  1. Patterson in the 7 hole, playing LF, moving Braun to third... I like that thought. It means keeping Cameron in center, but Cameron is worht having for his defense and .800+ OPS.
  2. If both Sabathia and Sheets go, then the rotation needs to be rebuilt. Keeping one of them is crucial if we're to avoid a rebuilding phase. The bullpen needs some work. Riske was disappointing, Gagne a disaster, and it was just not reliable. The next step has to be a new 3B: Either move Braun back, and look for a solid LF, or find a good 3B.
  3. Bigger worries are third base and a leadoff hitter. Maybe it's time to move Braun back to third, and to find a leadoff hitter from the outfield. I'm even willing to dangle Weeks out as trade bait, and plug Escobar in at second.
  4. I'd like to see what the team could do with a healthy Gallardo all year.
  5. I don't hate the decision. Given the injuries to Sheets and Gallardo the last two years, it probably kept the Brewers in two playoff hunts. Suppan's been about what he has been. Teams have been burned worse in the past. That said, do I think the team needs a shake-up? Probably, particularly at third base, the bench (outside Rivera and Kapler) and probably the bullpen (again).
  6. Because he seems to work better with the pitchers, perhaps? I think you have to give Kendall a bit of credit for the relative success Bush, McClung, and Parra had. Parra probably got too tired from pitching so many innings this year. Bush and McClung looked like serviceable end-of-the-rotation pitchers, which the Crew will need if Sheets and Sabathia walk. Kendall's won me over. The problem, to be blunt, was third base being a black hole offensively. Hall, Counsell, and company didn't cut it there and the inconsistency of the big bats. Fielder and Weeks were in a slump for a fair part of this year, and Braun had his struggles, too. Cameron did pretty good when he was on the field, Hart was solid, and JJ put together another good year at short.
  7. At this juncture, I'd say the only real black marks on Melvin are the Doug Davis trade and the Gagne signing. Everything else has been reasonable at the time.
  8. Actually, if LaPorta were still around, my choice would be Braun back to third, Hall to the bench or dealt. I'm amazed nobody is kicking around going back to Braun-Hardy-Weeks from third to second. Amazed? Braun was a butcher at 3B last year, and has no errors this year in LF. Why would anyone want to move him again at this point?Because I'd rather have an awesome-hit, no-field 3B than the Hall/Counsell platoon there... finding a solid corner OF is easier than finding a 3B.
  9. Less of a pipe dream now. Sheets will be a bit cheaper now, I think...
  10. I'd go two years, $25 million, with a mutual option (player: 1 year, $12 million, team: 3 years, $45 million).
  11. Actually, if LaPorta were still around, my choice would be Braun back to third, Hall to the bench or dealt. I'm amazed nobody is kicking around going back to Braun-Hardy-Weeks from third to second.
  12. Face it, this just ain't our year. Part of me can't even think of this as a good shot.
  13. My worry is more for 2009 and beyond. Is better managing talent than Yost available? Replacing Garner with Lopes/Royster did not work out too well.
  14. MLB.com reported it, too. Yost dismissed, Sveum interim manager. Mixed minds on this one. I don't see any available talent out there that rates as an improvement over Yost. I just don't.
  15. At this point it's blow the wild card OR get into the playoffs and be bounced out of the first round. Yost got the team to a solid level, but I don't think he can get the Crew to the next level. The problem is, I do not see a measurably better manager out there for the Brewers.
  16. He's clearly hit the wall. The Brewers need to get someone up.
  17. We'll make the playoffs, and get swept right out.
  18. A Gamel/Rottino platoon comes about from trading Corey Hart and Jeff Suppan to the Blue Jays for Halladay. It's more about protecting Gamel from left-handed pitchers. I don't think Rottino would do badly facing off against mostly left-handed pitchers. The other alternative would be to have Joe Dillon playing full-time at third, and shifting Hall to the OF (unless you think Dillon can be a left fielder).
  19. 2b: Weeks ss: Hardy rf: Braun 1b: Fielder cf: Cameron lf: Gamel/3b: Hall 3b: Hall/lf: Rottino c: Kendall bench: Rivera, Gamel/Rottino, Nelson, Counsell, Dillon, Gwynn rotation: Halladay, Sheets, Gallardo, Parra, Bush bullpen: Torres, Riske, Stetter, Shouse, McClung, Villanueva Brewers acquire Halladay for Hart and Suppan, re-sign Sheets to 5 year, $70 million contract.
  20. Halladay would be worth a trade, I think. If Sabathia goes, Halladay replaces 90% of the production at 75% of the cost. Worth Prince? Maybe not, but perhaps worth Hart and Suppan. Step two, though, has to be keeping Sheets in the fold. The 1-2-3-4 of Sheets-Halladay-Gallaro-Parra would give the Crew a two-year window down the road. Hart could be replaced with Nelson, Gamel, Rottino (if Kendall's catching another 140 games for the Crew, Rottino could take over in right), or Branyan. Halladay leaves after 2010, which gives the Brewers two picks in 2011 - and they can move Fielder to re-stock and rebuild.
  21. I am not sure if that post was suppose to be in blue or not. Winning a game 12-0 turned out to be an ideal situation for taking out Ben earlier than usual.Except three relievers were used. I'd have felt better had they let McClung go for a three-inning save in that sort of situation (assuming Ned still wants to pull Ben after six solid innings).
  22. OK... OK... seeing as the Brewers proceeded to light up two relievers in the 9th for seven runs, while having three relievers throw a total of 39 pitches... Pulling Sheets now looks twice as bad.
  23. Weeks is an upgrade over Durham. Maybe this will quiet the Sheets isn't a big game pitcher for a while. My beef is pulling Sheets when he's got a shutout going.
  24. I have to agree. For the most part, particularly in the OF, the farm system produces decent (at worst) hitters. Pitching has been more problematic. CC and Sheets have to be the first priority in FA, even if it means cutting Cameron and Kendall loose. Rivera's not bad (when he gets a chance to play), and Rottino could also do some catching.
  25. I'll be optimistic: Sheets and Sabathia both re-sign with the Crew - Sheets for 5 years, $65 million, Sabathia for 6 years, $105 million.
