  1. A full season isn't that much and Miles only had 408 PAs, about 2/3s a season. Fangraphs basically has everything now.
  2. I understand this to a point. Meaning the Brewers need a starting pitcher, 4 starting pitchers who would have helped the Brewers are signed leaving fewer available. That said its just 4 pitchers, and only really Johnson would the Brewers have had a realistic shot at.
  3. 2007 was the same actually, some systems loved him and some said he was average to below average. I think he certainly is the type of player that shows how far we still need to go in defensive metrics. I'd say the systems are pretty close on the majority of players, Hardy is one of the biggest outliers. UZR actually said hes' gotten slightly worse, but still good. PMR's have him at the same for this year after average last year. RZR is what really changes with him going up and still getting a bunch of OOZ plays.
  4. As a 6th starter/long reliever McClung's fine, but outside of that you're asking for trouble. His bad command means consistently short outings when starting and also for baserunners if placed in high leverage situations leading to bad outcomes.
  5. From fangraphs on latest signing: Dodgers sign Claudio Vargas (1/400k, potential for 1.4 mil in incentives) One could've pegged Vargas as a potential Oriole as well, but alas it wasn't to be. Vargas spent 2008 with the Mets, throwing 37 innings with a 4.51 FIP and lowered strikeout rates. It's worth noting Vargas velocity averaged out about a mile per hour less than 2007 and two below 2005/2006 averages. Historically, Vargas shows slight favoritism to flyballs. CHONE has Vargas equal to Braden Looper and Freddy Garcia amongst others with right around one WAR projected. You have to give Ned Colletti props for the signing, considering the Dodgers are getting him for the minimum, or at worst ~2 million.
  6. Based on what? His inability to throw strikes? McClung can't be counted on for much of anything.
  7. I think its important to note that last year was the first year Hardy looked very good in most metrics. It is also the first year he's been fully healthy in forever. The problem is that even if Escobar is better there's just not much room for Escobar to be significantly better. What I mean is Hardy was at 12.2 runs above average in UZR/150 which is where he falls in most measures. Players top out by around 20.
  8. If the Cubs have this team cohesion then adding Bradley to a team that features Zambrano, Soriano and Ramirez isn't really something to worry about
  9. Eckstein can play short, Miles can't. Eckstein is(well, was) better.
  10. What will almost certainly happen is that a deal will be worked out, Viacom we get more money and TW cable bills will go up to pay for it
  11. Griffey is a 4th OFer at best. His bat is margainal and he can't play defense. He'll likely go to the Marniers if he can't get to a playoff caliber team for a reunion tour.
  12. Who can the Brewers part with? Salome, Brewer, Gillespie, Green if they move Lawrie, Gindl, Nelson, Irribarren
  13. That Greinke is likely available is a big reason he's targeted. He's only under contract for two more seasons and the Royals are unlikely to pay him or be good enough to use him. But for the same reason they aren't taking anyone currently on the Brewers save Gallalrdo or Parra in return and moving either of those isn't a good idea for the Brewers.
  14. Tavares had a BABIP of .298 last year vs his career of .336 so yeah there probably is something that looks off. That said he's TGJ with a better glove at his best.
  15. I think the problem here is that you are 27 and going into malls.
  16. What do people mean by competitive balance? More different teams have won the world series over the past 30 years than have won an NFL title. Is it make the playoffs? Well the easy way to do that is to expand the playoffs so more crappy teams make the playoffs each year like in the NFL. Of course you then start turning the MLB regular season into the NBA regular season where many teams take nights off all the time.
  17. Sure, but the Angels are really looking for a guy to play 1B now and then or even OF while having Vlad DH/1B. One of those three is coming cheap.
  18. Not sure why you think that. Nady is a solid starter but hardly a worldbeater. He's only under contract for one more season and will likely cost $6-8m or so in arbitration so its not like he's super cheap
  19. Yes and it has been happening for the past 25 years.
  20. Yes how dare the Yankees almost spend as much this as last year!
  21. Signing Dunn for first and trading Fielder for pitching would have made the team better. That's my preference. And what pitching are you going to get? Even if the Brewers sign Dunn teams trading for a 1B/DH (Angels) could instead sign Abreu, Burrell, or Giambi. Or take a flyer on getting Johnson cheap.
  22. Pretty much. They have one open spot in the rotation and if they spend $7m on Looper that's it.
  23. Sheets pitched 198 innings lat year. That's a full season by any measure. Gallardo will have a tough time breaking 180. To pretend Sheets missed a huge amount of time is just wrong. He made 31 starts. Meaning he missed what really? 2? 3?
  24. McClung is replacement level, expecting more out of him is asking for trouble. Because he walks so many that even if he makes 30 starts he may only pitch 150 innings. He works much better in relief. Looper over McClung is like a 2 win improvement. Alone it does nothing, add to something else and you move the Brewers in 85 win territory. The problem is that starting pitching, especially this year, is the easiest place for the Brewers to pick up wins and signing Looper cuts that off.
