  1. If I might step in for Geno on this thread and give some conspiracy theory spin to explain the sheer lunacy of Gagne's last 4 days. Day 1- Gagne realizes he ain't got it, not sure what the problem is and has an honest moment with the media Day 2- Boras yells at Gagne swearing up and down about all the money his pathetic honesty and honor just cost them. Boras berates Gagne into having a change of heart. Your a closer! Day 3- Gagne parrots agent's words and pitches a blah couple of innings. Day 4- Boras still not convinced that he'll be able to get another 8 fiugre deal next year threatens Melvin with Prince demanding a trade and generally being exceptionally difficult if Yost doesn't let his closer be a closer.
  2. If Escobar keeps improving with the stick Southern League pitchers might start bring the batting practice screen out with them. If Angel is playing Everyone except Escobar and the pitcher has a .800+ OPS (OK technically Brantley is a shade under, but how do you dis a .410 OBP from a lead off guy?)
  3. When was the last time we hit a HR with someone on base?
  4. Given how much the big league budget went up this year I hope that the team allocates enough of a budget to be aggressive with these picks. Not saying that everyone needs to cater to people who want huge contracts, but I think ti would be a waste of the opportunity to have one normal slot pick and then fill the rest out with cheap signers. Needs and what not I'd just as soon Jack went with the best bat left at #16 (since that always seems to workout very well) and then go after pitchers maybe mixing in some position guys if they are a good value at that draft position.
  5. Has David Weiser weighed in anywhere on Gamel's defense? He'd be in a good position to compare say Braun and Gamel's qualities at this point.
  6. That's an awesome picture. Maybe Brian should put it on his profile page http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
  7. It's hard to believe that this is the same team that lead the league in HRs last year, and they added more power to the line-up.
  8. Laporta's bat would give the team the best chance to win, however with the defense issue and the 40-man issue there is something to be said for bringing up Nelson and haing him play first while Prince DHs a game or two, and maybe play some OF while other guys get the semi-off day. With him it's kind of a chance to see if he is in the future and reasonably improve the teams chance to win. I also wonder if the offense is still sputtering along if that doesn't make the case for using Laporta more compelling to get a jump start.
  9. I took a look at baseballprospectus' minor league EQA numbers for Brantley and it looks pretty positive. They do a translation of the players current performance and what it would look like at the big league level, and in that he fairs OK, but the SLG comes out not so good. but they do another one for a peak translation (i.e. being all he can be) and they project he could add .050 to .060 points onto the SLG which gets him into .300/.400/.400 type territory.
  10. It's borderline amazing that the Brewers haven't scored more runs with all these hits. Someday the power will return.
  11. We can't judge Gamel's defense just on error rate. On error rate alone Braun was merely not good. It was all the plays he never got close to making that mad him tremendously awful. Other things to think about are that before the 3 error game his pace for the season was more like 20 or so. I'm not optimistic his defense can get where it needs to be to play third, but he's already made a big jump so far this year, so let's just see where it goes, because if he can make it the line-up could border on historically special.
  12. I Gamel learns to play a passable third base, that line-up would be beyond sick (assuming Hart slides to CF). That would pretty much be a lead-off guy and 6 clean-up hitters. Realistically I just don't see it happening, and my guess is that after last year Melvin is only going to be so willing to hang his pitchers out there with a bad defense.
  13. Hart is probably better in the two spot than Cameron due to having a higher OPS, therefore he'd get more ABs, and his higher average would be nice there (getting Weeks over to third). More importantly though while Cameron may not be the savior, at some point this team is going to remember it led the league in HRs last year and the offense will start. And there's decent odds it happens shortly after Cameron comes back. Poof we have the sports equivalent of causality. So be prepared for lots of Mike Cameron 2008 spark that propelled the team.
  14. His bat could earn him a trade. Defense or not there has got to be some team out there who would like that bat enough as a prospect to trade for it.
  15. Percentages strongly suggest that between last night and tonight the short bench has cost us at least 1 game
  16. The defensive position is arguable, but having to resort to Counsell as your pinch hitter in the bottom of the 9th is the real killer. Craig is very useful in lots of pinch situations, but that situation requires a power hitter. With two outs just about everyone on the team is a threat to score from first on a double due to speed (or lumbering freight train size). Alternatively a HR is also a game winner. With two outs those are way more useful than hoping Counsell doesn't make an out and that the next guy can then hit a single.
  17. He started off with the sub .300 batting average, so I didn't realize how well he was hitting until a few days ago and then LaPorta got really hot. An OPS over 1.000 in Huntsville, no one does that Corey won his MVP award with an OPS in the .800's! Maybe they really want him to work on defense, but that OPS in that league is going to result in Bonds like treatment pretty fast.
  18. Really what we actually have is the perfect bullpen to blow-up the Larussian model, and go almost to more of a rotation (not strictly speaking) where guys are assured regular work. If you have a quick hook with Turnbow there is a very modest difference in abilities between Riske, Gagne, Mota, Turnbow, and Torres. Differences that can easily be exaggerated by over or under use. Stetter and Shouse would still be situational guys though Stetter looked pretty good last night in longer work. And really Mcclung needs to go to have a more reasonable number of pitchers.
  19. I do not follow racing closely at all, but it certainly seems like Patrick has more top ten finishes then say Dick Trickle in his entire career.
  20. There is an awful lot of criticizing bad outcomes instead of bad decisions by Yost when it comes to the bullpen, but if there is one thing he cannot do, it is manage more than 5 bullpen arms. His closer inevitably gets ridden into the ground as he'll pitch in any save situation (only a weakling can't pitch 4 days in a row!) and his players at the end of the bullpen never see work and then stink when they finally do because they go so long in between appearances. The non-Mclung relievers on the staff are all pretty close in ability, so in theory while each has strengths and weaknesses they could all see plenty of set-up work and keep everybody fresh. Melvin ought to whip out the game logs and usage patterns and go through inning by inning this year and explain to Yost in great detail where there were situations he could have used everyone better, because he clearly doesn't understand.
  21. I haven't seen him play, but he seems to have enough power that it is not an issue. I do like his profile, seems somewhat similar to Cirillo good defense very high OBP patient at the plate and high average with gap power. I like Hall and his production is fine, but the major league line-up could use more high OBP guys because their power is so good already.
  22. I've realized how truly bad Braun was at third last year, I still cringe and then get excited everytime the announcer says a ball is hit to third. I'd been totally conditioned that a hit towards third = hit. Yeah Hall!
  23. It's not like we haven't had A Gabe start the year smoking hot before and then return to his more usual level of production. Oh Wait Gross did the same thing 2 years ago.
  24. I would imagine so, and that AA line-up might be the best overall I've seen from the Brewers in the last 8 years+ in the minors. LaPorta, Gamel, and Angel is some serious power, but having complimentary guys in Errecart, Gillespie, Escobar and Brantley is pretty impressive.
