  1. Mexico City would definitely need a ballpark with a retractable roof, partly because of pollution and partly because of daily late afternoon rainfall during the summer months. It's amazing how much the pollution lifts, though, when cars are off the road. You'll see that in the evenings and on Sundays. It'd be interesting to see how construction of a ballpark would pan out. Many building projects take longer than anticipated because work will start and it's found that an archaeological dig has to occur.
  2. The Blue Jays are paid in US dollars, and I think the Canadian teams always have been. The issue is that most of their revenues are generated in Canadian dollars. There's no way around that. MLSE, Blue Jays deal with dollar dive There was a nice article rating expansion possibilities that was written a few months ago; it may have been posted here. Besides population, it considered demographics. I think that Austin was rated as a better choice than San Antonio. I think that better revenue sharing all around would be a good idea. The huge markets already have teams. Most US possibilities are smaller market, and non-US markets have to deal with local currency. 50 more MLB jobs might entice the players to agree to greater revenue sharing.
  3. There have been many reports that Strearns and CC have talked daily since the hiring and that they seem to have a pretty good relationship already. We've gotten that from the horses' mouths, directly from David and Craig. I think that coaching hires are usually a collaborative effort involving both the field manager and GM.
  4. It'd be nice if CC could do this a lot more privately. It would certainly make recovery a whole lot easier. We didn't hear about Paul Molitor's rehab for years.
  5. It might matter that Vancouver is within 3 hours of Seattle. Montreal is 5 hours from Boston and 6 hours from New York, plus there's so much population in that area that existing teams aren't likely to be hurt. I wouldn't be overly concerned about safety in Mexico City other than taking the precautions you'd take in any city. Mexico City Myths Debunked I'd be more concerned about getting a plumber or electrician when you need one.
  6. Well, they didn't get nearly as much for Greinke as they did for this year's vets. Teams weren't all that willing to part with prospects in 2012.
  7. Here are a couple of articles: Brewers fire all coaches except Darnell Coles, Ed Sedar (JSOnline) Brewers let go of 5 coaches, including Narron, Kranitz (mlb.com)
  8. The 1B and 3B coaches have other jobs, so those responsibilities may take priority over which base they coach.
  9. Doug emphasized patience. They need to resist the temptation to trade prospects for veterans, at least to the point where it empties out the pipeline. That might make for a longer retooling, but it's also something that could potentially sustain a longer run. Replenishing the farm when the opportunity arises wouldn't be a bad idea either. There's been precious little of that until recently.
  10. Since this discussion is generating a significant number of responses, I've split it off into its own thread. Mexico City is a great place, and I don't think there'd be any issue generating revenue. But attracting players could be tough. Besides the culture being foreign to so many players, they'd have to take precautions with food and water on a daily basis. And there's also road space rationing (if they're nuts enough to want to drive at all).
  11. It's good you brought up the question and subsequently found the answer. I thought that MLB stopped alternating between leagues more recently than 2005. Teams can't purposely tank. They can trade for the future, but when it comes to lineups and in-game moves, they need to respect the integrity of the pennant race and play more or less normally. Having said that, the Brewers could have started younger infielders rather than Herrera; it's fine to play youngsters when they're about as good as the older guys they're replacing. But it wouldn't have been appropriate to sit Lohse and Garza in favor of youngsters had those two been pitching well. Craig mentioned that he took advantage of a Padres game to put lots of youngsters in the lineup. But that's giving guys an opportunity and giving regulars a day off rather than "trying to lose."
  12. Here's a similar article based on a conversation with Doug Melvin. http://www.jsonline.com/sports/brewers/no-easy-answers-for-what-went-wrong-for-brewers-melvin-says-b99588463z1-330545731.html It seems that Melvin, Attanasio, and Stearns are pretty much on the same page.
  13. I believe I read that a Mexico City team would have an easier travel schedule than the Mariners, who currently have the worst.

  15. I don't know exactly they do this, but according to Brian Anderson, the Brewers do track "high stress" innings and treat them accordingly.
  16. I split this out of the Random News topic because of the number of responses it has generated. The situation is a double-edged sword. It definitely makes sense to emphasize winning the division. But as it's been appropriately pointed out, wildcards can easily be superior teams. It's frequent that the wildcard team has a better record than at least one division winner. This year, we have the extreme where two wildcards are significantly better than two division winners. I don't know what to suggest, though, as just about every option has some kind of flaw. I guess it's a matter of which flaw you'd like to live with. I'd kind of like to see a series where the wildcards play two out of three. But there's an aversion to making the season longer. More significantly, I think there's a concern about giving the non-wildcard teams too many days off.
  17. All of Sunday's games are starting at approximately the same time (2:05 or 2:10 PM Central Time), except for the Cardinals and Braves. They start at 1:00 CT because they're playing a doubleheader.

  21. I was impressed by Peterson's home run to center. Where can we find the distance of the homer?
  22. Here's a nice article about Jorge López's son's struggle with a mysterious autoimmune disorder. He's currently in a hospital in Cincinnati, which offers the best treatment for this sort of thing. The $40,000 that Jorge will make during his short time with the Brewers will go a long way toward supporting the boy and his mother over the course of the winter. Prospect Lopez thankful for shot with Brewers

  24. Everyone, including Logan, thought it was foul except for the first base umpire. Logan had to be told to round the bases.
  25. Jason played 1,022 innings at 3B in 2014, so the Brewers have that information to work with. It wouldn't surprise me if Craig got to see him in person during that time.
