  1. FYI, during Guidry's monster season, when he won something like 14 in a row, it was the Brewers who gave him his first loss. And I love that you would actually hold an argument over whether an imaginary Guidry would win 2 or 1.5 games against an imaginary team. Funny.
  2. Several years ago, I completed a Body-for-Life 12 week challenge, and while I was doing the diet and exercise program, I was also using EAS products. I used Myoplex meal replacement shakes, and Betagen which was (is?) their creatine product with also HMB (I think), and I also used their ephedra product (before I learned that people were dying from it). If I remember correctly, the recommended dose was 3 capsules twice a day, and I never took more than 2, twice per day. I would feel very VERY alert, and if I wasn't eating enough, would get a little jittery. Overall, the program worked great, I went from 192 lb. to 178, and went from not fitting into 36 pants into needing a belt with 34s. That was in 12 weeks time. I could see how someone overdosing on ephedra could really get into trouble, as I was definitely affected by it.
  3. There is nothing at all better than waking up on a camping trip, making a wood fire, and cooking eggs, bacon & pancakes over that fire. It's a pretty fair amount of work, but the rewards are sooooo worth it.
  4. Hey brewdude15. . .I just looked at your blogsite. Good luck with it. . .keep it timely, with regular updates and you'll get readers. It's a good summary of all the top sports stories in the state. I went to your message board, too, and became immediately disinterested when popups (actually popunders) were launched. Ads on the pages are fine, but I'm not a fan of new windows opening up for someone else's benefit. Other than that, just keep writing.
  5. Good post, KegStand81. . . I couldn't agree more-- Bombastic buffoonery at its best. Surly, grouchy dictator with a pea brain--but this time it's not the accomplished ship builder, but the dolt son, born into the family fortune. It's so clear that the media is just baiting him now, waiting for this blowhard to spit out something good. And he does it all the time. Just wonderful.
  6. Her first priority should be her child, not you. . .so if you're not ready, even after 8 months, to take him along on day trips or outings, then I think she would be best served to find someone who could date her as she is, accepting that means taking a secondary role. He already has a father--so you don't have to be one, but her boyfriend should expect some afternoon dates at the zoo, park, or video arcade with the two of them.
  7. Normally, I would rip into Tejada for being dishonest (and its easy to label him a scoundrel for his drug use as outlined in the Mitchell report). But to think about the deadend poverty he was facing if not for baseball, I can understand why he was willing to do anything and everything for a chance to avoid that.
  8. If you have kids, you cannot go wrong with a portable DVD player. I've got a little mini Panasonic with a 16:9 screen and I can get 5 hours out of the rechargable batteries. I think I spent around $265, give or take $50. I have the Wonder Pets playing behind my headrest, and my daughter's brain is turning to mush, but at least there's no crying, and she's not kicking my seat--so I guess that's a win-win. . .right?
  9. Thanks, pitchleague for the referral. I like that they have a cottage business in refurbishing old DVRs. That's cool, as opposed to turning these boxes into electronic waste. Plus, you can keep using these awesome Tivo machines.
  10. I have heard that there are no bargains to be had in the autograph area at the National--but others who have been there would be better to judge. My understanding is that you pay for parking, and admission, and then for each autograph you want to purchase. Tristar is managing the autograph process, and their website will probably list prices for each guy on a variety of objects. Tristar's website says tickets will be available starting in May. I don't know if they have exclusivity on all autograph guests. . .maybe some other booth holders might have their own guys come in to sign. . .just not sure. . . But it's certainly not just an autograph show. There are most of the top national dealers in attendance, with stuff ranging from the things you'd see in a Mastro or Robert Edward auction to stuff that you'd find at the local card shop. I think I'm going to go this year. . .but only if I can afford to come home with something. . .
  11. I have a Sony DirecTV standard definition receiver with Tivo. It's around 6 years old, and is probably on its last legs. . .but I still love it more than any other DVR I've seen. I had two of them, but when one died, I replaced it with the DirecTV one that they give away, and the Tivo's interface and intelligence was superior. It is so simple to record and watch shows. I understand that cable companies and satellite companies are doing their own thing in the DVR game, but I'd still like to see Tivo make it long term.
  12. The National Sports Collectors Convention is in Chicago (Rosemont) this year July 30-August 3. Is anyone planning on attending? I've never been to a National, but have heard it's quite a sight, and this might be a good chance to see some very cool stuff. I'm trying to make this one part of my summer plans. . . http://www.nsccshow.com/ http://www.tristarproductions.com/National/index.htm
  13. I would check the phone book for coin-op and amusement dealers. I don't know where you live. . .There used to be a neat place in Mundelein, IL that had pinball machines and some cool '50s style diner furniture. I have a pinball machine that I bought from TNT Amusements in Philadelphia. There is a place in West Allis that apparently will sell and service pinball games (maybe it's called Red's?). Any place that sells pinball games, table hockey, sliding puck bowling games, skeeball, jukeboxes, etc. would probably at least be able to offer a reference for the slider shuffleboards. They might also have wax. . .
  14. It's weird, the stuff that people pick up on. I don't like some guys for a variety of reasons. Mike Mussina, Jeff Kent, Eric Gagne, Richie Sexson, Jason Varitek, Miguel Tejada, Albert Pujols, Dustin Pedroia, Jonathan Papelbon, Carlos Delgado. . . I have never considered Soriano to be a hot dog.
