  1. In the short time that I've seen him, I have to say I've been disappointed in his game. I recognize that Mike Trout struggled in his first go-round, so Arcia is hardly a lost cause, but I was expecting more. His shortstop play is supposed to be his calling card, but last year seemed pretty ordinary to my eyes. He didn't look all that rangy. His arm was strong and accurate, but not eye-popping, at least to me. His hitting stats were worthy of hitting no higher than 7th or 8th. He didn't blaze on the basepaths. That said, he's young, cheap and under team control for a long time. He could still develop into a star. But his struggles remind us that prospects aren't sure things.
  2. Wear whatever you want. And don't let other people influence you--as if their definition of fandom is superior to yours...it's nonsense. I wear Brewers hats, an MLB Network hat, a Hall of Fame hat, Mets hats, Marlins hats. I get to decide what goes on my head, regardless of whether or not my friends approve.
  3. How was attendance compared to other years? A rebuilding team with lots of new faces seems like it wouldn't attract as many fans as a veteran team in contention.
  4. Mary Tyler Moore is a significant loss to people in their late 40s and older. She had two iconic roles in the time when network tv was part of all of our lives. She was beautiful and funny and a true tv star. RIP
  5. Jonah Keri was a big proponent of Raines, and was actively campaigning for him. I'm glad that Raines made it. Pudge and Bagwell are deserving, too. The steroid issue seems to be clarifying a little, with "whisper guys" getting through and "louder than whisper guys" making progress, but not enough to get to 75 percent. Trevor Hoffman surprised me, getting so close, but that saves total is impressive.
  6. The pace of play was awesome...The Easterly vs. Reggie AB was perfect in showing today's fan how quickly a pitcher can work.
  7. What happens if he gets caught again? 100 games? Full season? I don't know the rules. It's not much fun to root for guys who don't seem to be as into their careers as we are.
  8. Defensively inept? False. Santana is a better RF than Perez and it's not close. I'm not against Santana going to 1b but it'll be because there's a hole there, he's a massive target and the RFs coming up are above average/plus defensive OF (Phillips/Cordell). By both Fangraphs and B-Ref, Santana is a below average defender. He has 4 OF assists in 111 starts. I honestly can't remember even one highlight level play by him. His one redeeming quality is that he's not Ramon Flores.
  9. They didn't sign Carter until January last year, so Stearns must have confidence that there will be another guy available before spring. Carter is a fun player to watch, but he's still just a 1 win player. For $8+ million, at age 29, on a team that is still rebuilding, I can see why they would pass. He's not going to be on this roster when they are ready to compete, so I guess it's fine to let him go.
  10. I suspect that people of a later generation don't really get the cultural significance of The Brady Bunch, much in the way I don't get Saved By the Bell, etc. But the Bradys were the best, and Carol was the best. I think we all wanted our mom's to be more Carol-like. And after the show was over, Florence didn't do anything in her career or her life to diminish or stain the character of Carol. She remained the wholesome beacon of motherhood. Lots of celebrity deaths in 2016, but this one is the most significant to me.
  11. The song "Go Cubs Go" has crossed over to become devil music.
  12. As much as I enjoy ripping the Cubs franchise and their fans, that was quite a turnout today in Chicago. Reportedly the largest crowd ever assembled in the US. Impressive.
  13. I'm fine with the apology. He took ownership for having a lack of judgment and said he would make better decisions going forward. That's all he owes us.
  14. That's a fine apology and I trust there won't be another incident.
  15. So men are fair game for violence without public outrage? Good point. But here's some context on why I'm not going to rip Broxton... This is a first time incident. It happened during the offseason. It seemingly didn't endanger an innocent. That said, if you want to rip him, I'm fine with that. He does represent the Brewers every day he's under contract with the team. He is recovering from a broken wrist. He did get arrested. He was drunk and fighting. There's plenty there.
  16. Drunken fight in the middle of the night. Not a good move for an unproven guy on a roster full of younger outfielders. I'll cut him a break this time. Only this time.
  17. Absolutely! Occasionally I hear people say all is forgiven with Bartman now, forgetting the part where his life was ruined by Cubs fans. What happened to him was criminal. The mob mentality destroyed him. I'd like him to emerge from his new life and give everyone the finger while they look back in slack jawed confusion.
  18. Ok so none of my wishes have come true yet...but what if during the Cubs victory parade, Tommy Lastella gets into a shoving match with Theo? Would that provide adequate humiliation? Nah, probably not.
  19. It didn't end the way I wanted, but that was a terrific game. Maddon's misuse of Hendricks and Chapman, the Ross HR, the 2-run Wild Pitch, the Rajai Davis HR, the short rain delay to let all of it marinate for awhile. And then the game ending with a middle reliever facing an end of the bench guy. I have lived through the chesty times of the mid 80s Bears teams and the Jordan Bulls teams, and I know that Chicago fans are going to get pretty insufferable really soon. But the Cubs are the best team and a deserving champion. Let them enjoy it.
  20. Nevermind. He did. That was a great inning.
  21. Holy crap! Chapman does not have 4 outs left in him...
  22. This game is not going the way I had hoped.
  23. DVR might be a workaround for some people, but only because the games are too slow. I'm fine with important post-season games going on and on, but the regular season games are individually unimportant and need to move along faster. Baseball in the 70s and 80s had fewer strikeouts, so more action was happening on the field. There were more stolen base attempts and fewer walks. As a live spectator or tv spectator, it was so much better. Games cruised along with more onfield action in less time. Now a guy is lauded for working out a walk, but how entertaining is it?
  24. Unfortunately, by winning games 5 & 6, the Cubs have closed off most of the paths to humiliation. Unless there is a mental meltdown by a Cubs player, a loss at this point won't be humiliating.
  25. For me, they have to find a way to play games in 2:30 -2:45. I have gone to 80 games or so in the last 5 years and have seen the 9th inning in fewer than 10 of them. The postseason is different. Those games are of critical importance. But a regular season game is not.
