  1. I doubt you will see them go back to two divisions. If that were planned, then why have 3 divisions now, when they could have 2 divisions of 7 in the AL and 8 in the NL? I actually think they will likely just stick with 3 and keep the single wild card format. They will just have 2 divisions of 5 and one of 6 in each league. That is not too bad as it only results in about a 3.3% difference in playoff chances. In the AL, I'm sure everyone would rather be in a division of 6 than a division of 5 that included NY and Boston.
  2. I'd like FSN to dig into the archives and show the play from 1999 that resulted in these paragraphs appearing in the Philadelphia Inquirer on June 30, 1999: Fuming Francona. Francona was unhappy with the official scoring at Three Rivers Stadium on Monday night. Specifically, he felt Doug Glanville should have been given a base hit when he led off the game by stroking a pitch right back at pitcher Kris Benson. The ball hit Benson's foot and was ruled an error by scorer Bob Webb. ``I think it stinks,'' Francona said of the call. ``That's an error when this pig jumps out of my ear. That just isn't fair.'' Francona attempted to speak with Webb but was unsuccessful Not sure if the link will work: http://proquest.umi.com/p...amp;RQT=309&VName=PQD
  3. you can see it here: http://milwaukee.brewers....808313398803&c_id=mil Interesting because it is Pittsburgh announcers and one of them says right away "...really a simple play for Sabathia..."
  4. Right now that last 3 game series against the Cubs doesn't look like it will mean much. But with a few games swing over the next month it could... Sure but would the games that preceed that series be any less meaningful if one of the opponenents were Baltimore, rather than Cincinatti and Pittsburgh? With IL throughout the season you would typically have one IL series per month, I think playing three games against the AL in September should be far less of an issue than having the teams in the AL West having a 50% greater shot at making the post season than the teams in the NL central, not to mention the unequal home-away splits against divisional opponents. The ideal situation to me would be to add two teams and go to 4 divisions (and then go to maybe 18 games against division teams, 8 against the other 12 teams in the league, and 3 against each of 4 teams in one division in the other league). Until something like that happens I'd rather have 5 teams in each division.
  5. Doing the math on IL all season, if there were 15 teams in each league. Since the season is 162 games, you would have to have at about that number of IL games at a minimum. Dividing 162 by 15 teams would mean about 11 IL games per team, which is less than they play now, so it seems it could work.
  6. Amazing, this same scorer apparently thinks banging a ball off the pitcher's shins is an error...or at least he felt that way in 1999. On Tuesday, Glanville reached when his grounder glanced off pitcher Kris Benson's shin. Such plays are usually scored as hits, but Bob Webb called it an error. http://sportsillustrated....news/1999/07/03/ap_notes/
  7. Fine but the official scorer was so certain that he made the call instantaneosly. He should have at least looked at the replays before making this decision. Pirate fans on their mlb message board seem to agree that it should have been an error.
  8. I think moving the Cubs to the AL west makes a lot more sense http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif Seriously though, I don't get why interleague games could not be played throughout the season. Why is this any worse than things like the Brewer's Atlanta, Minnesota, Arizona road trip that was probably a result of this "have to play interleague games only at certain times" policy? Another solution would be 4 divisions of 4 teams in the NL and no wild card. This would leave the AL with the newfangled innovations of the DH and the "wild card".
  9. Meanwhile, as someone else pointed out, LaRussa and the Cardinals seem to have issues with about every team they play...
  10. I bought on craigslist. No fees but not necessarily convenient, though in both cases for me it ended up more convenient than going to the ballpark to buy tickets. I tried to check the brewers fees, I got a $4 per ticket fee for highest priced and $2 for lowest. Then it was an addition $2 to print or $3 for mail/will call...these fees only showed up after an additional step beyond the point where convenience fees were revealed.
  11. I watch almost all games but do not attend often. I've always bought tickets at the ball park, but was converted to buying from season ticket holders this year. Got better seats at lower prices due to the discounts. I got front row club level and front row field level for less than face value and then re-sold the metavate passes for $5 each on top of that. The thing that annoys me about the fees is that it has to cost the team more to staff the ticket windows, where there are no fees, than it does for me to buy on line and print my own tickets or even if they mail the tickets.