  15. As a kid, a bowl of Golden Grahams usually led to another, and another. I'm also old enough to remember when Smacks were called Sugar Smacks, or Super Sugar Smacks. Honest product marketing. For some reason, as a kid, I thought it was cool to eat Life cereal, as if I had graduated to an advanced level of cereal eating. I still love Cap'n Crunch's Peanut Butter crunch, but now I pretend that I'm eating healthy by buying Peanut Butter Bumpers or some other organic version. And afterward, I spend 5 full minutes with at least 4 pieces of dental floss removing the cereal & milk compound that has formed between my teeth.
  16. I'm all for trying to catch lightning in a bottle. . .but with Weaver, it's more like "1.5V watch battery in a bottle". I hope the big club never has to find out what he's got left.
  17. Jenkins seems like a very fine fellow. He played hard, he was a homegrown Brewer and stayed with the big club for a long time. If he gets a standing ovation, then good for him. He had the misfortune of playing on some terrible teams, and it wasn't his fault that he was miscast as a 3rd-5th hitter. He was often their best option, and he gave it his all. He stayed out of trouble and was pretty classy. If he gets booed, then so be it. It will prepare him for Philadelphia all the more. He's a big boy and I'm doubtful that a couple of boos will bruise him, even though he probably doesn't deserve them.
  18. My thoughts are that you probably don't want "worlds to collide". Relationship George kills Independent George. Do you care about handbags or ladies shoes? Do you care where she gets her hair styled, colored and cut? Do you care about HGTV or the differences between shades of offwhite paint? Do you watch The View or Sex in the City? Do you like Drew Barrymore? Obviously, not all women like that stuff, but some do, and it would probably be unrealistic for them to expect you to jump in to their interests with both feet. I would bet they probably wouldn't even want you to. My wife likes all sorts of stuff. Some of that stuff, I like in my own way, and some of it--I couldn't care less. We don't have to share interests of every single thing. She loves technology and electronic gadgets. I don't. She reads design magazines all the time. Seriously--we subscribe to Dwell, Metropolitan Home, Azure, Plenty, New York Living, and she buys at least two different ones off the newsstand every month. I never even look at them. Why would you insist that the woman you date have the same interest in the Brewers and baseball as you? Allow the Brewers and your love of baseball to be your own special relationship, while at the same time, you nurture and develop a real human relationship with a woman. You can follow the team, and read the boxscores, and watch the games, and post stuff on here, etc. And, you can date a terrific person with her own interests and I'm sure you can find a happy balance.
  19. Booing is fine. Foul language and throwing stuff isn't. Getting into altercations with fellow fans isn't. If a guy isn't hustling, or seems to not have his head in the game, or if a guy has been disrespectful to the fans or the game, then boo and boo loudly. And of course, if the guy is a French Canadian, fatty closer with ridiculous facial hair and was recently named in the Mitchell report as a drug user, then boo him mercilessly, too.
  20. Street & Smith's certainly is a classic. . .as is Who's Who in Baseball. . .and Baseball Digest. . .and Athlon's Baseball preview was always loaded with good crisp color photos. And I did have one of the old AL Redbooks, too. I remember it being full of stuff I couldn't get elsewhere. And I had a 1975 Brewers Media Guide back in Junior High that got passed around among a few of my classmates and came back to me with pen marks and scribbling all over the cover. Dirty rotten losers.
  21. Funny post, Eric. . . Hopefully your marriage will avoid any DeJean/Royster moments.
  22. The Yankees were faced with this issue and the performance of Kyle Farnsworth. They kept him, even though he was mostly unusable during close games. I think there are enough spots in a bullpen where you can bury an underperforming guy, and just use him in unimportant spots while he tries to reclaim past glory. The problem with Gagne is that he doesn't seem to be able to be used for long stretches, so he's not going to save the staff by throwing for 3 innings at a clip. If he pitches ineffectively, there's no reason to keep handing the ball in the 9th. And if he accepts the demotion to a lesser role and doesn't cause problems, he should probably be around for the duration. The only situation I would see the Brewers cutting him would be around the trade deadline, if they were able to pick up another closer with Gagne grumbling.
  23. Sorry for you, TLB. . . My own story may be similar to yours (without the dog). My parents married in 1955, and in 1989 announced they were splitting up. I was 27 at the time, and was just married the previous year. It was a drag, in every way. I was comforted, actually, by sort of being into my own life by that point. I was living with my own wife, 45 minutes away, involved in my job and just really getting started into professional adulthood. I'd be fine going into more details away from the public nature of an internet message board. One of the worst things about it really, was that my sisters and I really were powerless about trying to make things better. Once my folks decided to split up, that was that. Best of luck to you in dealing with this bad episode in your life.
  24. I've decided not to call her back and if she calls me and wants to hang out I will. Bad idea. If you don't want to see her, then don't. If you don't want to date her, then don't. Don't be the guy who just stops calling. Be a man and tell her that you just don't feel the chemistry, and make an official break that is very clear and honest.
  25. I can't imagine there is any way that's lawful. There are right and wrong ways and places to compost.
