  1. I do believe Jeter's skill set looks better at second then third, and did at the time as well.
  2. The August 18th game was the only game where Sabathia was left in long enough to have been potentially troublesome. It's not like we can magically take these 8 innings off and squeeze them into another start at the end of the year. Odds are pretty good he's going to pitch 3 consecutive starts on short rest, and it does not follow at all that what you assert to be extra innings would some how carry over now. There were many problems with the way Ned handled his pitchers, but Sabathia was not generally over worked except for that one start.
  3. Just throw this out there: Hall and Weeks for Adrian Beltre and have Escobar play second. Offer CC a huge contract, and trying and keep things going by replacing hitters from the farm system.
  4. I've been completely absent from the fire Yost threads largely because I think pretty much every manager has strengths and weaknesses and judging them one game at a time is problematic. In general it's been clear that Yost has difficulty managing a bullpen, but that by itself isn't enough to justify this kind of move. Nor do I think the desperation argument is one that works against this. This team was desperate and should have been after the weekend. I was purposely not listening to the games for crying out loud and I've been routing here since the bad only Dean Taylor days. Sundays bullpen move with Shouse was so inexplicably bad that it was enough to fire him on the spot. There is no alternative to make it a good move. A lot of these moves that are bad you can come up some half hearted counter argument. There simply was none for the intentional walk and letting Shouse pitch to Burrell. It is inexcusable to make that kind of mistake. Sending a base runner can happen in the heat of the moment misjudged kind of way. This was a deliberate decision. Given all of the other things in the background as well it is perfectly justifiable to use it as the final straw and make a convincing argument that he was going to actively hurt the teams chances in a significant way. The replacement might not be better, but after last year's collapse it was the right move.
  5. I haven't heard a White Sox broadcast, but I feel bad for Pat Hughes. He somehow manages to remain completely professional while sitting next to a raving drunk. Having XM I can certainly vouch for the idea that listening to most other teams radio guys is at best tolerable the Dodgers being one clear exception. Vin Scully is the Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig of broadcasting all in one package.
  6. Gindl is making a late statement to move up the Power 50 as a top flight prospect with performance and upside. Though he is going to have to work on the K rate (not a problem when you get a hit every AB of course)
  7. Not that I would wish this but Bork's observation is significant. If the Cubs were to fall back just a bit and there were another strong wild card contender down the stretch you could see the Brewers-Cubs rivalry go to whole new levels. You could even heap on the possibility of then meeting again in the playoffs. It would be shocking for there not to be some ejections or something at that point. Anyways the teams goal has to be World Series, however that doesn't mean we should saddle ourselves with disappointment after getting a playoff birth.
  8. If Weeks, Corey, and Cameron get on we could score a fair chunk of small ball runs too. Of course two of them can't hit for average and the other thinks walks are for old fogeys.
  9. You have good flexibility at the end of the season too if the last game against the Cubs is meaningless you can hold CC pitch Mclung and have CC and Sheets go 1-2 to start the playoffs.
  10. Anybody have a sense of how well Heether's defense is at SS? It's not like they need a lot of innings at SS, but it would be handy from a budget perspective to not have your utility IF paid over 3 million.
  11. A large part of the difficulty is that with such a small bench Ned has learned how to manage that way. Certainly you don't need as many pinch hitters for the pitchers spot if they are going deep, but Any of the third base trio could be pinch hit for. You could certainly make a case for hitting for Weeks with Durham. It might be useful to have enough righties and lefties to ensure a platoon advantage in a key 8th or 9th inning AB, so what if you burn to guys? Kendall, Rivera, and Prince could all be pinch run for. Prince could also be replaced defensively. Given the difficulty getting the current bullpen work we are doing actual harm to them by carrying so many, and we might be able to find a small tactical advantage with an expanded bench.
  12. I like Corey and all, but I do wonder if he is a guy really worth holding onto long term when we have so many other quality OF bats. I'm not saying don't sign an extension, but it really makes more sense to hold the rare talents and cycle the good talents. Based on that I really think you at a minimum go hard after CC and ignore this silly noise about how next year we won't be as strong. We might not be as strong, but it's not like we are going to stink.
