  1. Yes, it is entirely Prince'c choice to take the risk of passing on a guarantee of $60 million. Like most athletes, IMO, he is foolish about money and risk. Most athletes believe nothing bad can ever happen to end their career. Injuries and even death can happen, but perhaps there is some sort of insurance that Prince has to protect against these risks??? (obviously he could have life insurance to protect his family, but what about injury...for example, what if he has a Koskiesque experience?) Many athletes, when they do get money throw a lot of it away on bad investments, high living, gambling, etc...ala Cecil Fielder, who apparently has very little despite having made $50 million in his career. Another risk for Prince is...what if last season turns out to be his best ever and his performance is never again good enough to get any more than $60 million over the time period for which the Brewers offered it (sort of like Bill Hall's career might turn out, but with bigger numbers).
  2. I guess Fielder figures there are a lot of things he still can not buy, even with $60 million. They should plan on trading him when they get a good offer and a suitable replacement is ready. There are a lot of players I'd prefer to see this $60 million used for rather than Fielder...for example: Sheets, Parra, Gallardo, Hart.
  3. The reason why I said what I did was because I talked to many, many people after the game (Twins and Brewer fans alike), and the consensus was the same with every one... Tavarez should not have pitched in the 12th. Only here did I find people with the opinion that Tavarez was a fine choice to pitch that inning. I think it's more that some here would say there were no better choices available. I did not want to see Tavarez back out there (enven though I watched the game on TV http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif), but in retrospect, I don't know that the other options were any better. Clearly DeFelice did not do well when he did come in.
  4. Don't do it, you'll end up arguing with yourself...
  5. Apparently only to those who are also at the game, those who watch on TV will have different opinions that will make sense to them. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/ohwell.gif
  6. There is no reason for pitchers not to bat.
  7. I understand that, I guess my point is some are letting the perfect be the enemy of the good here. Even if you think he is not one of the top 3 Ofers, if it would be better/fairer for Braun to make the starting all-star team than anyone else who has a realistic chance of making it and you are a Brewer fan why not vote for the guy?
  8. Now 7th and only .032 away from the #3 outfielder in that stat. If few guys make an out in their next AB, while Braun hits another HR, he is probably about tied for #3.
  9. If you are just looking at stats for the season to date, isn't the sample size too small to be meaningful? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/laugh.gif The current reality is that, based on the stats you present in your tables, at least 2 of the top three vote getters for OF are currently less deserving than Braun. How deserving are Griffey and Soriano, if we are basing things on this season? Do any of those who rank above Braun in your tables have a realistic hope of catching Griffey?
  10. I was wondering if that might be the reason for not having acknowlegement...that it may be too easy for the other team to "steal" the sign.
  11. He should tell all his pitchers to intentionally swing and miss three times, so they can avoid the incredible hazard of running the bases. While he is at it he should also ban salad tongs, another known hazard to pitchers.
  12. I don't mind fans getting to vote, what I don't like is the structure of the fan voting. What I would like to see is the fans of each team get to elect one player to the all-star team and my version of fan voting would allow fans to select a pitcher if they choose to. Were this the system, clearly Sheets would be the Brewer fan selection. This would be a better way to meet the mandate of at least one player from each team and would avoid the game becoming the Yankee-Sox vs. the NL.
  13. Are you sure? I've heard a lot about fans weighing each component stat in terms of how well they contribute to "runs scored" on a team level and then basing their votes on that. I voted for Braun because he is one of the few Brewers that is having a good year and also has a chance at getting enough votes to be a starter.
  14. Or the manager did it because he felt it was the right thing to do.
  15. It's like sticking with a job that you don't like because it pays the bills, and you're afraid that if you quit you'll find another job that's even worse. And what's wrong with that? That has been me for about the last 20 years.
  16. Specifically not on the 1982, World Series losing, team.
  17. I don't know that there are many other calls where replay can pretty much always give you a definitive answer...and probably quickly, in most cases. On a close safe/out call it is often hard to tell. On a force out, you can not really determine exactly when the ball makes contact with the glove and on a tag play, it is often hard to tell if/when the glove actually makes contact with the runner.
  18. Huh? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/ohwell.gif
  19. Not a fan of a lot bunting, I'd pretty much only ever want the pitchers to bunt, so I would give Yost credit for not bunting too, too often. Bunting to bring up the pitcher would be a very foolish strategy. I probably would not even have asked McClung to bunt today, considering that the guy following him has, so far, shown little ability to hit in the major leagues...unless the intention was to pinch hit, were the bunt successful. In each case CC could have got him to second...sure a successful bunt could have, no guarantee though, and a hit could have gotten the runner to second or beyond with one less out.
  20. Automated umpires may be ok at some point, but not for at least 10-20 years. For calling balls and strikes, maybe that will be the role of some future version of QuesTec.
  21. Congratulations on demolishing that straw man. Of course, the point actually being made was not with regard to "natural" in the sense of "organic" or not manufactured, rather it is that since man evolved eating meat, perhaps our bodies are designed to function best with some meat and eating meat is as normal or "natural" for us as it is for a lion, tiger, or bear...oh my. That is not to say that with careful dietary planning this can not be gotten around. The thing about Prince is his concern is reportedly the treatment of the animals, not specifically the concept of killing them to eat them. As someone else pointed out, he did not need to give up meat to avoid eating "mistreated" aninmals. In addition, the apparent fact that he still eats cheese would seem to indicate that he's okay with "abusing" baby bovines.
  22. Isn't this decision up to the player? If Prince Fielder wanted to do what Braun did, all he's got to do is tell his agent. If it is truly a case where the agent says "no, I won't do that", he can fire him and hire Braun's agent.
  23. Nonetheless, I'm not trying to claim that going veggie magically makes one healthy. If you're living off of doritos, mountain dew, marshmallow peeps, and hot dogs, dumping the hot dogs isn't going to fix much. Prince is a heavy set dude with some big-boned genes running the show. Whether he's taking care of that body or not, I don't really know. When he comes up to bat, I think we all have to admit that he doesn't look too fit. He looks like someone that... well... lives off of doritos, mountain dew, and marshmallow peeps. Yeah, that was kinda my point about the reports on Prince's diet. I guess I forgot what it's like to live in the Midwest. This sort of close-minded attitude... Ah yes, demonstrating your coastal "open-mindedness" by putting down an entire region. Not sure what is closed minded about finding that one does not like lentils, beans, humus and other typical fashionable healthy vegetarian fare. But I understand, I'd probably also be a bit testy if I had to eat that stuff instead of tasty dead animals http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/tongue.gif.
  24. So naturally, you feel compelled to click on it and post your feelings http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/eyes.gif
  25. and it ends with this: in a nation where more people are shaped like ovals and where cheese is stuffed into every imaginable nook and cranny, Americans need dietary inspiration. Why shouldn't a 270-lb baseball-playing vegetarian lead them? As if emulating Prince Fielder's body is the way to improve one's health and as if there are not plenty of oval shaped, peanut butter and fried chip eating vegetarians. Even funnier is, if posts on here are to be believed, Prince is a big cheese eater. Prince is apparently eating Dorito and cheese topped salads not tempeh (whatever that is...probably something gross), seitan (ditto), black beans (mealy and gross), and lentils (ditto) and who can blame him?
