  1. Victorino over Stanton. Hosmer getting to always play. Well Torre doing his part to get Braun back into camp.
  2. SIERA the past three years Greinke 3.67 2.66 3.30 Cain 3.94 3.78 3.62
  3. Players people would never accuse of using steroids experienced huge increases in power in the 1990s, ie Tony Gwynn.
  4. Kids aren't idiots. They don't use PEDs because some pro athlete does. They do it to gain muscle, beef up for football like their coach says to, make weight for wrestling, and in general to win. The fact a guy they root for uses has no part in the equation.
  5. Very few. Very few players in general make a large impact. The expected value of a middle 1st round pick is like 1.0 WAR per year. That is a bench player. Yes the variance is very high, with some going on to be regulars and the vast majority not having any career.
  6. WAR Robin Yount 74.0 Lou Whitaker 74.3 This really shouldn't be a debate, he should be in.
  7. Unless it's just a negotiating strategy, the Cardinals seem like they are really insistent on not bringing Lohse back. It reenforces my belief that not only was he a bit of a fluke the last two years there but that perhaps they know something that other teams do not. I would stay far, far away if I was DM. The Cards were all set to bring him back in a short term deal until Lohse started saying how they ruined his life by offering him arbitration.
  8. There is no proof that Peralta is ready to contribute (no a handful of September starts against expanded rosters and teams playing out the string does not mean he is ready, and he was pretty terrible in 2 of the 5 starts). He is being rushed and really should be in AAA for another half season. But if the other option is Narveson he might be the best option. Which is why the Brewers should have pushed to sign Sanchez instead of giving a huge dividend to ownership.
  9. Really don't understand why Cleveland hasn't signed Lohse. They are making a run at it, they could use some pitching, and the draft pick compensation for them is very small. At this point any team with a protected pick really should be looking at signing Lohse to flip at the deadline.
  10. Peralta could go to AAA and learn some control.
  11. What is he going to sue about? The leak? It doesn't appear that someone directly tied to MLB is the one responsible. ESPN over the story? The story that the failed a drug test is true. Various talking heads? He's a public figure and unless he can show they are knowingly lying about what their saying he has no case and even then its a weak one because public figures have less rights in this area.
  12. He isn't #2 potential. He has pitched 560 innings in the major league at a #4 starter level. He is about to be 28. He has control issues that can be seen throughout his major and minor league career. His fastball sat at below 92 mph last year and has declined every year. That said the Astros need someone to pitch for them and Norris is cheap. So unless they get something worth while no reason to move him this season.
  13. He was (& still is) regarded very highly by MLB talent evaluators, and could have returned a good young pitcher who'd be with the Brewers through at least 2014-'16. Based on what? The Jays were the only team willing to trade a pitcher without getting pitching in return.
  14. The draft pick compensation will be reworked since it isn't making anybody happy. So having a small waiver for this year when it will likely change next winter isn't a big deal.
  15. If Segura has Clayton's career that would be great.
  16. Age 28 Tony Gwynn 1988: .313/.373/.415 Age 38 Tony Gwynn 1998: .321/.364/.511 So did Gwynn do steroids? Or is there really something else going on?
  17. I really doubt that happens. Aoki fits too neatly in what Roenicke wants.
  18. Downward trend? Not sure how you are evaluating pitching but he has more or less been stagnant for 4 years now. Nothing about his past 4 seasons makes me think anything but statistical noise in any single category. He has been one of the steadier pitchers in baseball. His strike out rate is down from 2009. He was hit incredibly hard last year to a tune of a tERA of 4.44 with only a really high strand rate saving his ERA. His fastball velocity dipped 1 mph last year. There are large warning signs.
  19. The only way Seattle doesn't extend Hernandez is because Hernandez wants free agency. As to Gallardo, wait to see if last year was an aberration or the continuation of a downward trend.
  20. Of course that is the case. Before the salary cap there was no real free agency in the NFL.
  21. Agreed, and I'd bet the same will be said if we don't offer Hart a big extension. Yes, now all we have to do is find another Casey McGehee to replace with another Aramis Ramirez and everything will work out.
  22. The Brewers are above average at every position except perhaps shortstop. Expecting that to happen again is foolish. Yes the pitching is questionable, but that is why this was the year the Brewers could have added a solid starter via free agency. Instead ownership decided to wring $20 million out in profits.
  23. The difference between a good backup catcher and an average back up catcher over 50 games is not very big. And back up catchers are cheap. If you get an offer of a potential starting player for Maldonado you jump on it.
  24. 1) I don't get the complaining about this off season. Almost every contract was in line with expectations or below. Those that weren't are overpaying for relievers which always happens. 2) Baseball has a salary cap. The Yankees are dealing with it right now. The fact that it hasn't brought on huge changes might make people rethink the idea of a salary cap solving things. But probably not.
  25. Most think it was a handshake deal when they signed him for only one year.
