  1. Post DL stint Garza now has a 3.28 ERA with a HR rate more in-line with career norms.
  2. I have no problem as previously stated trading Davis, but it absolutely is worth considering recognizing that one does not dump players after a couple of hundred mediocre ABs. Between a high BABIP and the possibility that with experience he refines his game a bit even in today's environment he could threaten a .900 OPS in a good year, at which point he becomes extremely valuable because he has done enough before in the majors and the minors to support it being development and not just a fluke.
  3. Roache's .855 OPS would rank 6th among league qualifiers in the Southern League. Only 9 players total have an OPS over .800. Obviously the qualifier part limits the numbers somewhat, but I do think it helps put his breakout into some useful context.
  4. He hits for too high of an average for a 3TO guy his average this year is .466 I'll grant, but Roache seems like a better fits with a .456 3TO this year. I see more 3TO upside for Roache as his walks go up with his better performance along with more HRs as he gets better identifying and waiting for his pitch.
  5. I definitely think you are much more likely to get the best value for Lucroy in the winter compared to any deadline. It's one thing to acquire a back-up catcher midseason, but given how closely they work with the pitchers a lot of teams are going to be a little less hesitant to rock the boat mid-year.
  6. There is plenty of supposition that Mark just picks up the phone and tells Melvin what to do at random, but all of the public statements are equally consistent with an owner who set a desired direction (competitiveness each year) of the franchise (just like every owner) and like's to be in the loop on big transactions. Of course it is hard to battle the desire of people to have a narrative to throw around, and to generations raised on Scooby-Doo blaming our lack of rebuild and/or playoffs on 'that meddling owner' is irresistible.
  7. In complete agreement as long as expendable means trade for good value, not just dump.
  8. Certainly a very nice start for Houser on the BB/K side wonder if he is excited to be out of hitter's leagues?
  9. It's also worth recognizing that while Garza has not been good he hasn't been a disaster like Lohse. He's been better since coming off the DL and a strong finish could easily make the first half look like an aberration.
  10. Reed and Santana are not guys you get cute with on service time. Santana because he's done all he can at AAA and with his profile you might very well want to give him 2 full years to acclimate to the big leagues or risk getting Nelson Cruzed again. Reed is a guy I like a lot, but is not someone likely to be so amazing that I have to keep him. That said he still probably starts the year in AAA, until he has done enough to show he is ready for the last step. That said I'm not sure at the moment how Santana gets into the opening day line-up as a starter but he should. Phillips and Arcia potentially get the whole year in AAA, but it kind of depends we have a lot of young starters if they really step it up?
  11. The depth seems even greater because our pitchers have been unusually healthy so far this year. Sorting out is definitely a good problem to have. Sure beats open day starter Rafeal Roque.
  12. And Valencia could fill in generate some production and get turned into a real prospect. Age is largely irrelevant in judging which of a wide variety of cast off options could be useful to the future. Certainly wave thinking, while great in physics and chemistry is too cute by half in baseball given that the Astros, Cubs, and Twins all got into contention a year earlier then projected. As a guy with some experience already and positional flexibility it sure looks like we could get him lots of ABs within the next year without hurting anyone else's playing time who has earned it (again Dominguez is fine as a project, but he hasn't done anything in AAA to warrant moving up). If a better option becomes available by all means grab, but once a guy gets past prospect age (lets call it 25) there is no inherent preference for a rebuilding team to giving a retread a shot vs. looking at a AAAA guy. Its all about scouting and coaching who do you think has the best chance to do something they haven't done before?
  13. Wang with a great turn around this year. Just adding to the depth.
  14. I could see hoping for Lohse to string together a couple of starts as not being completely ridiculous, but on balance playing time for Thornburg is more likely to produce value in the future, so I'd go that direction. I wouldn't be completely shocked if they left him in the pen and gave Cravy an extended look either.
  15. And if Valencia puts up a season like Lind? Just because the major league team is currently living Logan's Run doesn't mean it is silly to play anyone over 30. Dominguez for example needs to show he can hit AAA first. Perez could potential still find very regular ABs with Valencia around. Rogers would be less certain perhaps, but he's only a little younger then Valencia and I could certainly see Valencia as having a slightly higher ceiling.
  16. It's entirely possible that after the Gomez fiasco the Mets felt painted into more of a corner on trying to get a deal done. It's also entirely possible in their bizzaro world that Cespedes not being on the books next year made him worth more (which is kind of silly given that I'm sure even this year's non-MVP version of Gomez is worth at least 15 million a year)
  17. Before we go to far down the rabbit hole let's address the central point that Lucroy should have been dealt. How many other teams have ever pulled off more than 4 trades pre-deadline? After we know that rather small number then we can examine how many did so while getting reasonable value.
  18. 30 year olds who aren't blocking anyone definitely are part of rebuilding teams, you have playing to treat as an asset to try and let guys build value for other teams. That said I'd want to be careful and think through the implications because we are trying to see if Domingues and Perez can develop as well.
  19. DeRosa on MLB network sure had some moments this afternoon where I thought he was on the Brewer.net payroll I think he mentioned Braun, Lucroy, Krod, and Lind wondering why other teams weren't tripping over themselves to add these guys. It was kind of surreal and worth my cable bill for the month.
  20. Pretty excited about that promotion. He is the kind of player I'm inclined to promote at a steady rate and let him settle into a big league role ahead of any kind of wave, maybe he is good enough to fend off other behind him, and maybe you move on.
  21. Counting the offseason I don't see us being done by a long shot. Between the last 2 drafts and this deadline we are operating in a very different frame of mind then the last half dozen years or so. That said I think it is still very fluid in terms of what kinds of things are coming down the pipeline. I want to see how these younger guys play for a couple of months, and look for opportunities from there.
  22. I appreciate the need for high upside pitching, but way too many of those guys seem to struggle with control and I like a mix of some exciting lottery tickets to go along with better bets who could still be mid rotation guys. That's very valuable depth.
  23. Nothing impressive at the moment, but clearing the way to bring up some more of the relief prospects from AAA and see how those guys do has some value. Color me impressed overall at the volume of deals Melvin has done while still getting fair returns. Cotts is the only guy who might still have some value that can't be dealt in the offseason.
  24. If Davis could finish on the strong side I could see dealing him in the offseason while he still has that young and cheap shine to him. I could certainly see him having a couple of really strong years, but he's also the kind of player that scares me when he does that, because it seems to easy to get attracted to that short peak and end up over paying for a solid, but unspectacular guy.
  25. It's worth noting that Sickely had Hader in his top 75. Here's to a strong organizational finish and see how many guys we can pack in that top 100.
