  1. Edgar Martinez should be in Cooperstown, but I wonder if a full-time DH will ever get voted in. To me, this should be the focal point of this year's discussion. With other players, you can compare OPS+ against others who played the same position, then try to factor in for defense. That's not the case at all for Edgar. I've never used Yuku's kudos feature before, but (if I did things right), Principessa21 got one from me. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  2. I've spent some time this week working on a new Windows 7 computer. It's slow. I haven't timed the startup, but it "feels" like it could be as long as a minute and a half. Tack on up to another minute for the WiFi to automatically connect. When I open some items, e.g. control panels, a twirly cursor comes up while I wait... it feels like I'm opening something that's on the Internet. Within applications, however, things seem to run fine. The interface seems to be same old Windows, too. Microsoft has totally buried the ability to set a restore point, for instance. To do that, a Windows 7 newbie would have to: Open Control Panel. Be presented with a "category view" screen with all kinds of text to read--but no list of the actual control panels. Break out of category view to see individual control panels. Notice that text is beside the icons; that tells one to read in columns. Realize that you have to read horizontally, then locate the System control panel. Wait for the twirly cursor, then be presented with a big window with lots of text. Hit "System Protection" in the sidebar. Here you'll find the button to set a restore point. I think at least one more twirly cursor is involved if you decide to create one. Changing the mouse speed is another example. You repeat some of the steps above and get into the mouse panel. The slider to change speed should be on the first pane you're given. It isn't. You have to look for it. I guess what bothers me the most about the Windows interface is all these big windows that look like web pages that are intermingled within whatever task you're trying to accomplish. They take you by surprise because they're not what you expect. It's not that these pages are without worth. But they should be separated into their own interface. Anyway, about five minutes after I installed Safari, Windows popped up a box asking me how I liked it. That was amusing. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif I'm hoping that the computer is at least partly to blame for the sluggishness. But geez, it's brand new; you shouldn't have to worry about your computer being too slow for the operating system. Hopefully, some of you can cheer me up with some more good experiences.
  3. It's going to continue to sound clunky until about "twenty-thirteen" or so. I'm in the "twenty-ten" camp. It saves a syllable.
  4. Google Chrome (for OS X) has convinced me that browser tabs belong at the top of the window. Even though Opera has had its tabs there forever, it had been unable to convince me. Likewise, tabs on top in Firefox suck, too. Chrome does it so much better. On another note, I don't use Windows a whole lot, so it floors me for a minute when I run into web browsers that hide their menu bars. Firefox is next on the list to do that, so I may as well get used to it. I do think it's a reasonable interface move and that I'll adapt.
  5. I'd have to agree that most cameras have plenty of megapixels for fairly large blowups. As was mentioned, if you're going to try to pick out faces and enlarge, you might have a greater need to look at this number. For most of us, that's pretty much a non-factor, though. Look at features: glass vs. plastic lens, the type of battery the camera uses, ease of charging, etc., then go with what fits your style. I wanted one that used AA batteries, for instance; you can buy batteries anywhere in a pinch.
  6. As long as you're behind a router and you run your updates, I am of the opinion that firewall software beyond the built-in Windows firewall is just overkill. I think this is a viable option for one of the computers. The others are too mobile. This computer is connected directly to the gateway. I'd guess there's a firewall in there. Any tips on configuring it? MS Security Essentials actually works pretty decently. Especially on malware. I"ve been considering this. It looks like it's supposed to be easy on resources. Of course, there's no firewall. I use Malwarebytes freeware, and have had zero problems. I've heard very good things about this. Since the freeware version doesn't run in the background, it would seem that this one is good to keep around to supplement one's "main" malware application(s)... just update and scan periodically. We've frequently "debated" the merits of free vs. paid protection. I've been a big proponent of going free, but I'm starting to move in the direction of paying for "under one roof" protection for most people. Putting everything under one roof makes it more likely that one would keep up with any manual tasks that might be required. Anyway, one of these computers is getting Norton Internet Security - Netbook Edition. (The netbook version is good for all types of machines.) It's good for three computers, so another machine in the house will be covered. If we find we don't like Norton, we can go to another suite next year. I'm thinking of Microsoft Security Essentials for the others. That doesn't include a firewall, so that's something I still need to find for one of the machines.
  7. I had three or four inches in my driveway; the guy who removed it said that with all the water, it was the equivalent of 10 inches.
  8. I'm looking for a a free firewall that runs decently on Windows XP without confusing the user. This would be for two older computers and a netbook. These computers have been using Zone Alarm. As that program has grown, it seems to slow things down much more than it did in the past (especially when starting up the computer). Also, for malware, has anyone tried Microsoft Security Essentials? It looks like something that would run happily on these less capable machines.
  9. Merry Christmas... and that... to everyone! http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  10. Using a different search tack, I found where hawing bestowed OWBC's title.
  11. Yep, we had a good time with the December 1, 2007 ice storm... Nope. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif It's Sunday, February 17, 2008. There should be discussion about it in that year's winter weather thread, but danged if I could find it with the board search. It's gotta be there. Anyway, it coincided with hawing bestowing your Weatherman title. I could look that up in our log. She did that at 1:46 PM on Friday, February 15, 2008. I followed up by editing the map into the board skin on Sunday at 7:35 AM. The picture would have been taken just before the skin edit.
