  1. I thought about the baserunning a bit, but actually that was the perfect situation to be aggressive. Runner on 3rd could have tagged on that Sheets fly which is about the best outcome you can hope for with him at bat. So there's very little downside to being thrown out as both Kendall and Weeks best offensive skill is walks not singles to score a runner with two outs.
  2. Taylor Green wasting no time in trying to make Matt Gamel, can he play 3rd questions, irrelevant. I'm curious to see how he'll do in AA, since that usually is the place that seperates the unheralded guys who can make it from those who can.
  3. Why was Salmon Torres pitching today? If you don't put Mcclung in now when do you plan on pitching him? Turnbow? I can only assume at least one of them will pitch, but the most Yost thing would be Mota and Gagne for the 8th and 9th.
  4. If Gamel figures out how to field and Alciedes can hit .300 it really solves a number of long term questions about how many years we can sustain the big league team. No doubt Huntsville is the team to watch right now.
  5. Bush has underperformed where I thought he could be, but about so dramatically that I assume he can be kicked to the curb. If we do continue to have a rotation crunch when Gallardo comes back. I'd be interested in the idea of putting Bush in the pen. I had forgotten that he was a very good closer in college, and the switch back might benefit him more than other pitchers.
  6. rlunziski, I believe you are incorrect about making up the projection gap. I noticed this last year and it makes more sense when you think about it. If you figure out the expected wins for the Brewers in this series given each teams projected records and the home field to the Cubs it at worst for the Crew would work out to only say 1.3 wins. Which means that if they lost today they'd only gain 0.7 wins over projections. And if they sweep it still only 1.7 wins and I think the closest I saw them was 2 games. If you also calculate how much ground the Cubs have lost I think it works out then only if we sweep.
  7. With all that young talent the Reds may have had a legit 5-10% chance to make the playoffs this year, but hiring Dusty virtually guarantees that all of the things that would have to happen for them to get to say 85 wins won't happen.
  8. I only get to listen but I'm on spring break this week!
  9. Last year for sure and even the year before that it was pretty clear that Yost IV was not getting prospect treatment. You need utility/bench guys in the minors just like in the majors, so I don't see any particular harm. Now if he had spent 6 years getting starter ABs and blocking other players I could see a reason for concern.
  10. I started my licensure program when I was 26. I had thought about it after I graduated college but was convinced to try something else first. I love being able to share my passion for science. I encourage you to try and swing some kind of volunteer opportunity in a school first. A lot of people like the idea of teaching and then find out that managing students is not something they signed up for, but it's a huge part of the job. You also need to expect your first couple of years to be rocky. It takes some practice to get things right.
  11. Speed, ceiling, velocity, and general approach at the plate cannot be taught. Basically if you look at the 5 tools vs. the seven skills approach you get a pretty good idea about what parts are teachable. Plate discipline is kind of tricky because you can help a free swinger to swing at less junk, but he will never draw a lot of walks, unless he becomes so ridiculously good that he never sees anything to hit (and he still might swing anyway). Sosa is the only reformed free swinger I know of.
  12. With Lucroy he looks promising, but the only players that flameout as fast as pitchers are A ball catchers. In regards to Salome with Melvin the parser of words he could have been not counting Angel merely because he was suspended.
  13. If I might interject, we are looking at getting a Wii. I've got two questions, one what is the best way to get a console in the next 5-6 weeks. I've looked at a couple of tracker sites, but based on the logs it looks like a lot of the retailers sell out quickly (minutes). I'm not interested in buying used, and or inflated prices. I don't mind some of the more modest bundles ,but I don't see the point in getting 6 games only one of which might actually get played. Do most in store retailers still have like a waiting list you can pre order through? Second question what extra hardware do I really need? The most appealing games to my family would be Mario kart, Wii sports, Super Smash Brothers Brawl, Zelda, and then a lot of the old Sega and Nintendo games. I think that means that we need 2 new controllers, and then 2 classic controllers. are there are things that wewould need beyond the extra controllers?
