  1. I'm content to keep the lead for the last half inning and call it good.
  2. Someone is going to get a fat one to hit at some point with men on base right?
  3. Here's to us having the random pitcher no one has scene before befuddling the opposing hitters for once! I summon the Spirirt of Steve Woodard.
  4. If Gatewood was still at SS or maybe even 3rd do you think his start would have been enough to get him into BAs top 100?
  5. I don't see us exercising the option on Garza to be a place holder, and presumably we need to settle on viable potential candidates for next year which could be a fairly interesting year based on how well the team is doing so far. So under that guideline Garza does not have a lot of long term value to us. Certainly right now he's providing solid value in not tanking games and allowing players to avoid the general ill-will of a complete tank. Starting pitching is always in demand at the deadline and assuming Garza continues to pitch at atleast a league average rate he will have a decent trade value. Not a franchise altering prospect, unless you go super young lottery ticket type. Still value though in some fashion. With any luck players similar to Broxton, Pina, or Shaw who did not seem to have a ton of value but are contributing at a pretty high level.
  6. Just did a quick recalculation, Gatewood's strikeout rate for the whole season is actually down slightly (per plate appearance) from last year. Not enough by itself to be significant, but given that it is trending downward as the season goes on and he is doing this at a completely new level with the increased walk rate, batting average, and power increase it's real in a pretty significant way I'd say. I can support waiting before we move him to top 5 in the system, but he's got enough plate appearances in that those rate stats are stabilizing and new norms and not just hot streaks.
  7. It's got to feel pretty good being Gatewood right now.
  8. We found a Rookie pitcher we can actually get hits off from!
  9. Good Grief Thames just singled, I can't believe this horrible slump he's in. Where are the HRs?!
  10. Still a long way, but I for one am very exciting to be watching both Harrison and Gatewood light it up. The anecdotes and the stat line are in complete agreement that he has changed his approach dramatically and is working deeper into counts and doing so productively. His ISO is not up significantly at this point, but it is easy to see that coming along either as it warms up or just as he naturally gets use to this batting style the Power has been there and suddenly it looks like he might actually hit enough to be a real 1st base prospect. Lara deserves a little love for 2 walks last night as well.
  11. Rogers also knew when to hold 'em real well.
  12. I agree that Harrison has earned a chance to hit without reservation for awhile, and I just want to enjoy it. Orimoyle's line is not amazing but he is over a .900 OPS right now as well so that is pretty nice.
  13. I could see a solid reason to deal Braun and keep Thames if both are playing well and the team is doing say around .500. Basically OF is our most loaded position and while Braun's production is very good and might even be better then any of our current OF prospects can do over the rest of his contract he can net you the best potential return at other areas we aren't as deep and you can plausibly come close to replacing his production with a high likelihood of success. Thames if he is legit is almost certainly then the best Garrett Cooper could ever be, and after that your looking at Gatewood who could be amazing but is still quite raw and still in A ball. So if your thinking maybe next year the team can be young and maybe truly make a run at a wild card trading Thames probably opens a whole at first and doesn't likely net something awesome like a #1 or #2 starter.
  14. Who does that leave at first base?
  15. I don't see pitcher quality being an issue, quite the opposite even among good starters their first vs. second time through the order numbers are so much better that the pool of guys you could run out there who would give you solid results is much larger. Your long relievers could probably be rotated in in place of a regular guy every once in awhile as well to get them work with some little break for everyone else.
  16. Well the good thing is that at that height you can always see the Forrest through the trees.
  17. I read during football games instead of DVRing them. I find the multitasking very rewarding.
  18. It probably seems so weird because you might very well have known/ met people who were alive in 1908, but at best there are a few infants around now that would still be here...
  19. Why not just let the robots hit? What are we going to do if someone uncovers good film and does an analysis indicating errors in numerous historic World Series games?
  20. What exactly are we spending this saved money on if we non-tender him? The draft is capped as is the international market. I've never seen any evidence that an owner will stockpile cash to any great extent, so pay the man and hope someone needs him midseason.
  21. That's grade A baseball awesome.
  22. It's actually genius on Dillard's part help the team tank right as Uecker is winding down, so the new prospects round into the best team in history right as he prepares to take over and call the winning Game 7 World Series homer guaranteeing a lifetime of employment as broadcaster.
  23. Lot's of guy who hopefully can pick up a couple of things. Ifeven just a couple of the toolsy but raw hitters have a breakout year that would be huge.
  24. Actually its pretty hard to imagine there is any job outside of individual timed sports (i.e. track) that 30 people are specially qualified for and no one else is capable of. That's not how a bell curve works. There are so many factors not related to ones ability to evaluate baseball talent that keep people from ever being considered for a GM position. Rhetoric aside the original point was a solid one, its not terribly difficult to sit down with a few prospect publications answer phone calls and trade veterans. Any measurable skill that exists there is in figuring out which players to pick out of prospects of a certain caliber, which as Mr. Plush pointed out we won't know for some time yet. I'm certainly not saying Stearns has done anything other then a very good job from what I can tell, but collecting a bunch of prospects for veterans in and of itself is not hard. When it comes to actually judging moves in hindsight, I also think we over attribute too much to the skill of the evaluator and not enough to the unpredictability of development.
