  1. Ok, that's fine, and I agree that a lump sum of stats don't tell the whole story. However, over the course of a 162 game season, OPS, ERA, K/9 etc, etc, etc, WILL tell you how many wins you should expect based on those numbers. I don't give a rip how you slice it, a 5.19 ERA is bad. A 5.50 ERA is bad. It doesn't matter how you divide it up. In the case of Doug Davis, putting 12 runners on base in 7 innings is bad. As another poster put it, that's akin to whistling while you walk past a graveyard. It's nice that he got out of jams all day long, but that's just as much a matter of luck as anything else. Luck inevitably runs out, and balances out. You can't have a WHIP of almost 2 and keep expecting to give up 3 runs in 7 innings. Logic defies it.
  2. David, by dissing the Sweet Lou monicker, you're now going to labelled as a stubborn, obstinate, curmudgeony, old schooler who is resistant to change and ideas other than your own. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/roll.gif
  3. Clancy, read the other thread on pitchers for my thoughts on Franklin. He's making a fine lefty reliever for the Giants. RH batters are hitting him to the tune of a .976 OPS, lefties, only .566 OPS. He can get lefties out. That's what he should stick to. There are worse things a guy can do for a career. You can spout all you want about teams records in pitchers starts. And anyone with common sense will tell you that run support is NOTHING MORE than a measure of LUCK. You can call it Wayne Franklin's inspiring presence if you wish, but, and I apologize if this sounds rude, that's just plain silly, and it's wrong. I don't even LIKE Matt Kinney. I'm glad he's out of the rotation. I HOPE however, that MAYBE he can find a niche in the bullpen. I don't care HOW much trouble Franklin supposedly "got out of". His ERA last year was a terrible 5.50. He obviously wasn't getting out of trouble as often as you believe he was. Kinney's ERA was an almost as bad 5.19. He sucks this year, and accordingly, he's out of the rotation. If you want to CONTINUE to turn every thread that is about pitching into your personal Wayne Franklin/Matt Kinney debate, go right ahead, I was commenting on Doug Davis in this thread, and yet again, you bring up Franklin/Kinney. Quite frankly, I'm a bit mad at myself for letting myself get drawn into this rediculous debate once again. You hate Kinney. You love Franklin. We know. We get it.
  4. With the exception of his April 11 start ....... Oh, so now we get to remove whichever games or starts don't support the case for whatever player we're pimping?!?! Jeez, with that criteria firmly in place, I'll bet I can make just about any major league player look like an all star.
  5. Funny how you always justify the crappy Doug Davis somehow. I don't consider a guy with a 5.14 ERA someone who "usually pitches out of his jams".
  6. Davis got lucky as hell today. He's not going to be able to walk the line of putting 12 runners on in 7 innings too very often before he gets totally hammered in a game like today's. Call him savvy for being able to pitch out of jams, and that's fine, I'd just as soon not see him putting an average of 2 runners per inning on base.
  7. Craig Wilson does it to us again. I guess there IS going to be a sweep in this series after all. Are we playing down to the Pirates level? Or are we just not that good a team that we should look at a team like the Pirates and off-handedly say "oh, we should sweep those guys"?
  8. I agree with Scoop, except for putting Saenz in the rotation. It's been mentioned before, but if teams actually get to scout him before he starts, and he gets around the league once, I really believe he'll get hit pretty hard. He's got good stuff, but he needs more time to develop. And Ginter needs to play everyday. It doesn't matter where. I was worried about his D at 3rd, specifically his arm, but there was a play last night where he dove at the ball, knocked it down, picked it up, stood up and still threw the guy out. I don't think the arm is a worry, or at least as much of a worry as some (myself included!) made it out to be.
  9. Well, I'm sure we're going to hear about how much they battled. You CONTINUALLY get down by 5-6 and more runs, you're going to come up on the short end of the stick, more often than not. Again, I was under the impression that we were so much better than the Pirates that we were supposed to sweep them, or at least win this series?