  12. It would be interesting to see what they do if the Brewers have the wild card locked up but are 1 or 2 games behind the Cubs going into the final 2 games.
  13. Not to mention that taking a baseball teams reported income/loss at face value is probably questionable. In addition, the income statement says nothing about the value of the franchise, which has increased greatly since being purchased by Mark A. It is sorta, but not really, like the owner of rental property that reports losses every year but makes it all back upon sale (well, it used to work that way maybe not so much with falling real estate prices lately). That said 3 million attendance would still only mean under $100 million, even if each fan is worth $33 in revenue. Of course there are other sources of revenue, but there are also expenses besides player salaries.
  14. I like that idea. It would then move CC to down to pitch against NYM on 9/1. They'd just have to skip somebody once to line CC and Sheets up to pitch in both Cubs series. That sounds like a fantabulous plan, given that I have front row field level seats for 9/1 http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif.
  15. Prince also far too often goes for a tag play when he should just turn around and toss the ball to first. He has even done it a couple times where from the spot he fielded the ball he could easily just stepped on the base himself and he instead went for a tag.
  16. The decision had already been made that he was getting the extra day and Yost was not going to skip anyone. You may disagree with that decision, but he was not going to pitch Saturday, whether he threw 130 pitches or 80 yesterday.
  17. Yeah, Sheets would be more valuable to an AL team and CC to NL. I really hope CC does not land in the Central. I think the reality is poor hitting will not hurt Sheets chances of getting signed by an NL team, but good hitting will increase CC's chances of doing so.
  18. Yes, the reaction: "OMG, CC threw 130 pitches instead of 115" really seems kind of silly. But, there could be some good on the psychological side. I assume it was CC's call and he wanted to try to finish the game, if so, then I would agree with Yost on letting him go for it. Considering what he has given this team in his short stint here, he deserves every opportunity to complete games, if that is something he wants to do. If doing so means a lot to him, I could see it potentially having a negative impact on his performance for the last month, to not let him try (within reason). Of course, I did get a little worried that he went to far with him when Berkman was coming up with the bases loaded and Mota was the only one warmed up http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/frown.gif. By that point, though, I certainly agreed with letting CC try to get Berkman rather than going to Mota. Perhaps he should have been told you can start the ninth, but as soon as there is one baserunner you are out of there, even if the baserunner is caused by poor defense. I am just not convinced that pitchers are as fragile as some (based on the over reaction to this and the constant worring about Parra's innings) seem to believe.
  19. In other words..."he just has more pop" http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  20. He has to bat 3rd, because he is in left field. I guess Yost could put Nix in center, Hart in left and Cameron in right to improve the batting order a bit. Unfortunately, there is simply no other way to put these guys in a different batting order.
  21. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/ohwell.gif Do you mean he would not be out if...? I assume the point was that he would be playing if it were the playoffs.
  22. BTW, what sports besdes football keep going regardless of weather, anyway? I mean, I know hockey and basketball do, but then so does baseball when there is a roof http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif.
  23. It's just another instance of me showing my age... Well, I'm right there with you crazy old man http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif...doing the female thing for sports events seems like a recent development to me also, has it really been 10-15 years. Reminds me of a recent realization I had regarding my kids and other young people...anyone under 20 has only ever lived with the President being named Clinton or Bush (that just seems weird, no political point intended).
  24. Now that you mentioned it, I do seem to recall hearing about some change to that rule. But, 4.10(e) still says: If a game is called before it has become a regulation game, the umpire shall declare it "No Game." http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/official_info/official_rules/start_end_4.jsp Aha, I found the answer, apparently it used to be a tie game was just wiped out no matter how many innings...now if they have gone at least 5 it is a suspended game. So it appears that less than 5 is still not a game if it rains. http://chicago.whitesox.mlb.com/content/printer_friendly/fla/y2007/m04/d10/c1890813.jsp
