  1. Keep in midn that Nieves has incentive clauses which means each PA costs the Brewers a bit more. Not Kotsay hundreds of thousands more, but still more.
  2. Meh. Paying $10million today in order to have along term deal with a guy in his mid 30s 5 years from now? Its not terrible but the amount of risk taken on is huge for what might be very little savings. The idea that salaries keep going up is how you get Vernon Wells type deals.
  3. Obviously they are going to put Mark Attanasio in LA as a big incentive to get Fielder to sign with the Dodgers in order to get a marquee player in the LA market. Or this isn't the NBA and more likely baseball took over to avoid having the Dodgers go into bankruptcy court where some used car salesman could buy them or something.
  4. Not sure if you saw the broadcast but Brian and Bill mentioned that Kottaras and Wolf tend to hang out together.
  5. Right now he has been DFA'd which is basically an announcement that the Angels are planning to waive him. He can still be traded in the next 10 days. If he isn't traded then he is waived and teams have a shot at claiming him based upon last years record at this point I believe. It goes by worse record in the AL then the NL. If the player makes it through waivers he can be assigned to the minors. If he previously been waived he can claim free agency instead of going to the club's minor league system. The claiming team assumes the contract.
  6. Madsen is the 8th inning guy and Contreas is the closer. And I'd even take Nieves vs a LOOGY that Manuel might have gotten than Almonte vs Madsen.
  7. Why are you leaving in Almonte with such a huge leverage AB against a RHer?
  8. I still think Vegas (read bettors) tend to make teams too big of favorites with certain pitching matchups.
  9. Gordon has also battled injuries. Gordon's biggest crime is not being Tulo, Braun, or Zimmerman.
  10. He's chasing the same number of pitches outside the strike zone, he's just making more contact on the ones he chases and fouls many them off to extend the at bat. Yep. His O-swing is 30.3% vs 31.3% for his career. His O-contact% is 74.5% vs 61.9% for his career. He's swinging less overall because he's swinging less at in the zone pitches.
  11. Because Braun didn't make the last out, McGehee did. So you're replacing an OFer with a career infielder in a DS despite the last out being made by a 3B? And you ask why people wonder?
  12. Wood has had the opportunities though. He has had 494 PAs in the majors and hit .168/.197/.259. Alex Gordon hasn't been a stud but he's been an average player. Gamel in the majors has hit .241/.335/.414, his struggles have been greatly exaggerated. Wood would need to be on the roster and while there is room with right now not sure having him replace Almonte/Nieves does anything.
  13. Ryan Howard showing why Fielder is not the worst defensive 1B in the league
  14. It isn't pitch count that's Wolf's only problem its his command is bad. And its not likely to get better as he tires.
  15. No they don't tell us anything. To take you analogy is like interviewing 30 people giving the same interviews to 4 polling firms and them getting different but similar results because of the filters they use. It doesn't change that the underlying sample tells us nothing. And this isn't just a sample size issue, its a measurement issue. All they tell us is that he's neither been especially great or especially terrible and that doesn't even get into how shifts can muck things up.
  16. Pretty sure Villaneuva can be explained by a BABIP of .000. He'll suddenly "suck" in May.
  17. No it wouldn't. Reyes' defense is a large question since his injury.
  18. I really wonder if teams will start abusing the bereavement list. Not saying Marcum shouldn't be with his father or this isn't a good use of the list, just the reason there are minimums on DLs and option stays is so teams don't play games with starters between starts.
  19. There is no way Betancourt's option is picked up. $4m more to have him play for you? God no.
  20. Keep in mind the idea is that if the player is sore the next day its not a big deal while in the majors it can handcuff you to be short a player.
