  1. I like the Hall steal to set out the RBI op. Just because I know the steal is a tough percentage play doesn't mean I don't like it especially with Scotty 15-1 success ratio, and Hall's been pretty good too. Now Cap with the Lead-off double let's add on!
  2. It's also worth pointing out that last year's farm success was rather rare. One of the thngs going into that season I talked about was the jump. We had climbed the prospect charts largely through having a number of years where none of our top prospects was "lost" guys that failed to succeed at the next level. In many ways that was an incredible string since the only major bad events last year where Nelson's wrist, and Hendrickson and Jones missing half a season. So far this half we've gotten a little more than our fair share of struggles, but nothing earth shattering. There's something to be said for tasting failure in the minors before the majors.
  3. Why would it take Rogers 6-7 years to fix his mechanics? As a High schooler we have him for 4 years before he has to be on the 40 man roster and burning options. I'd be concerned if his mechanics hadn't noticeably improved by then.
  4. Heether can't possibly be a real prospect he's one of those Moneyball freaks walking hitting homers and playing in college. What was Jack Z thinking drafting a kid out of college http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/roll.gif . Yep top third basemen in the system and all the scrutiny that goes with it. Hoffy better add him to the saviors list.
  5. Interesting that Heether is showing way more over thefence pwoer with wood this year than in college. His statistical record is now quite a bit stronger than it was a few weeks ago when we started to notice the hot streak. For a full season of ABs he projects to about 60 walks 110 Ks 25 HRs and 40 doubles. Pretty good totals for the Midwest league and unless I'm wrong his strikeout rate has declined quite a bit the last few weeks which bodes well for the future.
  6. Can Saenz catch on days he's not pitching, getting his bat in the line-up certainly wouldn't hurt. Both Weeks and Prince having pretty good games today.
  7. Maybe they were just trying to psyche out the opposition?
  8. I guess I wouldn't have a problem ifthe Brewers decided to punt on Wes and install Ben as the 4th man in the rotation skipping Wise or Santos. Then again both ofthose guys are due for something of a reality check and waiting to promote Ben until someone is getting hammered isn't a bad plan either. Ben can pitch into the low 90's nad his curve is awesome. I'd give him even odds at being an innings eater #3, 10% a #2 and another 10% a #4 with the remainder a burnout most likely due to injury.
  9. Carts and horses and all that, but the Brewers sure are setting themselves up for a great homestand performance and attedance wise. Sheets today looks very promising plus Pete Munro on the otherside, he's done alright, but certainly no Oswalt or Clemens. Then a midweek series against the Mariners, talk about opportunity to have some buzz going into next weekend. For those keeping track at home attendance is now up 20% from last year nearing the 20K mark per game.
  10. Well the nice thing about having so many potential DFE's is that by time you get started signing guys it seems like your almost done. With Rogers being almost a sure thing it only seems like we've got a couple of key guys left to sign.
  11. Not to disparage your view point DHonks, but the point of my post was that JuCo players get the magic college player dust atleast from the statistical perspective.
  12. If the Brewers have the expected 15-20 DFE candidates they really drafted far and away mostly college players no didn't they? Because when they sign those guys they will have all had college experience. It's not a symantic argument because those kids would all be drafted next year a few days later as college kids when we make our decision on them. We're basically double dipping with such an extreme DFE philosophy. We get to take a first look at these kids, and pick and choose the ones that look better with more established competion. Plus we really save on the roster space and the potential cost of running another minor league team. Fearless prediction: When the A's finish their run and Beane looks to restock the old farm system rather then keeping it just good enough to get him another player every year he'll do something similar for a couple of years and draft a bunch of DFE's
  13. Now I could attempt to scrounge up a comprehensive list, but what is currently escaping hoffy and others is that our system is entirely devoid of the beast I call the "Minor League Masher". These are players who way back, when Reed was talking about our great minor league team records and prospects, where a prime explanation. These are the 4A vets who go to AAA and absolutely kill the ball, and Liefer is really the only guy in the system like that and he's been promoted. Our AAA championship team had like 2 or 3 atleast. Jim Rushford largely fit the bill for a couple of years. Other luminaries include Brian Lesher, and Bobby Darula. Keith Luola (sp) was a middle infield version the last few years. Derek Lee was a pitching version. Regardless of the prospect performance the abscense of these types of performers will hurt a minor league teams record, while we go with almost nothing but young guys some of whom will struggle.
