  1. Let's get back to addressing the messages in this thread rather than attacking the messengers.
  2. Some of you must not either understand baseball or just have a burning passion of hatred for Ned, because to pin that loss on him is down right hilarious. I hid the post that said that. It crosses the condescension line, and the member who posted it will be receiving a PM.
  3. Because the "Bullpen Can't Bring it Home" thread was in-game thread material, it has been moved. The posts can be found here.
  4. Hey gang, let's cut back on quoting full posts, and especially let's cut back on the nested quotes. Please see this thread... Quoting messages: please be brief Thanks.
  5. In this case, it had only been four days since the lineup thread had been posted to. Additionally, the new thread almost immediately spilled over into the Fielder and Braun spots--something that, of course, was completely appropriate. It was just a matter of time before it started getting into the rest of the lineup. In contrast, the old designated Yost thread had sat dead for 13 days when a new one was started. And actually, the current designated Yost thread started out with some pretty specific discussion and wasn't actually "designated" until four days later when it was deemed to have virtually become a duplicate. By the way, tags in the Major League forum are currently in pretty good shape and should be useful.

  7. People tend to not pay attention to MBA (membership by approval) instructions. They're asked to compose a membership statement in paragraph form. Instead, stuff like, "Go Brewers," "I want to post here," and "Let me in" is submitted. The second last paragraph of the application instructions asks for a paragraph, and it says, "the content and quality of your message will be our first impression of you." Here's the current content of the MBA instructions:
  8. These are all legitimate concerns. I don't think they've arisen because of a decreased moderator presence. Rather, I think there is a combination of factors involved, the most prevalent being the increased number of posts since the start of the season. Although I agree that condescending posts have increased significantly, this is an issue that's always been a bit tricky. To be fair to members, I think mods like to look for hot-button words or phrases, then advise, warn, or strike based on those. What we seem to be seeing lately is that messages are containing a lot of scolding. While dealing with a message's tone is much more subjective than simply looking for obvious verbiage, I think we're likely going to have to make a foray into addressing this stuff more directly. I think a good example of this is the current designated Yost thread. If you compare it to the previous Yost thread, you see a definite difference in the tone of the discussion. Going along with the increased scolding is the increased venting. Posts can be moved to the vent thread. However, not all mods are totally comfortable using the Yuku toys for pulling that off. Maybe we should simply hide more of the problematic posts. Many people see that as censorship. The other side of the coin is that hiding posts is probably the most expeditious way toward keeping Brewerfan beautiful. As far as back to back posts (and back to back to back posts), I'm in definite agreement that we're seeing way to much of that. As Peavey says, occasional occurrences are OK; sometimes it's really difficult to combine two completely unrelated thoughts into one post. Right now, however, it looks like several people are reading a thread, responding to a post, reading a bit further, responding again, etc. That's lousy netiquette. backupcatchers, my gut says you've used good judgment if you've back to backed. I've seen nothing that you've done that has tripped my trigger. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif As far as deciding whether to add a new reply or whether to edit, I'd consider the significance of the new information along with where it best fits. TheCrew07 brings up an interesting point. While there are occasional exceptions, when one member dominates a thread, there's usually a problem. We've locked threads for exactly that reason. On LambeauLeap, it may be a bit more natural for that to happen, though, given the board's significantly smaller membership. One thing that hasn't been mentioned is that we seem to getting more posts that will quote a previous post, then say something like, "Great post!", "I agree!", etc. Those aren't necessary at all. If a member wishes to add to a previous point, fine. If not, don't post. Mods have been hiding an increasing number of these posts. Going along with this, I've found myself paring back quite a few lengthy quoted passages that simply don't contribute to the message at hand. I'd encourage members to attempt to abide by the guidelines given in the "Quoting messages: please be brief" thread that's still featured in the Major League forum. I do know that one member has expressed to me that he's had trouble editing quotes. In a case like that, mods are glad to pitch in and help. To try to be proactive about preventing potential problems, one thing that's been going on behind the scenes is that a lot more membership applications are being denied. Since April 9, 19 applications have been approved while 18 applications have been denied.
  9. Yeah, cameramen do that. Back when I had C-Band, before an ESPN football game, cameramen were looking for "hot" women and the broadcasters were commenting on them.
  10. I'm fine with the comments of Cedeño and Zambrano. After all, Robin Yount reminded us every year that a team's goal is to win the World Series. I do agree with cubfan1126 that the headline writer might have better served readers by focusing on something else, such as the Cubs winning 7-1 and having a 4-game winning streak. It might have been more appropriate had the article's author placed the game itself higher on the inverted pyramid, too.
  11. 23 "you knows" in the Fielder interview, including the one that actually belonged there.
  12. I stand by the terrible comments. Yeah, they were awful. Sorry, I couldn't resist. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif In all seriousness, though, the three points you used just now (5 organizations in 2 years, etc.) belonged in your first post. Simply saying "he's terrible" and running along does nothing to contribute to conversation.
  13. I wonder if Harvey Kuenn would have held Rollie Fingers out of the game if he had pitched 3 straight games before in a save situation. In 1982, Fingers pitched three days in a row one time. He pitched two days in a row six times. He never pitched four days in a row.
  14. I've moved some of the posts that were more about Nedly's personality than about the lineup to this point in the Yost thread.
  15. naivin, please attempt to address the message rather than attacking the messenger.
  16. On Home Plate yesterday, Kevin Kennedy pointed out that at least in the past, it would be common practice for scouts to tell players to "adjust" their age. As a matter of fact, Kevin used to be in the Dodgers organization and the Dodgers got into trouble at one point for doing just that. It's something to think about before pinning all the blame on Tejada.
  17. Some of you need to eat crow on your big predictions for Gabe Gross. Based on 35 plate appearances?
  18. why am i posting in a completely different year from everyone else? hmmmm... It's a bug that's been going on for a couple of months; Yuku hasn't been able to get to the bottom of it.
  19. I agree that there are better words than mediocre to equate to "average." I looked that word up recently and both definitions were correct. However, the definition synonymous to "lousy" was placed ahead of the definition synonymous to "average."
  20. I think I've gotten lazy and fallen into that trap on message boards. It's a whole lot worse when broadcasters do it, though. That drives me nuts.
  21. It's the storm that dumped the freezing rain on us on February 17, 2008.
  22. naivin, I think what you ought to do is come up with a list of the positives Ned brings to the table.
  23. Tuesdays, when starting a thread, please take a moment to let us know what's behind a link. That'll give members an indication if they want to click through. A thread title calling a player a liar and handing us an URL doesn't cut it.
  24. In a situation like endaround describes in reply #4, a walk would actually have negative offensive value: it sets up a force play at every base when the offensive team only needs one run anyway. IBBing a batter with a runner only on second would be similar, but not as extreme. Of course, a manager still has to factor in who he'd be pitching to instead of the guy he walks.