  13. I was doing a little statistical exercise this morning. Thinking back to those hallowed days when Kevin Barker was our number 1 prospect. Unfortunately I don't have any good scouting info on him, but statistically he kind of fits in as a mixture of Brad Nelson and Chris Errecart. Looking back I was surprised to note that he had kept playing through 2005 and even had some other big league ABs. Based on that one could argue that we have 20 players in the minors better than Barker was, though on some level that almost feels low to me. Barker was always pretty much right on track age wise coming up, but until he played in Lousville he played in the Pioneer league, the California league, and then the Texas league. His number look pretty week until he essentially repeats AAA if you do some adjusting for league. On some level it does make me wonder if Nelson and Errecart are somewhat too high on the list, on the other hand it's just plain fun to look at all the bats we have in the system.
  14. Why wait three weeks for one of these position players? We have had too many arms in the bullpen certainly since Sabathia came on board, but even before that we had our pen throwing less innings than just about anyone else. Between Mclung, Torres, and Villy you have three guys who can easily go multiple innings if the need arises. Riske has done it as well. Ned isn't the greatest at handling playing time, but even a pinch runner would be more valuable to this team the next 3 weeks than Mota.
  15. WHIP is going to give you a little bit more information because it looks at walks and hits. BAA is going to fluctuate a lot based on the defense behind the pitcher whether they are GB or FB and just plain luck. WHIP is a little less sensitive because walk rate is entirely in the pitchers control.
  16. I think the argument could be made that at this stage of the game Green would be the best to go and shift Lawrie to third. I like Green's game, but even if he hits like Cirillio he still doesn't have the same defensive upside that made Jeff a really underrated player in Milwaukee. I do think the point is important that being inside the top 10 is still pretty high praise for Brantley. I'm comfortable with him as the 5th best hitting prospect and were you choose to throw Jeffress in that mix is almost entirely subjective based on your preference for ceiling vs. risk. Brantley is tough to really peg because his combination of youth, walk rate, and contact rate are quite unique. He truly out does the Tom goodwins and Juan Pierre's of the world on those metrics. It's not entirely fair but given his profile his top level ceiling might be best compared to Ichiro! without the completely whacky batting style.
  17. While skepticism is certainly warranted with young guys and Helena or small sample A ball stats. It's still kind of sick that Jack spends almost no draft picks on hitters and still finds a couple of guys that can just rake. His athlete tool picks don't tend to work out so well, but does he ever miss on bats?
  18. I do believe however that the Reds are already complaining about Arroyo salary and it's due to go up as well. So I think there's reason to believe that they'd love to rid themselves of perceived dead weight and get some kind of value. Who else are they going to be paying next year with Griffey and Dunn gone?
  19. I think more people should read some of Joe Sheehan recent musings about how badly things have swung to far towards under using veteran pitchers. His take home message if they are over 25 don't sweat anything under 120, and 120-130 on rare occasions is not the end of the world. In that context we have not been anywhere close to abusing CC. On some level he's kind of worked himself into that Greg Maddux zone where you can't work the count because you'll get down 0-2, and if you swing too early he can rack up innings with very small pitch counts. Just a further note on abuse Sheehan points out that back in the early 90's and before 130+ starts were common and 140+ starts weren't all that rare just ask Cal eldred.
  20. Might I say how annoyed I am to be saddled here in MN with the White Sox and the Royals game.
  21. Here's an interesting target the Reds and Bronson Arroyo. The are getting freaked out by his ERA, but his K rate and K/BB are actually better this year than the three years previously! Predictably his batting average allowed has risen which is almost definitely random fluctuation. His HR rate has increased somewhat, but if you take him out of that park I bet that turns around real fast and you have a 200 inning pitcher with an ERA in the low to mid 4's. Ask for say Mike Lincoln and Arroyo for Suppan and see what happens.
  22. In the Macgyver pilot the actor who plays Pete Thorton plays a role in the episode, but does not personally know Macgyver. In fact It takes at least an entire season ( I can't remember exactly) before the Phoenix foundation becomes a recurring part of the show. It is quite a remarkable transformation as essentially all of that first season is inconsistent with the story line of the other 6 seasons. Macgyver was originally a Vietnam vet who was an expert bomb diffuser (among other super spy traits)!
  23. This could be an opportunity to challenge a couple of those older catching prospects we have at A+ and A ball...
  24. How about a skinnier Brad Nelson for Caleb comparisons Jim?
  25. If Ichiro got 3000 hits in MLB that would be amazing. It would get people talking because that would put his MLB + Japan total in Rose territory.