  12. These tutorials are a lot better written than what I offered above. Edit the information in your profile Edit the layout of your profile
  13. obsessed, if I remember correctly, the weather map next to your avatar is showing a pretty nasty ice storm from early 2008.
  14. Facebook's new 'privacy settings.' Yeah, that and they mislead you into making your Facebook pages viewable to "everyone." Facebook actually has an "only me" setting, but you have to dig under a "customize" link to find it. This is a pretty major change. I'm surprised that a thread hasn't been started about it.
  15. It's been discovered that when one "disables" certain Yuku profile blocks, the information contained within is still viewable by savvy members unless one first sets the block's permissions to be viewable to "only me." The "official" response from Yuku is, "Disabling a function removes it from view, but it is unrelated to the actual privacy settings of the block." In other words, this falls into the category of "expected behavior." Those who think like me assume that "disable" means "not work at all." Actually, it only removes the information from the profile page. Now that we know what's going on, anyone with concerns should check his/her profile settings. Here's how one "disables" (removes a block from the profile page): Hit the "Edit Block Layout" link at the top of your profile. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a244/casey1992/boardpics/bfnet/editblocklayout.png Move the "active block" you'd like to eliminate to the "inactive blocks" area. This can be accomplished by dragging or by hovering over the block and using the icons that appear on the side. The square icon at the top "disables," i.e. moves the block to the inactive area (without necessarily making the information unavailable to others). http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a244/casey1992/boardpics/bfnet/editblockicons.png Hit the "Done" button at the bottom of the page. Here's how one controls who can view the information within a particular block. Hit the "Edit" link at the top of the block in question, e.g. Friends. Move the Permissions "(who can view)" popup to "Only Me." http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a244/casey1992/boardpics/bfnet/editblockpermissions.png Hit the "Save" button. Here's the rub. If the block you'd like to check is already "disabled," you'll have to "enable" it to get to the privacy settings. Hit the "Edit Block Layout" link at the top of your profile. Move the block you'd like to check from the inactive area to the active area. This can be accomplished by dragging or by hitting the "Enable" button that pops up when hovering over the block. http://i12.photobucket.com/albums/a244/casey1992/boardpics/bfnet/enablefriends.png Hit the "Done" button at the bottom of the page. At that point, you can adjust your privacy settings and if desired, disable the block again. From what I can tell, this issue applies to the Friends and Comments blocks. While other blocks appear to be "safe," I can't tell for sure. Take note that many members here have migrated ezBoard profiles. Those profiles were migrated with the Friends and Comments blocks "disabled" while set to be viewable by everyone. In other words, they can be seen by "hacking" one's way in. Yuku is giving us new profiles sometime in the future; this will cease to be an issue at that point. And no, I'm not going to tell you how to "hack" one's way in. If you figure it out on your own, please don't post instructions. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  16. Did she remember to pick up cheese with it?
  17. My mom always liked earrings. They're simple, they don't take up much space, and having more than one pair isn't an issue. As long as your parents don't already have one, I like the digital frame idea.
  18. Dave Bush was sent down for only a day or two in 2008. Wouldn't that mean that he'd still have an option remaining?
  19. Thanks for the heads up. Hoffman's missing contract numbers would be an error of omission. I don't know what criteria the contract gurus use here before they post numbers (or if there are any criteria at all). But I'd expect Hawkins to be "caught up" soon enough. And now that you've mentioned it, Hoffman will likely be caught up along with him.
  20. Other than not having easily-accessible direct paths to files (e.g., just being able to easily open Then how do you open something? Al, maybe one of the antennas is going out on your router. If you call tech support, the gurus might be able to test for that over the phone.
  21. I think the misspellings of "Counsell" were displaced by misspellings of "DiFelice."
  22. Actually, we should be sending the cheese to Godspeed. We should be sending DatHoser a new wife.
  23. I'd stay at Motel Hell and risk being turned into sausage vs. driving in the mess.
  24. Adam, after taking another look at this, the "day-night" issue has to do with which provider you're using. It appears that you post from school during the day. Your home provider would be on the list of troublemakers. According to Yuku, most of the general access issues have gone away. It was necessary to wait for each problematic provider to flush its DNS. I've never heard an explanation like that before, and I've never seen a "wait for the provider" solution on other sites. Can anyone comment about that? Are we being fed a line of doggie dung?
  25. I'm not sure when this started, but Photobucket now requires that you log in every 90 days or your account will be deactivated. If you post an image and your account deactivates, this image will appear in your messages in lieu of the original: http://i592.photobucket.com/albums/tt2/ebandfb/eBay/accountinactive.jpg Simply logging in will reactivate your account and restore your linked images. After 365 days without logging in, your Photobucket account will be deleted. Within a grace period of this happening, you can restore your account by upgrading to paid Photobucket Pro. Many members have linked a Photobucket account to Yuku to make pictures easier to post. I don't know if accessing Photobucket via Yuku's post editor counts as a login or not.
