  1. Ok, I agree with everything Greg said, except that it's "reasonable" to expect Gwynn to have over 3000 career hits. I say AGAIN, for everyone here. I never said Gwynn COULDN'T. But I'll quote Clancy here........ "if only because he raps a lot of doubles." That's not saying he could, or he might, or he has the potential. That's saying he DOES. And he doesn't. Not yet anyhow. I AGREE that he very probably will develop into a good hitter with decent gap to gap power, but it's another thing altogether to spout stats that don't exist. And again, "projecting" him as a 39 double 7 triple 9 homer per year guy is really expecting a whol lot. It would be great to see, and I DO think that he has the capability to put up a season like that. Assuming that he ought to though, that's another story altogether.
  2. "..........only because he raps a bunch of doubles." Tony Gwynn Jr. will probably add more power Ok, there's a BIG difference between "he does" and "probably will" Heck, everyone's optimistic about Gwynn's future, but at this point trying to project his spot in the order based on what he "might" do is a stretch, to say the very least. If I get to "project" any numbers I'd like, I'll have the Crew winning 115 games next year, as I'll have both Jenkins and Sexson hitting 50 HR's, Helms hitting 35, Ginter hitting 25 bombs and 40 doubles (which HAS been suggested by someone) and Podsednik hitting .350 with 75 swipes. Now, REALISTICALLY, because none of them have EVER reached ANY of those marks, how can I project those numbers? I can't.
  3. Well DUH Colby!! You didn't know that 8 doubles in 268 PA's in low A ball calculates out to 35-40 for a whole season in the bigs?!?! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/roll.gif Seriously, Gwynn at the very least DOES need to develop some gap to gap power, or he's just Kennard Bibbs with a famous name. This reminds me of the guy last off season who said we should sign Pudge because he'd hit "his USUAL 35-40 bombs" , which actually, he's never hit 40, so...... It's nice to just throw stats out there that you'd LIKE a guy to achieve, but he's got to actually DO it before you can just state it as a fact.
  4. Well, now that the "Hall to the outfield" talk has gone more towards right field, it makes a little more sense. I don't think he's got the skills to play ss next year, who knows, I could be wrong. I know that no one wants a "no hit" "all glove" shortstop, but if he's extraordinarily bad at it, he could cost far more runs than he creates over the average for a ss. I'd still make every maximum effort to keep Weeks at 2nd, because if he peaks at what the experts say he might, he'll be in a class of his own. Look at it this way: Weeks could be a *above average* RFer, or an extraordinary 2nd sacker. Knowing that it's easier to find production in the corner outfield spots than 2nd base, I'd rather go that way. I still like Ginter, of course, but projecting him to *35-40* doubles and 25 HR's is jumping the gun. He has 15 doubles in over 400 plate appearances, and I don't care what kind of calculator you use, that doesn't project to any more than 25 or so for a full season. Also......(whew) Helms can SAY he wants to hit 35 bombs next year, but it doesn't mean anything until he does it. It's nice that he's setting his goal high, but realistically it doesn't mean a thing.
  5. Even when Burnitz wasn't hitting, he used to draw a lot of walks and his OBP was always still pretty good. Last I checked this year it was a sizzling .307, to go with that stellar .244 BA. Same Burnie, different year: a good solid first half, followed by a dismal 2nd half that finds him hovering at .230 by the end of the year. I'll pass.
  6. Well, Weeks got a hit, but he's also made an error. His D is really going to be a work in progress.
  7. Nance Sucks, I don't give a hoot how many scoreless innings he pitched in Indy, this isn't triple A. (It just seems that way with Mark Smith, Jason Conti, and Pete Z playing every day.)
  8. WHAT are you talking about luzinski??? I thought I've read somewhere on this board that Davis is a legit # 2??? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/roll.gif
  9. I think I've seen enough of Luis this September. It's obvious he's overmatched, and like soooo many have said, probably fatigued. He's pitched 50 more innings than he ever has before, it's time to shut him down. Throw him out in the bullpen and let him throw an inning or 2 a couple times a week if you have to, but this is just painful.
  10. Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel writer Drew Olson on Midwest League MVP Prince Fielder: "The jury is still out whether he'll be the next Willie McCovey or the next Franklin Stubbs.'' Well, duh, Drew.
  11. I don't know how they pulled that one out, I second MassBrew........whew!
  12. I don't think I've ever seen Nedly that fired up. It WAS a ball, but (gasp!) I agree with Schroeder, Perez was baited by the ump. Ugly scene.
