Boof Bosner and Oliver Perez can be dominating. What sucks is that two starting pitchers decided to come back to earth in two consecutive starts in the same week. You would think Suppan and Capuano could you, know time their meltdowns better.
I'm not sure how you think thats different from most pens. They have two set up guys, a closer and one loogy. Villeneauva gives them more flexibility than most. The problem is you can never trust Spurling to give you a full inning without having to be pulled.
But it does show why there is a housing collapse in this country. I mean housing increased increased in value on average about 1% per year in real terms for decades. But since for a few years you were getting 5-7% real returns, well that must be the new situation and that rate of growth will continue for ever. Similarly, Gwynn won't hit .400 for ever and Gross will hit above .170. Which means that Gwynn is in store for a drop off and Gross for a spike.
Very few hitters can hit balls for any power. Vlad can, but he really is still selective, he just has a bigger zone than most players. Soriano can hit balls for power, but his lack of selectivity kills his OBP.
Batting average is a decent stat when used properly. The problem is that people use it incorrectly (ERA falls into the same category). Batting average is important when deciding who to use as a pinch hitter for example. Using the Brewers bench, with men in scoring position and two outs, neither Counsell nor Graffanino are really decent options because both are low average hitters even though their OBPs are decent. ERA is similar. ERA gives you a very good record of how the games a pitcher pitched went on average. But it isn't very good for projections and doesn't really tell you how the pitcher really pitched in those games.
If you think you can get an 826 OPS CFer for $5 million, you haven't been paying attention to either the market of what Torii Hunter did last year. He's a $12 million player right now, going forward is another issue. And that doesn't mean he has a real role on the Brewers.
At what point does Yost realize he can't have Estrada hit in front of Jenkins? Make the other manager at least have a small fear that you'll bring in Mench to PH against the lefty. You know Yost won't pull Estrada for that.
Greinke's career ERA is 5.05 Dessens is 4.49. Greinke is obviously young enough to be better going forward, but he brings little right now. EDIT: And too late btw. Greinke had a 5.80 ERA in 2005 while Dessens had a huge year in 2002 with a 3.03 ERA and another good year in 2005 with a 3.56 ERA (mostly in relief though)
I'm planning on being in DC likely at some point. Just too up in the air to know right now. A friend out there keep pestering me to come see her. If it ends up being in July I'll let you know.