  14. I guess I read into that comment that they felt he had made enough defensive progress that they felt that at some point he could do the job full time. I don't see anything worrisome about the comment if he can throw out about 20% of base stealers he wouldn't be great, but good enough not to have a track meet and his bat would put him in the middle of the pack or so for catchers. It is generally a pretty barren position.
  15. I agree with the Rottino thing his defense seems to have garnered the most praise of the three and if nothing else that carries a lot of weight in the back-up catcher department. This 140 games from Kendall thing needs to not be reality though. Old catcher coming off some injury racked poor seasons is not a match for hyper catcher durability. Even if Kendall does bounce back quite a bit that past will have him totally fried by August. 120 games caught and some pinch hitting for 10-20 games is much better than acting like he'll start all the time.
  16. The most useful thing about speed is using to identify old player skills. Which tells us that Hall, Weeks, Hart, and Braun will all probably age very well and still be pretty good looking ball players at 35. Prince is a bigger risk to drop off. Speed by itself isn't the only thing that figures in, but it does remind us that a Jason Giambi aging pattern is a much better likelihood than say Ted Williams.
  17. I am deeply depressed. When I said that Brett retired and that there was more bad news my wife incorrectly guessed bad Brewer news, which does put a positive spin on the whole situation. Long live the prophet of Lake Genevea.
  18. Good grief everytime Cecil opens his mouth he sounds exactly like some addiction riddled ruined wreck of a TV parent. You know the kind that shows up in the scripts of all your favorite dramas. He would be better off just keeping quiet and humble.
  19. Apparently they had already done recordings with him as the voice of KITT this time around before they realized there was a contract program because he was signed to do commercials for another car manufacturer (Chrysler I believe). All in all I'd say it was solid.
  20. If it happened quickly there is something to be said for being built to do well with a ready supply of surplus hitters, but overall I just don't see it unless there has been some kind of covert survey done by management and they know something we don't.
  21. AKA Pete it looks like you really do misunderstand what PECOTA gives in terms of projections that no other system does. Namely it gives you more than just the mean it let's you estimate the likely variance in player performance. A projection system is not going to reliably predict player's actual performance beyond a certain point. It's way more useful to have a mean (50th percent) projection and know what the down and upside of a player looks like (25th and 75th percentiles). Some players are going to have fairly narrow bands others will have big spreads.
  22. My 2 year old daughter loved her first Tom Petty show. I thought it was solid. I strongly suspect that given the time constraints it is wuite difficult to get an ideally concert balanced sound system working with the normal broadcast balance.
  23. The fact that Angelos seems to be tanking a trade because it's all prospects is something of a reason to believe that the Brewers could figure something out. Personally I try to hold onto Parra for a variety of reasons one being that he gives you 6th starter insurance that you can option up and down as needed for this year. I think 2 of the Bush, Vargas, Cappy trio and 2 good prospects is potentially intriguing given the Angelos factor.
  24. I'm kind of torn on what sort of "strategy" I would like this June. What seems clear is that with that many picks a good job by Jack in this draft could be enough to turn a 4-5 year window into a decade of sustained excellence. Jack's batting average on early round hitters is off the charts good. Seemingly his notable early round weakness has been drafting pitchers. The paradox really seems to be that outside of adding a another name to the catcher position and third base and CF, pitching is the best area to build more depth. Further it seems unlikely that the team would necessarily find good matches at all three position of "need". I guess in my stream of consciousness a good first day for me would look something like this. 1st round pick best player of 3rd, catcher, or CF. Supplemental 1st one of the two picks on another position guy and then the next best pitchers they can find. In terms of the long term and cranking out more high quality talent going early to Jacks strength in hitters (without going for just one position) and then stocking up on a number of similarly ranked pitchers seems like the best bet to me to generate another core type group of prospects to carry the team into the post 2012 years.
