  3. TBS isn't so bad because almost all cable subscribers have it. I don't know where FS1 fits into the scheme of things. TNT and MLB Network are on higher tiers, and that isn't good. I think that one issue that can be addressed immediately is communicating how overlapping games will be handled. This year, that was a mystery until the overlaps actually occurred. To find those games, viewers had to tune into the originally scheduled channel and catch an announcement from the broadcasters. And once you find the game, something's wrong with cutting off coverage and forcing the viewer to change channels again. I'd love to see games made available on the Internet without requiring a cable subscription. As Bombers says, people are cutting the cord. Right now, access to sports is a big reason not to do that. But with channels like HBO now offering stand-alone access, other channels will be following. It'd be nice to see baseball being ahead of the curve.
  4. I never realized that Johnny Cueto required a translator. Even in Spanish, it was pretty clear that he was referring to himself in the third person.

  6. Yeah, that was the second incident. The Encarnacion thing was tied to the Bautista homer. Too much to keep track of.
  7. trwi7 and I just covered the main stuff. The benches cleared twice, although nothing came of it. Once was after José Bautista thoroughly inspected his three run homer before starting to run. The other time, Sam Dyson thought Edwin Encarnacion was trying to incite the crowd when he was really trying to get them to calm down and stop throwing stuff.
  8. Russell Martin threw the ball back to the pitcher, the ball hit Shin-Soo Choo's bat, and the Ranger runner on third scored the lead run. Since Choo wasn't doing anything close to interfering, the run was allowed to count. The rules check was just to double-check to make sure that the umps applied the rule correctly. The play itself was a judgment call and not reviewable. This is really the tip of the iceberg. There was an 18 minute delay for the review and to calm down the fans. Someone on the Blue Jay's bench was ejected, but I don't think we know who that was. The bottom of the seventh has been even stranger, starting with the Blue Jays loading the bases on three Rangers errors.
  9. I think you'll be fine. It seems that radon is the most common issue, and sellers generally are asked to take care of that. A Radon mitigation system costs a little under a thousand dollars. Outside of radon, the buyer may ask you to address little stuff; if you have a realtor, that person will likely have people on hand to make those repairs. The buyers are likely to be just as anxious to close as you are, so I doubt that they'll be unreasonable.

  11. Brewers name Tampa Bay's Matt Arnold as assistant GM (JSOnline)
  12. My question would be what would happen if the Dodgers were eliminated before an Utley suspension. A one or two game postseason suspension is huge, but a one or two game regular season suspension would be nothing. Given that this thing started with two games, I suppose there's nothing that would be in place that would lengthen a suspension if it would occur next year.
  13. Here are a couple of links to go with the post above… Haudricourt tweet: Report: Brewers begin front office changes There's nothing extensive at this point. I'm sure we'll hear more soon.

  15. I'm not particularly interested in seeing any of the NL teams advance, although I'd be fine with any of the AL teams. If I have to pick a NL team, I'd go with the Mets, despite the New York thing. The only way I'd want to see the Cardinals advance is if they can be clubbed by the Royals in the World Series.
  16. Turner Field was value engineered. The result of that approach is that sooner than later, necessary repairs and upgrades become costly enough that it makes sense to explore a new facility. The Bradley Center was built just before the time that extensive fan amenities became a de facto requirement, making it obsolete early on. SkyDome (now the Rogers Centre), which opened in 1989, started the amenity thing, and facilities for all sports soon followed.
  17. FWIW, the Indians are tied to their current lease through 2023, and the Rays are tied through 2027. It appears that the Marlins are tied to Miami for nearly four decades. I think the A's are near the beginning of a 10-year lease, but it can be broken with 2 years notice if the team pays the remaining rent. Additionally, the Indians and Marlins are part owners of their facilities. Of these teams, we've seen Cleveland draw 3 million six times, and we've seen the Marlins draw 3 million once. The A's have drawn 2.9 million once, but if you skip 1994 and 1995 (the strike-shortened years), they've drawn 2 million or more every year since 1988. The Rays have drawn 2 million only once (2.5 million in their inaugural season), and in the 21st century, their highest attendance has been 1.369 million. With the A's, I'd say they have stadium problems rather than attendance problems. Tampa's whole situation sucks, but I don't necessarily blame the fans. Their stadium is lousy, and it's in a remote location in comparison to the bulk of the Tampa Bay population. As it looks to be impossible for the Marlins to go anywhere, I think that Miami's best hope is new ownership that fans can trust. Multiple fire sales that didn't make any baseball sense have turned off fans. It also doesn't help that there's a perception that ownership is turning a substantial profit despite what it claims. I think we have to hope that there's a fan base that'll turn out under decent circumstances. Cleveland's situation totally befuddles me, and googling for information doesn't really shed light. Drastic payroll cuts on the heels of the six 3-million seasons certainly didn't help. And trading players like Sabathia didn't help. But other teams have cut payroll and traded stars and bounced back at the gate. One article speculates that dynamic pricing has turned fans off, but I think it's way down the list… if it's even valid. The stadium is 20 years old, but it's also undergone recent renovations. The most important aspects of stadiums built since Camden Yards — good seating and amenities — are still there, and new stadiums haven't changed considerably in that regard since then. Given that the stadium is recently renovated, it ought to be up to date and a nice place to see a game.

  20. trwi7, I have no clue who'll carry which game in the case of an overlap. TNT maybe? Or maybe MLB Network? The scheduling of the games doesn't bother me, but not knowing where to find them is a pain. From what I can tell, FOX Sports Go programming is free with a corresponding cable subscription. It carries pretty much everything that's on FOX national sports channels, although NFL coverage is restricted to tablet and desktop devices. MLB.TV allows access to all postseason games as long as you pay for a subscription and you can authorize through a TV provider. Right now, it costs $9.99 for a subscription that lasts through spring training.
  21. In one of the piles of articles I read, Joe Maddon said that MLB simply needs to enforce rules that are already in place rather than creating a new one. Torre defended the umps by saying that there was a lot going on on the field, including the safe/out thing. In cases like that, if warranted, enforcement can come a little later in the form of a fine and/or suspension.
