got the extreme fortune of sitting right over the shoulder of one Jack Z. Kinda cool getting to peep over the shoulder and read his notes!!
  24. Well, Nedly sat Counsell and Moeller the day after they each hit a homer. Is that how we decide the lineup now? Hit a homer or go 3-4, you ride the pine?
  25. Sweet. I'll give the lowdown on Eveland when I get home tomorrow night. Looking forward to seeing this kid throw!
