  1. I slightly share TheCrew's disappointment that Gatewood is stringing some decent hitting together right before Helena opens, but if all that means is that he has learned somethings through the struggles and he is going to go down to Helena and have a good season that is not a bad outcome for a high risk teenage prospect. I wonder if Scooter is doing enough to be close to coming back up? Also I wonder if Ratterree might be that missing offensive piece that can help Brevard get over the hump in the second half?
  2. I don't think we should undersell Segura's worth he still has multiple young cost controlled years left, and he is back to hitting well for a SS this year I counted him in the top 10 for SS OPS (I included a few guys who had significant ABs, but missed the cutoff for qualifying). That's a very valuable property in an offense starved league. Amazingly enough Aramis would be something of an upgrade at 3rd for them right now, so I could see him being thrown-in either basically as salary relief for us or maybe a low A flyer type if we kick in some money. Which brings up a good reason for waiting to deal until after the draft, not only does it open up last year's draftees more clearly to be dealt you also have a better idea at the lower levels where you have real prospects vs. filler which is important if you want to be strategic in acquiring flyer prospect types. If they never play they won't develop.
  3. I haven't lived in Madison for quite some time, but until they got the cheap college kids the teams kept folding, so I have a hard time seeing how they could really scale up to a full AAA team, particularly without pulling people out of seats at Miller Park since it is only an hour away. Appleton probably makes a lot more sense as the population is so much higher near Green Bay and the distance is enough that I don't see there being too much competition for entertainment dollars. Geographically a Low A team in Lacrosse or Eau Claire would be a great way to showcase the team across a bigger section of the state. Lacrosse in particular might be able to do fairly well, since there really is no competition remotely close when it comes to entertainment.
  4. It would have been really helpful if they had included the catchers Total Quarterback Rating as well. Maybe they could expand to properly judge the economic impact of the catchers by taking a look at how the stock market does on days they catch?
  5. I'd be partial to moving Wren up to AAA, and giving Roache a chance to see if he can keep hitting in AA. I'm not sure who would fill in at A+, but this potentially starts to cluster our most talented players a little more.
  6. Considering there are basically no methodological details I can't even begin to rate how reliable their measure of game calling actually is.
  7. Nothing wrong with playing the kids, but it also seems potentially shortsighted to rush a bunch of them up and burn 2 or easily even all 3 of their non-arby years on bad teams. Reed is looking very exciting, but he hasn't even hit 200 ABs at AA yet. Peterson makes some sense.
  8. Only one other person briefly truly touched on the central problem with the original post. Namely it conflates the strategic debate about trading prospects, which is something reasonable people can disagree on with attempting to sort of kind of score various trades and or FA signings that all happened at different times. The major problem with the second point is that it arbitrarily gives all kinds of points for how those players are doing right now without looking at the total value accumulated over all of those years. So many of those young players took multiple years of major league time to develop, time when they had very little value, and or especially given the number of OFers would have likely been benched or traded in favor of someone else. Similar inconsistency arises with Fielder who certainly looked like he was potentially done coming into the year and has a much less favorable contract than Braun.
  9. I guess I don't see that there is too much point in discussing Aiken, since whether or not it is a good move comes down to how his medicals look and we will never know that info.
  10. I really got into McFarland last year, there might be more to offense than batting average but it is still the most important one and I find myself getting very interested in guys who can hit over .300.
  11. I have this slight dream that the T-rats will start to have a few things click in the next couple of weeks, and the second half team will just tear into people as the talent develops. It's good to have dreams. Admittedly I'd settle for a couple of the young guys improving to closer to their talent levels.
  12. I guess the big question is with his swing how much in game power can Arcia add even if he bulks up some? I'd be vary happy if it was mostly gap power if he could keep that batting average up there in the .330 range. An excellent defender with elite contact would be a very exciting player at SS.
  13. Very happy for Prince, hopefully his bounce back last long enough to avoid becoming the next Ryan Howard/ Mo Vaughn
  14. I have doubts that when it comes to money Gaza or Lohse represent any significant hurdle. Average veteran starting players seem to be worth about 15/million on the market these days, so assuming normal performance both guys are arguably underpaid. Conversely the commitment is small enough that it wouldn't be too hard to imagine the Brewers off setting some of the salary if there truly was a budget issue with a team. It does seem like there might be more starters available than usual at the deadline this year, but I do think both are pretty useful assets good enough to potentially make a difference and also not really expensive in terms of prospects. And the relatively short term of the money could look quite attractive to a team like the Royals, paper over the hole on the roster without giving up too much in either money or prospects.
  15. Edited, I meant Ben
  16. Ben Hendrickson, I was absolutely convinced that anyone who could pitch that well in High Desert would be guaranteed some kind of major league career. The fact that he had the year he did in High Desert as a breaking ball guy is still amazing.
  17. I read some of the pre-draft stuff, but not enough to remotely be an expert but I thought this was something of a down year in the draft. Which suggests a rather big tactical swing and a miss to me on the part of the Braves. In the current rule system I love the strategy, but if you don't even have a chance to actually get 2 or more cornerstone players because he talent isn't there that doesn't sound super exciting.
  18. Unless some crazy stuff happens in the last innings in AA and A+ it's been quite the pitching night organization wide. AAA has a ways to go, but majors through minors as of right now they have only given up 2 runs total.
  19. I know Doug loves to trade the bats during the winter, but I agree that Sardinas' value is really letting the Brewers trade Segura while he is established enough to upgrade a contender, but young enough that he is highly valued. Enough so that with having both Rivera and Arcia nearby he might arguable one of your best first trading chips. Get the best guys you can for him and Gomez (different deals) then you take a look at how your talent seems to be lining up. The other players we deal are much less likely to bring in fantastic prospects, so I think it makes more sense to try and use those deals to plug in holes in the minors to build a viable team.
  20. I noticed during one of the games a week or so ago that Uecker was jumping in a lot more during his off innings then usual. I think it might have been the game they got locked in the booth. It was good stuff, I certainly wouldn't mind more of that going forward. My recollection over the years is that Ueck's best stuff usually happen late in games where he'd pulled in Pat Hughes or Jim during their off innings.
  21. Micheal Reed got his OPS over .900 tonight as well. I had said good 4th OF before, but I thought the same thing about Micheal Brantley once upon a time. I wonder if his batting eye is playing stronger as he climbs and is getting more pitches closer to the zone?
  22. I've been very happy that Roache has been able to keep it going as it gives me some confidence that he can continue to make the adjustments to do OK with the marginal contact, but it would sure be nice to see some improvement in that part of his batting line as the season goes on.
  23. I'm excited with Rivera's promotion to have a reason to look more seriously at the AAA box scores. Reed up to a .861 OPS. What is his defense like in the corner OF spots?
  24. Is our manager younger than their starting pitcher? Can we have a contest where they each face off by pitching to each other?
  25. Micheal Reed with another huge OBP day today. I'm really intrigued about him as a potential 4th OF. I'm curious how he compares at the plate to say Schafer. On the stat lines both are light in the power department, but Reed is hitting better at a younger age at AA than Schafer overall, and has consistently put up excellent walk numbers.
