  1. I'm not familiar with that towel. I have not attended "towel day" before, so I'm not much help with that. But I think all of the stadium giveaway stuff has been tied in with sponsorship deals. . .like there would be a Coke logo or SuperAmerica or some other thing to identify the promotion sponsor. So my guess is that it was a retail item. . .or perhaps did they shoot that out of one of those guns, like the t-shirt cannon?
  2. I have no interest in soccer played at any level, on any surface. If my daughter was interested in playing or attending, I would go. . .but other than that, I live a very happy, soccer-free life.

New co-hosts with Karabell on Baseball Today. . .Keith Law is there Tue, Wed, Thurs. Mark Simon is there Mon & Fri. By the way, Mark's father is autograph expert Richard Simon--virtually unknown outside of the autograph hobby, but a pretty significant guy within. They didn't tap Pascarelli again, but I'm ready to give this new group a shot.
  4. I just finished "But Didn't We Have Fun" by Peter Morris. A history of baseball from the 1830s to 1870. Very interesting read and a good understanding of how the game developed from an amateur exercise by social clubs into a competitive sport, with emphasis on winning and money. And I'm just starting (again) "Satch, Dizzy and Rapid Robert" by Timothy Gay, a history of the black vs. white barnstorming games pre-Jackie Robinson.
  5. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2011/baseball/mlb/02/21/yankees.steinbrenner.ap/index.html?eref=sihp Brother Hal had sort of taken the lead, forcing this goof to the background, but you can't keep an idiot down forever. He rips the 2010 Yankees and then rips the revenue sharing/luxury tax system. What an awesome pinata.
  6. Just wait until tomorrow. . .I suspect that soreness will stick around for awhile.
  7. It was bundled with a BlueRay, and it had the best HD picture. We only have 1 tv, so I wanted to get the best one for the space in our smallish apartment. I don't remember how much the bundle cost, but it wasn't out of reach, so we went for it. My daughter might watch a 3D movie once in awhile, so while it was maybe a couple hundred more than a different one, I wasn't going to stress too much about it.
  8. I have a 3D tv that I never watch in 3D. It looks spectacular in 2D, but I'm never going to put on those glasses. If 3D is going to work for me, it will have to be presented directly on screen. Mine is the 40-inch Samsung LED that was at the top of their US product line last summer. I'm happy with it.
  9. I saw in his obit that he was also in an episode of The Munsters and The Bob Newhart Show. . .I've got to find those.
  10. Cousin Jeffrey from the Parks Department is saddened at the loss of his father, Uncle Leo. Me too. . . http://www.usatoday.com/life/people/obit/2011-02-16-len-lesser-uncle-leo-dies_N.htm
  11. I can't fault a player for getting paid when his time is right. It won't be long before Jordy Nelson turns into Antonio Freeman and his window of popularity is closed.
  12. I would guess that postcard is worth between $10 and $20. . . I love old things printed on paper, and part of that love is because they're affordable.

Per today's Baseball Today podcast on ESPN, Seth Everett is out. . .going to pursue other things. I thought he was a know-it-all and namedropper, so I'm fine with his departure. Hoping they bring Peter Pascarelli back. . .
  14. Not sure if your wife has tried Kinokuniya. . . http://www.yelp.com/biz/kinokuniya-bookstores-new-york-2 The Singapore store is loaded with Japanese & Chinese titles. The reviews of the NYC store are good, though I have not been there. . .
  15. The Pepsi Max ad with the couple on their first date was horrendous. The Doritos crumbs/dust was hilarious. I have a 6-year old daughter, so any movie ad that has people terrified is a real loser for us, anything overtly sexual is bad.
  16. I will miss seeing him peer over the webbing of his glove, cap down over his eyes in the classic Pettitte tv shot. He's not a Hall of Famer--but he had a fine career, and not many guys carry 5 championship rings.
  17. What is the book title and condition? Aaron has signed a lot during his lifetime, but there is some new respect for the older guys as they age, and his value holds up.
  18. Good post, Hoser. . . I experience similar frustrations with our own school. It seems as though they have several entities communicating stuff with parents, each in their own silo, sometimes at odds with each other, and all uncoordinated.
  19. Hmmm I guess I must not be that big a fan of Neyer, since I didn't know he was out there for free. I'll give him another read. . . The one complaint that I have about some of the Sabermetric guys (Joe Sheehan comes to mind) is the overconfidence that I sense in their writing. . .as though their research is undeniable, and that if you disagree with their premise, then you're just wrong.
  20. I used to read him all the time, but I guess I just faded away. For awhile I think he was part of the ESPN Insider stuff--maybe he was up until the end--I just never bought into that. Between Jon Heyman, Tom Verducci, Bill Madden, Joe Posnanski, the stuff on MLB.com, the Hardball Times, Yahoo. . .I just don't know how much time there is left to read. Plus I listen to the MLB Fantasy 411 podcasts, some occasional ESPN Fantasy Baseball podcasts. . .there's no shortage of material to keep me happy. Years ago I sought ought and bought the National Sports Daily newspaper, which was the best of the best. . .but it was so content loaded that I couldn't finish it--and then another one came out the next day. Still, I hope to get Neyer back into my rotation. Surprised that ESPN let him go.
  21. Perhaps. . .but I can't fault WSC for striking when the iron is hot. And they do have rent and other expenses that don't affect ebay sellers. And they would seem to offer fewer authenticity issues than you might get with an ebayer. They had Matthews in the store for a signing. I'm not here to carry WSC's water, but they did all the work to get the jersey into their hands, and can sell it for whatever someone will pay. If you want to see excessive prices, check out Steiner--but again, people don't have to pay it if they don't want to.
  22. Waukesha Sportscards has a Matthews jersey on their website for $350. The jersey is a Reebok Authentic (not a gamer, but still a good one). I don't collect football stuff (only baseball). . .but with baseball, the item being signed does play a pretty big part in the value of the final product. A sig on an authentic offical MLB ball is worth far more than one signed on a little league ball. . .
  23. My favorite MLB stadium is Coors. It was the first "luxury" stadium I had ever visited and I thought it was an awesome place to see a game--the mountain air doesn't hurt. But some of my favorite baseball watching experiences were at some of the Florida Spring Training sites. . .The Chain of Lakes park in Winter Haven was terrific, and Holman Stadiumn at Dodgertown in Vero Beach was awesome. Even the Astros park in Kissimmee was a fun place to see baseball. The smaller parks, the promise of a spring team, the casual atmosphere. . .all good times. I had a couple memorable days seeing an afternoon game in one town and then an evening game in another. Very fun.
  24. I also remember that game and was there in the cold and bad weather. I always liked going to County Stadium when it was nearly empty, and that game was terrific. We were able to walk down to the Reds' on deck circle and sit a couple of rows from the field. Add in the lack of waiting at the concession stands and in the bathrooms. . .that was a fun day for me.
  25. I've been to that club level a couple of times and really don't like it. The surroundings are nice, and the access to food and drink is fine. . .but they can't change the fact that you're fairly high up in the left field corner. I would prefer to flag down vendors for food or stand in line myself and sit in the infield.
