  1. Will Leitch nails it: http://nymag.com/daily/sports/2010/07/lebron_react_never_has_being_a.html Man, I miss him on deadspin.
  2. That is an AWESOME letter! I don't think they'll win a championship any time soon. . .but still--I love the backlash and criticism that LeBron is getting over his antics.
  3. Now they can show the replays of our 73-89 team in true high def. whee.
  4. Anyone going to Gonzaga this Sunday? I expect to be there pretty close to opening, looking to fill in my 69 Topps Football set, meet up with Greg from Gate X autographs, and to see anything vintage.
  5. Whenever I see Stephen Colbert, I wonder why all the fuss. His audience reacts like so much of his stuff is side-splitting hilarious. Once in awhile I might crack a smile, but often I just wait for the funny stuff that never comes.
  6. Generally I don't much care for these kind of one-day contract things, but the Jenkins era was such a dismal time that I think this is actually kind of cool. Despite all the losing, the guy wants to close his playing career as a Brewer. He's embracing those days while so many of us are trying to forget them. It's nice that the franchise and city mean so much to him.
  7. Where's Randall Simon when you need him? I'll use my free speech rights right now to say that Mary Kurtz is a rockhead. And her son Andrew Kurtz is a wuss for having his mom do his bidding in the press. He's 24 and should be old enough to handle an employment dispute without his overbearing, ignorant mother, Mary Kurtz sticking her big fat nose in it. If my mother were Mary Kurtz, I would beg to have a pierogi costume on 24 hours a day, just so I could escape her far-reaching, helicopter parenting. Because let's face it, it is far better to be an anonymous goof dressed as Sauerkraut Saul than to be known as Andrew Kurtz, son of Mary Kurtz.
  8. How long has the NFL been playing dumb on the issue of concussions/player lifespan? How would major sports history have changed with integrated play from the beginning?
  9. Not sure where to post this, but it's linked on The Big Lead. Former Brewer Jesse Levis is trying to bounce back after some false charges: http://www.philly.com/dailynews/sports/phillies/20100622_Former_Northeast_catcher__baseball_scout_looking_for_another_chance_after_false_charges.html#axzz0razO5FLQ
  10. The guy is at the very bottom of the organization and he starts popping off publicly about them, it shouldn't come as a shock that he's dumped on the spot. Lots of guys can fit into a costume and run around, they don't need to hold a spot for a malcontent. Maybe he'll learn from it, I just wish he didn't think of himself as a martyr.
  11. I would go with a rotation of Dance Floor by Zapp, 17 Days by Prince, Stomp! by the Brothers Johnson, Fake by Alexander O'Neal and Music by D Train. While the crowd would be underwhelmed by my baseball playing, they would at least be tapping their feet.
  12. My fantasy team also takes a huge blow. It's a steep drop off from Tulowitzki to Mike Aviles, et al.
  13. I saw the new Shrek movie today with my daughter, and I think in this one, they created the Princess Fiona character to look like Triple H. Triple H is an ogre woman.
  14. Ridgewood is quite lovely. Montclair or Upper Montclair are both fine. Paramus is good---though they have Sunday Blue Laws which force many businesses to close on Sundays. Hoboken is/was trendy. Jersey City is supposedly the new Hoboken. You'll be fine in Bergen County. . .Passaic is a little spotty. I worked in Little Falls for 3 years, and we have lived in Central NJ now three separate times, in Flemington, Hillsborough & soon Princeton. We're currently in corporate housing in Somerset, which is about an hour south of you. I don't know anything about Nyack, though I've been in White Plains a number of times, and that looks like a fun place to live.
  15. Did he get halfway through the wedding and then burn himself on the unity candle, only to be replaced by Associate Pastor Wes Obermueller? Or did he strain his wrist opening the Bible, while Deacon Tomo Ohka scrambled to find his robe? Or afterward, when posing for pictures, did the camera flash trigger some sort of seizure, forcing Pastor Sheets to cancel the rest of the weddings on his summer schedule? The "Ben Sheets odd wedding injuries" vein has comedy gold aplenty.
  16. Pay the fine, take your lumps and don't drive so fast.
  17. Our 2 1/2 years in Singapore come to an end tomorrow morning. That's totally not bugging me. Newark will never have looked so good. It's a great and wonderful place, but it's 10,000 miles away from family. The 18-hour flight might bug me, but the result is worth it.
  18. Lets all hope we can make it to 99. So many guys just cherished him. He really made a huge impact on the lives of his players and those in his circle. Rest In Peace
  19. I would put the cleat at around $50. Too bad you didn't get the other one. . .
  20. I loved the gestures and the pomposity and the humor of the guy. He was a fun guy to watch, and it's a shame that he's gone. His B-R.com bio lists him at 6'2" and 170 lb., which seems like a silly number. I can't imagine when he would have ever been 170. Unfortunately, with the bad skin, and the era that he played in and Caminiti and Bagwell and the early death, there will be whispers.
  21. This year's National Sports Collectors Convention is in Baltimore from August 4-8. I plan on attending some time during the weekend of the 7th and/or 8th, and am open to meeting up with other BF-netters-- if you promise not to buy the stuff that I want. I was at my first and only National a couple of years ago in Chicago (next year's show is also in Chicago (Rosemont)). It was awesome--tons more stuff that I could imagine, and dealers I had never met before. http://www.nsccshow.com/index.shtml
  22. Mears is weird, as they really do almost no preview, and then the auction is up, and it's over in a week. A little tough to plan ahead of time. I guess you just have to see something you like and decide quickly how much you want it. That's not tough on a $50 item. But a Wagner bat or vintage jersey, that's another thing. As for this one, I also like that Molitor jersey, but won't be participating. Just too rich for right now. A couple of those pennants look intriguing, however. . .
  23. Another near victory by the bulls, as Julio Aparicio took one to the throat. There are some horrifying pics online for those who wish to search. Freddy Krueger couldn't have dreamed of a more gruesome image. This link is safe, however. http://www.expatica.com/es/news/spanish-news/gored-spanish-bullfighter-in-intensive-care_70028.html Kind of tough to shout "Ole!" when you've got a bull's horn coming up through your neck. Despite his mini-victory, the bull was undoubtedly put to death, much to the delight of the bloodthirsty fans.
  24. Homer, I do remember that PSA, though sadly I also failed in trying to find it. But one that I did find from that era is Mr. Yuk. . . Mr. Yuk is mean. . . Mr. Yuk is green!
