  1. I don't think that is true. The distribution of player talent in any sport is something like a bell curve, with the distribution of talent in MLB on the extreme end of one tail. You end up with a kind of pyramid shaped distribution. If what you are suggesting is true, there would be a glut of above average (but not elite) MLB players being consistently underpaid and/or overpaid. That would represent a major market inefficiency that could be exploited by other clubs. The amazing thing about baseball is despite the players being the top of tier of the profession, the top 1/10 of 1 percent, there is still such huge variation in ability.
  2. You are not just trading Gallardo though. You are trading Gallardo and Braun's prime and you aren't getting compensated for Braun's prime. As to ARam and his contract, look at the position FAs this year. Name one who is a better player outside of Hamilton (who has a bevy of his own issues).
  3. If Hart isn't playing RF he should be traded to someone who will play him in RF.
  4. Aoki doesn't have a chance. Lots of writers won't vote for Japanese players for ROY supposedly because of their deep respect for the Japanese leagues.
  5. And its been like 160 PAs. He's a solid starter but people are expecting him to be an MVP candidate now.
  6. Lucroy might use the same model of bat as Mauer but that is as far as it goes. His BABIP this season is .367. So no he isn't a new hitter this year.
  7. And they would be better if he hit lower. By anchor I mean he weighs it down.
  8. Maybe we can trade Gomez to the Reds so he can be an anchor on their offense like Stubbs is. Thanks Dusty!
  9. Two thoughts from this picture: 1) It does seem like he genuinely liked the guys in the Milwaukee clubhouse. He said something when he met with the press to the effect that the guys got along very well even when things weren't going well on the field. 2) Wolf and Kottaras really might be inseparable?! Wolf and Kottaras are good friends. Schroeder has talked about how their families vacation together.
  10. I actually went and looked this up.FA 3B in 2013 David Wright Kevin Youkliss Mark Reynolds Placido Polanco Scott Rolen Ty Wiggington Brandon Inge It is a short list, fwiw. Wright will take huge $$$. Youk is towards the backend of his career, but id take him if the price was right. He'd mash at miller park. Reynolds can hit 40HR's if you don't mind dealing with his 220 strike outs and his 220avg the rest are meh Wiggington can play all infield positions sans SS and has pop. I think he'd come cheap as well. I'd take him. As said Wright has an option that the Mets will pick up. Youkilis really shouldn't play 3B and might be done due to constant injuries. Reynolds is a 3B for fantasy purposes only. And he hasn't really been good since 2009. Wigginston stinks. The position player FA market is Hamilton and a ton of guys who are part time players. Which is why I don't think Ramirez needs to be moved right now. Teams are going to want to upgrade in the offseason, have a ton of money to spend and there isn't anything to spend it on.
  11. There are no 3B to sign in the offseason. The position player FA market is terrible.
  12. Keep in mind half the guys who were supposed to be there to replace guys who fell off weren't there due to injury or other reasons.
  13. Thanks, I managed to forget about that...
  14. He played Kevin Mench over Corey Hart
  15. Isn't the logical destination for Ramirez Pittsburgh?
  16. Pretty sure "players" means Ryan Braun.
  17. I wished we traded Salome and Gamel in 2009 for those guys.
  18. How is that a young core to build around? You have 29 and 30 year olds in the OF, a 30 year old 2B and your top pitcher is a #2 under contract for 3 more years and really shouldn't be extended. I think people don't fully realize that Milwaukee's plan wasn't to supplement Fielder, Braun and Weeks with FAs but instead prospects from a second wave. What happened is that second wave entirely crapped out. I've been meaning to write something on that, but the plan wasn't what happened. For example we had a left handed pitcher with 6 pitches whose FB was easily in the mid 90s. He looked to be a #2 at worse. And he has yet to make an impact even as a bullpen pitcher.
  19. Contend? That team is bad. It would have to seriously play over its head.
  20. The reason you trade Maldanado (if you do) is because someone values him as a starting catcher. Backup catchers are cheap. The $500K savings is more than made up for if Maldanado brings back a starting caliber player.
  21. I think people forget that Narveson is 30. He was a decent #5 starter but his starting days were numbered as it was. If he can back and be a LH relief pitcher in the future that would be a great achievement. There is a very good chance his career is over.
  22. You still have to pay for the replacements, which of course you didn't factor into your rant. Sure the $ wouldn't technically be committed if you non tender existing players, but where do the replacement players come from and how much to do they cost? The original point still stands and that payroll figure is not outrageously overstated. How is not outrageously overstated? They project spending $18M on Gomez, Parra and Low. Those three might come to $7-8M combined.
  23. That "payroll" assumes the Brewers will pay Carlos Gomez $7m next year in their arby calculations. Here is what they assume for each player: Morgan $3.75M--reasonable Loe $5.25M--not happening Veras $5.25M--not happening Gomez $7M--Yeah.... Parra $5.25M---sure.... Kottarras $3.75M--not happening Axford $2.5M--possible Ishikawa $2.5M---not happening Narveson $2.5M--not happening Estrad $2.5M possible but likely on the high side. So that $40M is closer to $20M assuming they even bring back all those players. So can we stop with the $98M committed payroll?
  24. Keep in mind that used to be Neyer's column. You'd think they would have given up commenting by now.
  25. Greinke did not want to sign an extension his first year. So that is why it didn't happen.
