  1. Just about every stat is good for trivia purposes. Birthday batting averages come to mind. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif My guess is that ERA is about as "good" as batting average (not awful, but not optimum). How far off is that assumption? Here's what I tend to do when looking at a pitcher: Glance at the ERA to get started. Check out BBs, Ks, and HR. HRs need to be given some 'breathing room' since there's no park adjustment. Hardball Times K/G and BB/G is probably optimum, but K/9 and BB/9 should suffice. I'll also look for a 2:1 K/BB ratio. I may look up FIP to see how it matches up to my assumptions. If I feel conscientious, I may dig out stats that serve a similar purpose. I may decide to look up BABIP and LOB%, but chances are that I'll wait for Russ, Ennder, or Sam to post them. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  2. I'd say that the #1 shameful show I've been watching is Desperate Housewives. I've never watched it religiously, but now that it's usually on twice a week, I see it a lot more. As far as Rachel Ray goes, it drives me nuts when she gets her hands full of flour and oil, then rifles through her utensil drawer. Of course, someone else is doing her cleaning for her. I'll give Rachel credit, though. She ate at Mader's for about eight bucks.
  3. The problem is that ERA can be very breakable, even over the course of a full season. For one pitcher, it may be an accurate representation of his work; for another, it might not be. As an example, here are two very similar seasons with very different ERAs: IP ERA K BB HR Carl Pavano, 2003 201.0 4.30 133 49 19 Carl Pavano, 2004 222.3 3.00 139 49 16
  4. Al, most of the outages are the result of crummy rural electricity. Today's outage was due to a storm and was widespread. The last outage?about two weeks ago?was apparently also widespread, but it was on a nice sunny afternoon. Coincidentally, that was the same day everyone's landlines went out from about 9 AM to 5 PM. Anyway, brownouts and surges are routine. Those go in spurts. I won't have any for several weeks, then for about a week they'll occur several times a day. I guess the electric company can fix this particular issue if I'm willing to invest about $3,000. I'll protect my important stuff with decent surge protectors and live with it.
  5. Would she be happier if you both decided not to keep score?
  6. I hate it when the power goes out. I know it only happens once every few weeks, but I guess the unexpected part bugs me the most. Not being able to flush the toilet is the worst part.
  7. I tend to agree with your points, but I'm sure we'll hear some valid counterpoints. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif What sticks out in my mind was a Yost press conference when he said he could tell Bush was in trouble starting right away with the first batter of the game? even though Dave struck that batter out. As was mentioned in the vent thread, you'd think Ned would have had plenty of bullpen options today, including a starter or two. You're right that this shouldn't need turn into a Yost sucks thread; we have Yost's Last Stand in the designated thread list in the Major League Forum FAQ. There's also a recent Spurling thread if anyone wants to pick apart his skills.
  8. Ennder, how did you go about finding that data? Did you have to have guys in mind to start with or was there some easy internet magic involved?
  9. Isn't that pronunciation going to cause similar straight-face issues, UeckerAddict? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  10. I think he was also Wang Chien-Ming for a while. Wikipedia lists one version of his name as Wáng Jiànmín. If your OS and browser will handle it, I like this version the best: 王建民.
  11. I didn't catch everything, but they were discussing uniform choices on today's TV broadcast. Usually, the starting pitcher picks the jersey. Today, the blue tops are simply too hot to wear.
  12. I bet someone like Sam could dig up grounder, popup, line drive, and fly ball stats on Rickie. If those things haven't changed appreciably, then you certainly have to consider luck. My gut says it's a combination of plate issues and bad luck.
  13. Other threads with this discussion: Hall alternatives (Official: Gwynn is being recalled) General Tony Gwynn debate. Whats is Rickie's problem? Is he hurting or confused? General Rickie Weeks debate
  14. Do you know how many pitches Ben threw?
  15. Note to Brian Anderson: Edgar Hoover wasn't a president. It looks like the Nats have chosen the Mt. Rushmore presidents for their racing mascots.
  16. Do the Nats have mascot costumes for all 42 men who've been US presidents?
  17. The problem is that Racine is part of the Milwaukee television market, so WMLW's rights are protected. The unfortunate solution isn't very good: scream to your cable company.
  18. Three things: 1. When a motorcyclist stops to talk on his cell phone, he shouldn't be doing it in a no-passing zone. 2. I had to return a plastic tumbler a couple days ago because I ruined it trying to get the sticker off. 3. A few days ago, I stopped into a Wausau vet to buy dog food. (This is not my regular vet.) When I was getting the stuff into my car, a couple walked out, and the man was carrying a rather large dog. It took me a minute to realize that the dog was dead. There's got to be something more dignified than carrying the animal out the front door, across the front parking lot, and down the sidewalk to the car.
  19. Don't you mean the 'forcefulness of fuchsia'?
  20. I'm getting the game. The pregame show entry in the program guide must have been a mistake. Now that I think of it, I don't think there are any pregame shows for WMLW games.
  21. Is there a pregame show tonight? I see it in the program guide, but I'm not getting it. As far as Gwynn goes, I'd bat him 10th if I could. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  22. I was going to put a sample of real pink in my previous post. But it looked even worse on the gray background.
  23. We're actually using fuchsia. Reading pink would be impossible.
  24. It's close to 100% likely that Ryan will get super-two money. Remember that super-two directly affects one contract: the contract that's signed for a player's third season. Whether it was the team's intention or not, keeping Ryan in the minors delayed his ability to declare free agency for a year.
  25. I also wonder how the iPhone would cause intrusions that we don't already get with our peon phones. My cells don't interfere with my life. People who contact me know that I generally don't 'do' voice mail unless it's a special situation that warrants it. (If I used the phones for business purposes or it was paid for by the boss, I'd have to think differently.) Trombone, please avoid using AOL-speak ("u" instead of "you") in your posts. Thanks.