  14. Alright there's an awful lot of hyperbole about our bullpen, but the truth is none of them are that much better than average right now. Kolb? common that K rate screams to me that he's been unbelieveably lucky this year. Most of the other relievers have decidely non impressive K rates. Only Vizcaino approaches a K per inning and everyone else is at about 5 per nine which is unimpressive. To rate anybody as clearly better than anyone else (including Viz whose HR proness kills a lot of the value of his K/BB ratio) is rather silly. Bennet was indeed walking on thin ice towards the beginning of the year then seemed to find some stuff and start King guys, to the point he could be evolving into a pretty good reliever (or not). Kinney may yet get there as well, but none of these guys are even approaching dominant, so I'm happy as long as everyone gets consistent work.
  15. Why play with your Brother in law when you can face off against him in a pennant race in September http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/devil.gif
  16. Yeah I noted where Kahn was as well, a little sting in that one. Of course he's a COLLEGE pitcher now so he's much better http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/roll.gif . I also saw John Mayberry, who did the Mariners waste there replacement pick on for not signing him?
  17. Well I usually swear when dropping gels, I laugh at stupid things like forgetting to add citrate to MD medium and the like. http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/happy.gif
  18. I'll give a shot at calming Hoffy down. Your basically looking for an excellent quality college pitching prospect. And I think the simplest answer was that by the time we picked the player you were looking for wasn't there anymore. If your going to get a college guy with a #2 ceiling you want to be confident he'll be near that ceiling. A guy like Verlander you can't be sure of anything. Similar with Nieman and the ever changing fastball velocity. Townsend the guy everybody wants to turn into a closer the second he hits a rough patch in the 3rd inning? Humber was gone. That left Weaver, who I would have prefered on merit, but there's a reasonable case to be made that his likely performance was middle of the road (#3) as opposed to above average (#2). For this you wanted the team to sacrifice either the ability to sign numerous other draft picks this year, or MLB player salary for next year? The Giants already determined that they'd rather spend their money on an MLB player than a draft pick (a very bold decision, not that I agree but bold). Now I'm sure you could come back with well they should just spend the money, but Hoffy you know it ain't gonna happen. And given the general success rate squeezing in 3-4 other desireable prospects goes a long way to covering the risk spread so to speak.
  19. I wonder if they'll let him pitch (Miller) his whole senior year if he does well in summer league?
  20. There have been some incredibly dumb stupid and down right hypocritical things said, but to take Prince and Rickie laughing as the sole evidence for their work ethic is all of those things. And why is that Igor? Because some people like myself find laughter to be very useful in dealing with a variety of stressful situations. And if they ain't caring about how they play how can it possibly be stressful???? Now I admit to being rather extreme in my use of laughter to diffuse tense situations, but everyone does. This is on par with looking at last night's box score and proclaiming that Brady Clark should start in LF because he is clearly superior. Remember some of the most useful words you will ever learn are "I don't Know" which is exactly what most of us know about the situation/motivations in question.
  21. My counterpoint FVBrewerfan was that Nelson isn't hitting so well that he has to be promoted. The only way promoting Nelson helps the team is if Corey falls flat and Nelson tears it up or both do well and someone offers us a great package for Jenkins (terribly unlikely). The scenario's for bad things happen outweigh the good ones both in number and likelihood.
  22. I'd have to say there's no pressing reason to promote Nelson. He's doing well at Huntsville, but isn't totally destroying the league and his K rate is quite high. He's got stuff to work on, and worse yet it contributes to a potential problem of what to do with the Corner OFs? If you promote Nelson and he does hit well in AAA then how do you get MLB time right out of the gate next year for Jenkins, Hart and Nelson? Promoting Saenz has some merit though I'd have to think about it longer since our pitching situation is more complex and I'm not as sure about the risk/rewards for promoting him.
  23. Man I was already at work a good inning before the game got over, and it would be a shame if I didn't post atleast once on "the Thread".
  24. I've become less concerned with the college/high school thing over the last year or so. By a variety of metrics college pitchers as a group do better. But the difference isn't very prononounced after round 1. Within round one if you go back and order all the pick in hindsight there's still high school pitcher's that should be drafted before other college pitchers. In the end it seems to me that the difference between high school and college is about equal to good vs. bad scouting maybe even less. And for the moment I'm willing to let Jack do his thing. Especially since high school pitchers might be the newest undervalued commodity http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  25. huh interesting trivia maybe we should archive this when someone asks why he's not playing. Maybe he can wait until Helena sneeks north of the border http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif
