  1. The logic was that Yost wanted Shouse to pitch the seventh inning and wanted to avoid having his spot in the order coming up. Hart was the guy who had the last at bat.
  2. That's not an issue. A player can be moved to the 60 day DL retroactively whenever the team sees fit. As a matter of fact, we've seen panic attacks on this board when a player is moved to the 60 day DL when he's supposed to be back in a week or ten days. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif All the 60 day DL does is remove a guy from the 40 man roster. The roster currently stands at 38 players, so there's no reason to use the 60 day DL at all. It should be no problem getting Dillard from Nashville to Washington by game time.
  3. I don't know either. I have no clue what he's talking about. It doesn't seem to fit into this discussion at all.
  4. I think it's perfectly valid to evaluate a manager based on motivational skills, clubhouse atmosphere, team chemistry, etc. Of course, we, as fans, aren't in a good position to do this. Stats become necessary when people say that the manager has single-handedly lost X number of games. That "X" is often exaggerated. Stats help us to be more realistic.
  5. This is getting way off track. There's a vent thread for vents and a designated Yost thread for evaluating Ned's job performance. If someone wants to approach the sweep thing objectively and statistically in a new thread, that's fine. However, I'd very strongly suggest leaving Yost out of it. Discussing him obscures the question of how the Brewers' sweeps record in recent years compares to what should be expected.
  6. This thread seems to have run its course. Recent posts are nowhere near the parameters set in the lead.
  7. This is headed toward turning into a vent thread. As TLB says, we should be looking for a way to compare apples to apples before passing judgment without facts.
  8. One of my friends flew and never left the lower 48. His luggage went to Hong Kong.
  9. Strikeouts don't work well for player evaluation, so they should be shoved aside in that sense. If the manager is looking for a pinch hitter in a situation where a strikeout is going to be more harmful than other kinds of outs, then they should be considered. By the way, I've hidden a couple of messages that contained full lineups. Per Major League Forum rules, please keep full lineup posts in the designated lineup thread.
  10. One might argue that the Brewers could use a better bat on the bench anyway, DH or no DH. They wouldn't necesssarily be calling up a player for only one series. It's still a good point, though, and it certainly could be applicable in a number of cases. Boston is a talented team that happens to be well covered with the Youkilis-Lowell-Ortiz-Casey combination at 3B/1B/DH. While it'd be unreasonable to expect the Brewers to have an extra Youkilis-Lowell-Ortiz guy sitting around, it certainly would have been reasonable to send out the equivalent of a Sean Casey instead of what they did.
  11. Speaking for staff, mods, and long-term members, yes, we do. We become very concerned when it's possible that Brewerfan can be cited as the source of an unfounded rumor. If a thread reaches the point where the unfounded information can cause someone harm, it'll be removed or locked. If a member trolls by intentionally posting false information, he'll be banned immediately. There's a thread like that in WOAH SOLVDD. Sometimes, even discussion of information coming from someone else can cause trouble. Many will remember when a local radio station pinned a trade rumor on us when it actually came from a blog that was linked to within the thread in the Transaction Rumors Forum. That was similar to what Tom posted today. He covered his butt, but that wasn't good enough for some people, and it caused a bunch of fuss. A lame duck manager isn't any good, either. It takes away leverage that he should have with his players. Paying out a year and a half of salary if the manager has to be fired is a small price to pay to help give the guy a fighting chance to succeed.
  12. Brewerfan.net staff members (normally Brian or Jim) have broken several stories that I can think of over the years. There's only one that I remember coming back to slap them in the face. Too bad the thread didn't get stashed in WOAH SOLVVD. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif When this was first posted in Tom's blog this morning, I was fine with it. I felt he made it abundantly clear that there might not be any credibility at all to the post. This certainly wouldn't have been suitable to the article portion of JSOnline, but blogs are a bit different. Now that I've seen the reaction, I wouldn't suggest that Tom go this route again. As it would have been a safer venue, a better decision would have been to post a link to the rumor at SportsBubbler.
  13. Let's try to not turn this into another Yost thread. We have a designated Yost thread for general job evaluation stuff. The other threads regarding Ned should stick to the specific focus defined in the lead post. This thread is more about Melvin and Nashville than anything about Ned's job performance or the condition of the Brewers.
  14. I've never been able to figure out how people in that neck of the woods would say Millah Pahk, then turn right around and say Mark Loretter.
  15. I don't think it's necessarily an odd time to visit. But even though it's likely to be pure coincidence that it coincides with all the Ned talk, it's still interesting to speculate. I don't know how much notice Doug could give a Kremblas or another underling lower on the totem pole, though. If he made it obvious what he was doing, he'd likely be usurping something that ought not be usurped. EDIT: I would think evaluating Kremblas would be part of a typical Nashville visit whether or not Doug was thinking of replacing Yost.
  16. A GM would still want to check on players who aren't potential callups. There's a host of things Doug could be doing down there.
  17. This isn't the first time we've heard about an e-mail like that from Haudricourt. We've seen copy/pastes of e-mails to members posted here that make this one pale in comparison.
  18. shameless repost of item on Tom's blog: I can't find a link to that. Please cite sources when you quote someone.
  19. ...Simmons is the wrong guy to take over. He looks as lost in the dugout as Yost and appears as if he would rather take a nap than watch the game. Ted always looks that way. Back in the '80s, when we knew some Brewers were implicated in the drug scandal but didn't know names, people I talked to were certain that Ted would be one of those guys... simply because of how he looked.
  20. I am surprised Simmons is even willing to take the job. Be careful with the word "is." http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  21. The Cameron sample is tiny. People should be sticking to whatever opinion they had about him before the season started.
  22. That concerns me about Frank, too. I wonder if he does it because he believes it's a great way to score runs or if he's simply doing it to teach it. If the motivation is to teach small-ball to minor leaguers so they can pull it off properly when called upon, then I wouldn't be concerned. If he were going to be using it as a front and center strategy at the Major League level, then I'd have problems.
  23. We have that thread if you'd like to join in over there: Who would you replace Ned with? And I agree... there's no need to use a Yost "replacement" thread as a Yost "bashing" thread. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  24. Exactly. Negativity by itself isn't a problem. It's the post quality frequently accompanies the negativity. DougJones43, you pointed out a perfect example of someone not backing up a point while using condescension in reply #90.
  25. Hits, walks, and being hit by pitches count toward on base percentage. Unlike batting average and slugging percentage, which ignore them, sacrifice flies count against OBP. Sacrifice bunts are still ignored by OBP, though.