  10. I agree Batman, I'm not so much agreeing with Schroeder as he is spouting what everyone else already knows. That was just a silly, stupid sequence. I don't like giving away free passes either, but there's a time and place for them, and that was one of them.
  11. Can someone explain to me why they'd throw a belt high fastball to a .350 hitter with the winning run on 3rd, 1st base is open, and Carlos Rivera is on deck? Ok, ok, control issues, but I gotta (gasp!, choke!) agree with Schroeder here. There is NO reason to give in to Wilson in that situation. None at all.
  12. I'm ALL about being patient and taking walks, but it is NICE to see Grieve hacking at a good pitch to hit early in the count and making something happen. Like many others have said, he's ONE guy who might be TOO patient.
  13. I'm starting to think service time be damned, Hendrickson will be looking at a callup really soon. We can't keep having these games where our starters are not getting out of the 4th inning. Our bullpen is going to be gassed by July at this rate.
  14. Capuano can't get healthy soon enough. I simply don't know how this team is around .500 with Kinney and Obie at the back of the rotation. Again, we're battling back 7-5 after being down 6 runs. I don't like a lot of what Yost does decision wise, but that's just me. Like David said a few days ago though, you simply can not question his ability to motivate guys to keep playing.
  15. With 2 outs DHonks, I'm sure no matter what that 2 runs are gonna score, because they're off on contact. Still, the 3rd run is totally inexcusable. WHERE was that throw from Clark supposed to be going? And who was supposed to be catching it?
  16. How UGLY was that? 3 run single, thanks Clark. And here we're complaining about Grieve's defense out there.
  17. RyDogg, I too worry about a letdown in a series like this. The other problem is all of a sudden based on 2 giveaway wins, everyone seems to think the Brewers are quite a bit more talented than the Pirates, Mets, Expos, and Reds. That's just not the case, and games against these teams should NOT be viewed as "automatic" wins by ANY stretch. Our starting pitching is still terrible, our bullpen has about 3.5 guys who are even close to reliable, and well, there you have it. The offense is scoring more than any would have expected, but this team is not THAT talented that we should look at ANY team and say, "well, we're way better than them, so we should sweep this series" (Except maybe the Expos, they're pretty bad!)
  18. This whole discussion is based on the fact that Sheets would WANT to sign for 5 years for 5 mil per. Truth is, I don't think he would, especially if he, as someone said, wins say 17 games with a mid 3 ERA.
  19. Seeings how so many think we should sweep the Pirates, we must have played down to their level tonight. Or it could just be that we aren't that much better than the Pirates, if at all.
  20. I'm not even worried about him not pitching well, it's just that 5 year contracts for PITCHERS is in general, a bad bad idea. I don't care how good the guy is, pitchers get hurt more than position players, and more seriously.
  21. 3 years., fine.....5 years? Wow, that's asking for trouble.
  22. what a comeback. Just got home and tuned in. Unreal On a side note, is anyone else having trouble getting into brewerfan still? I had to reload 4 times before it let me in, and the time stamps are all messed up. Griffey lines out.. GET A RUN!
  23. I understand the reasoning for using Ford when he did, because he wants Viz and Burba for the 7th and 8th. Ford really needs to get his stuff together. Small sample or not, the guy is just pitching terrible. Sorry, but small sample is all you get when you're a reliever and you are struggling. Davis looked like crap tonight. Did not seemed focused. Minimized damage til Ford did him in though.
  24. Terrible. Davis looks completely out of focus tonight.
  25. Lend, I think your entire post was a pretty fair assessment overall, I just think you were a little overly harsh with your original take on Rottino and Trofolz. I won't argue that yesterdays starter was terrible. I watched him warm up in the pen for a bit and he threw 6 straight curveballs above the belt before he actually placed one below the knees. His catcher was kinda gettin' on his case for that. True to form, he hung SEVERAL breaking balls over the course of the first 3-4 innings that were really hammered. He also was throwing a changeup, but the arm motion was pretty easy to read, just from the beer deck. Hey, that's why these guys are in Low A ball, right?