  13. Yeeeeeha Glendon. Good lord, let's PLEASE be done with the "keep Glendon next year" thoughts. Anyone think that maybe with Davis' pitch count, Yost should've had someone up going into the 8th inning? I know I was thinking it. Yes, he had a shutout going, but the pitch count was getting really high, they'd been getting on base ALL day. Hopefully they can hold onto this one.
  14. Sutton's an idiot. This game is already just about over. We'll be lucky to get 3 runs off Schmidt.
  15. I went to a Cubs/Brewers game in Wrigley last year, and I honestly had a blast. We were all wearing Brewers hats/shirts/whatever, so we announced our allegiance immediately. The people right all around us were great, not what we expected at all. In fact the guy right in front seemed really knowledgable of all the Brewers players, and said he had gone to the game specifically to see Sheets pitch. There was a lot of friendly bantering going on, but it was all pretty much in fun. I'm sure it's different when they're in their own place, as you're more comfortable and so on, but it was a good time. Then, I go to a Cubs/Brewers game later last year, surrounded by Cub fans, and it was miserable. They were bombastic, insulting, and made it hard to enjoy the game. Maybe it was just a bunch of jerks. Who knows.
  16. Gotcha. I wanted to go to more games this year, really. Every time I thought about it though, I just couldn't muster up the desire. I did know what you meant, more or less. Some of my friends that are more "casual" brewer fans have stopped listening and watching pretty much altogether. They'll ask me what's been going on, but that's about all.
  17. a good number of those bandwagoning morons from our state I agreed with everything in your post, except that Mike. I consider myself a pretty hardcore fan. I went to about 40 games in 01, about 10 last year, and ..........three this year. I went to see the Snappers about a dozen times though. Bandwagoner? Nah, smart consumer. That's all. I still listen on the radio or watch every game that I can. I check this site and others almost every day. It's not a money issue either. When the product quality improves to meet what I demand for my entertainment dollar, I'll start going to more games. Call me a fair weather fan if you will, it's everyone's prerogative how to spend their money. Maybe I'm being a bit harsh on your post: like I said, I agreed with all the rest of it. I just hear the bandwagon term a lot, and I disagree with the term when people care about the team, they just don't spend money on it.
  18. Did Luis hit 90 at all tonight? I know his fastball is high 80's low 90s' but it didn't look like it had any "zip" to it. Maybe it was just the nerves. I don't care if you play baseball, LaCrosse, field hockey, curling, football, or rugby, ........it goes without saying....... if you get good players, you'll kick but.
  19. And no one's even mentioned that it's 13 for 15 now http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif DuWayne --- still the new guy
  20. I recall days of Phil Garner's double-triple switches and using 3-4 relievers per inning, and ya know what? Besides a few things here and there, Yost is ok. Bench the old guys. Use the pen a bit better. Other than that, he's been alright.
  21. Ok, now I know Schroder's down right dumb, but as he's talking about guys trying to play their way onto the team next year, he mentions Keith Ginter? He hasn't done enough yet that he still has to "fight" for a spot. I know it's just Schroeder, and no one with any influence, but cripes.
  22. Inexpensive, in his prime, and better than league average. He is the epitome of what we need to be looking for, not expensive FA's who are below] league average for their positions. I've got a few ideas who that was targeted at Al, (not me, no one reads my posts!! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif ) and I'll agree with you, to an extent. Al, and a lot of guys here are advocates of going cheap, and I agree, with guys like Ginter, Obermueller, Podsednik, and even Doug Davis. Cheap and young, not cheap and 30+. I don't mind going cheap if I know it's going somewhere, and the guy in mind has at least some sort of ceiling, or at least the ability to be a league average guy. Good start to the game, nice 3 run lead for Wes right off the bat.
  23. If he keeps it up, and if he holds up against the Cards and Astros, then we may have a decent #2 starter. Well clancy, at least I got you to admit that much. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif I like what I see from Davis so far, I'm just trying to temper a lot of enthusiasm with some reality.
  24. Davis did well yesterday, and very good overall since joining the Crew. Remember though, that 2 of his starts were against completely stripped down teams and the Cubs aren't exactly offensive stalwarts either. Granted, 3 ER in 4 starts is great no matter how you slice it, but before we give Davis anything, let's see how he performs against the Astros and Cardinals. At this point I think he's earned a spot in the rotation, though not the # 2 guy Clancy wants him to be. I don't want to compare him to Loaiza either. Those sort of things don't happen everyday. It would be nice, but highly unlikely, like.....1 in 100. Just having a cut fastball doesn't guarantee success like Loaiza's had. Glendon Rusch proves that.
  25. Yikes. Kinney want's to blow this one I see.
