  1. I was thinking that it would have been logical to apply to both leagues, but it's possible that logistics could have prevented that.
  2. It looks like a lot of Cubs fans have left the park.
  3. Ray Prim (1945) was the last Cubs pitcher to lead the National League in ERA.
  4. Wily also has a double and has scored a run. And Villar is a double away from a cycle.
  5. By the way, nobody's mentioned this, but the Brewers are playing well and winning.
  6. For whatever reason, I think the Brewers applied for a National League expansion team but not an American League team.
  7. If Stearns didn't like this, it wouldn't be happening. That's what I think. I think it's highly likely that there's collaboration between Counsell and Stearns, as sveumrules suggests. If David wanted something different, he could issue a directive and require Craig to follow it. If we disagree, I think we should be disagreeing with "the regime" rather than just the manager. If there's any good coming from this, Craig is showing an ability to distribute playing time among a lot of guys. That may be handy in the future, especially if the team happens to have several young players with relatively equal ability.
  8. The purported Charles "Peanut" Tillman connection was to Northwestern Mutual. Of course, if that was the main reason for having him throw a first pitch, it could have easily happened when the Brewers were playing any other team. I think it's apparent that a fair number of Brewers fans stay away from Cubs games. During the years that the Cubs were bad, there were still a fair number of Chicago fans in the stands. Yet, attendance was no better than it was for any other game. To me, the ways to have more Brewers fans at Cubs games are to have both teams competing for the division title or to have the Brewers in the race in a year that the Cubs are irrelevant.
  9. No, that was Mark Attanasio. Many of the overpriced signings were Attanasio telling him to do it. Melvin was also forced to keep filling the roster with old players etc. because Attanasio wanted to compete and that was no place for unproven rookies. Also didn't help payroll was maxed out forcing us to go with cheap options that weren't all that great. Doug Melvin threw mud at a wall because Attanasio insisted on trying to compete. I think that's an overly simplistic conspiracy theory that's a bit difficult to substantiate. We do know that Mark is hands-on. But I think a more realistic picture is that the GM gives him the realistic options, and Mark chooses from them. Adding veterans and competing sooner was an option a decade ago. And adding veterans and hanging on was an option a couple of years ago. These weren't the best options, but they were still viable choices. When they stopped being viable choices, Mark endorsed the tear-down and rebuild.

  11. To gain a year of team control is 11 or so days. That would be the case if the player isn't on the 40-man roster. 11 or so days will get him down to 171 days of service for the season, which would tack on an extra year of control. If the player's already on the 40-man roster, he needs to stay in the minors for 20 days. Any less than that and he'll be credited for a full year of Major League service.
  12. I thought that maybe the backup would be further west. I drove back from Madison on a Sunday recently, and there were backups off and on between Johnson Creek and the lakefront. I always leave the freeway before getting anywhere near Miller Park. I feel like I have better control of my trip that way.
  13. I've found that Cubs games aren't much fun. But two and a half hours to drive in from Fort? Wow. I suppose it was the holiday weekend traffic.

  15. The days to start Nieuwenhuis are the days that Braun takes a breather. Kirk, Keon, and Domingo would have made perfect sense yesterday.
  16. You can compare Albert to other designated hitters and also get average… AL DH: .253/.326/.451 Or you can compare him to overall numbers and get average… AL overall: .322/.426/.747 MLB overall: .322/.419/.741 There's nothing wrong with average per se, but it's a problem with Pujols because of his contract.

  18. I'd call Albert's numbers close to average. AL first basemen: 255 /.328/.444 NL first basemen: .261/.344/.460 MLB first basemen: .258/.336/.452
  19. I took a look at the Pittsburgh TV feed of the 3rd inning obstruction call. Joe Block and Bob Walk sided with Counsell. One of the issues they brought up was that obstruction was called well after the fact rather than immediately. They also suggested that the Brewers could have played the game under protest, although Bill Schroeder (for a reason that I don't remember) felt that this wasn't a protest situation. Both broadcasts cited several rules in an attempt to figure out what the umps were thinking.
  20. Today's the 34th anniversary of Lee Tunnell's Major League debut. He beat Fernando Valenzuela in a seven-inning start.
  21. Per Sophia, Yadiel Rivera has been promoted.
