  1. I feel like the biggest limitation at this time to having a winning record is not getting the luck needed for that to happen, it's that if we get that close its because Braun and Lucroy are having excellent seasons in which case they seem like likely trade fodder and their production would be difficult to replace in the short term.
  2. Except that without the minor leaguers who never make it you wouldn't even have an environment to let the really good prospects practice and develop, so they are worth quite a bit. It is no significant loss of revenue at this point for the teams to pay these guys at least a comparable wage to what they could make elsewhere starting out in their early 20's. The AAA guys if they are vets are usually doing OK already, so you are talking round about 100-120 players total. 3-4 million total per team extra in expense would give them a reasonable salary (25-30,000 a year).
  3. Watching the game just reminded me of Michigan State-Badger games, except Iowa came out working so hard from the get go that they flamed out, and Gard just kept subbing guys in.
  4. There are a variety of situations that happen in most seasons where you might very well want to have a veteran or two around to prevent harm to the development of a young player. The most common is the short 2-3 week DL stint for a back-up player. Sitting around with no regular playing time is not usually very good for most young guys.
  5. Not an amazing deal, but a very good one kind of regardless of how one believes it best to run a franchise. In the most optimistic of scenarios Davis would have truly broken out this year getting the walk rate up closer to his minor league days and clearing 30 HRs. Which probably makes him the offensive MVP of the team. The problem from a trade value perspective is that he is taking that into arbitration and the bonus value he gets from cost control is going way down. So he potentially could still have netted more trade value, but you are wagering that against the sure loss in value that comes from getting older and less cost controlled and the chance of a catastrophic loss in value. You also open up the chance for a player who has done less at the big league level, but has also done enough to warrant a look in part because he has a higher ceiling with the better athleticism. The prospect were pretty good for a player whose value has seemingly always been held lower by the baseball world at large, with a boost in value for the centerpiece prospect being at a position of need and one in short supply across MLB. It is hard to say with any confidence, but the timing and prospects coming back overall in the last few months leave open the possibility that this rebuilding project is not doomed to multiple years of awfulness before the team is solid again.
  6. Glad Piazza got in despite what one might infer from my earlier comment. I have no problem with voters deciding to keep people out based on known PED use, but I do have a problem with the slander campaigns that were passed off as evidence of his guilt. I also do not take it as a sign of inconsistency that others maybe in the HOF even though they cheated in some fashion. Some types of cheating are worse then others for a variety of reasons. For example one can't really complain about the athlete-hero myth, its a 2000+ year old feature of western civilization (and probably others for that matter). Even if one puts that aside, they are still public figures which means their actions will influence others in ways that normal private citizens won't. And ultimately not being enshrined is purely a symbolic gesture. It obviously carries some meaning, but pales in comparison to real injustices like Lise Meitner not getting a Nobel Prize for discovering fission, which far less ink is spent discussing in public.
  7. Or a yearly reminder that an ugly side effect of sabermetric group think has been to ignore the nasty repercussions for people by focusing only on outcomes. It's not like the writers made up the idea of incorporating character and sportsmanship, its been there since the beginning.
  8. I don't think John Jaha is up to much these days.
  9. How about we make him pitch too and just pronounce is 'Keyshnek'
  10. My biggest concern with the trade is that it doesn't seem to acknowledge that playing is something of a limiting quality in the organization. I'm all for adding prospects in the lower minors, but given our larger depth compared to prior years you start to run into problems trying to develop these lesser prospects since there are only so many innings to go around. At the AAA by contrast we've seen our new GM ditch Doug's potential nuggets and bench players in favor of bringing in his own guys. These guys are all freely available talent, so it's not a big deal. This however is taking a major league asset (his precise value may be up for debate but is irrelevant to my point) and seemingly converting it pitchers that were not significantly better prospects then the best 7 or so we already had at those levels. So there is a real opportunity cost there that needs to be considered.
  11. The minor league and major league data certainly suggest 30+ HR power is legitimate. The profile of his tools also indicates he will probably have a fairly short peak. In looking at the month by month data, his BB rate was much higher in the early going. I think he was too passive in the early going, lost playing time and all of the struggles that go along with that, then he found a better balance (his walk rate was still higher in the second half then prior MLB seasons, but lower than the first few months). Given that and the fact he has shown he can be more patient, I'm somewhat optimistic that teams will pitch him more carefully next year and his BA will rise along with his walks. His second half pace would have netted him over 40HRs in a full season.
  12. I agree for this one with it's best just to pick a cut off and stick to it.
  13. I would second that Murphy would make sense on a Lind type of deal maybe even 3 years given that we don't have anyone else on the cusp anytime soon.
  14. Or perhaps in this case the market is telling us that a healthy fraction of what we interpret as GM competence can be attributed to luck?
  15. Hard to disagree with being careful.
  16. I suspect that Davis will have one or two fantastic offensive years when his strike zone control gets really dialed in while the bat speed and strength is still at the top, and he gets lucky on some base hits. I've rooted for him for a long time, but his time on the team is probably limited in one fashion or another I'd just as soon see him dealt for good value this offseason, though as many others have stated it is not a need to deal him (part of what hopefully increases his value).
  17. I'm sure if you want to move back and get a teaching job in WI now DHonks you could. The state is starting to face substantial shortages because it is not as remotely as desirable as it was even a few years ago.
  18. Smearing Piazza/Bagwell isn't hypocrisy it's just plain vile. As in at least have something that looks like real evidence before you accuse people of a crime.
  19. I'm inclined to agree that Arcia's debut will be big, and if we had a 3rd base prospect in AA or AAA to be excited about, I might even imagine that loading the majors with those young guys and having a chance they might all go Astros 2015.
  20. Would they be able to use that injury rule to make him playoff eligible?
  21. I'd lean toward promoting Kodi partly based on the idea that higher level hitters are more likely to force him to improve his control.
  22. Given his strike zone control I have a hard time making an argument for putting Demi in the same boat as Harrison and Gatewood. He'd almost certainly be overmatched. When we had nothing it made some sense to see if those guys might pull off something spectacular, but with so many options Helena is a lot more sensible way to develop him. In a somewhat different vein, I imagine that Clark can handle Wisconsin next year but 40 ABs of just over an .800 OPS is not a level of jaw dropping dominance that demands immediate promotion, especially if that might damage other players development. There have been plenty of draftees who have hit better for more ABs that took it on the chin at Low A. Blake Allemand for example. And yes Clark is a great talent and ultimately other guys get moved around to account for that, but potentially spending half the year in Rookie ball and finishing strong at Low A is still very rapid progress for next year. It's interesting and close enough to consider challenging him, but not a slam dunk by any means.
  23. I think that between his age and performance that Roache has done enough for a promotion to AAA to start. There are a number of different ways his career could play out, but his best chance to play in Milwaukee comes by showing he can hit sooner rather than later.
  24. The short version for the OF is that if you are not excelling right now you are probably going to get a suboptimal placement. On performance Clark put together a very strong case for starting in Low A, but I have to think given the difficulty they might hold him back a tad to give other guys a chance to see if they can show enough in Low A for a midseason jump. Players like Rubio who did some good things, but as it stands right now I'd have serious concerns that going to high A might wreck any chance he has of tapping that potential. Spring training suddenly looks pretty important for some of these guys.
  25. The sum total of all these late season promotions is leaving me pretty excited for next year. It seems like a lot of guys having a fair amount of success in that initial exposure. I'm not entirely sure if that will translate into a bunch of complete teams that will post wins next year, but seemingly at least half a dozen guys who are pretty interesting across the board.
