  1. The book has been pulled by the publisher, apparently over fear of legal action. I hope he got an advance to write it. I actually thought this might be a year that I got back into the NBA after a 25 year absence. I think the Bill Simmons book and podcast re-kindled my interest. Plus, the NBA is pretty big in this part of Asia, and it gets a little coverage, unlike MLB.
  2. The Yount bat sold for the opening bid of $1500 plus juice. I picked up #65 the Sixto Lezcano bicentennial bat for $149. And I suspect that I overpaid for #238 the Opening Day 1970 full unused ticket at $321. One sold on Ebay in the past few weeks for about half that, but I didn't bid on it, as I was uninformed on authenticity. I'll be a little bothered if a bunch of these emerge in the coming months, but I hadn't seen a full one recently, and it's pretty much a must have for my collection of early franchise stuff. Fun auction.
  3. I was looking at that item as well. The thing that makes it tough as a collectible is the lack of evidence that Yount actually used it in a corked state. It could just as easily have been corked by someone in the past year, to try in a batting cage. Still, it's interesting. I like Mears, and am currently high bidder on a couple of pieces. We'll see if that lasts. . .
  4. That's interesting. . .Years ago we used to live in nearby Delavan and that area (Delavan, Williams Bay, Lake Geneva, Fontana) had more of a Chicago outpost feel than of one being connected to Milwaukee. License plates along the street were 50/50 at best. Maybe this will tip the balance a little more to our favor.
  5. I suspect he'll find work somewhere down the road. Probably not at MLB.com, but between the Foxes, tbs, online platforms, etc, he'll emerge after a little hiatus. Maybe 2011. I don't think anyone is claiming that he doesn't have a right to work. . .it's just that ESPN had to fire him.
  6. He's out. http://twitter.com/espnmikes/status/5160116520 ESPN fired him. . .
  7. http://assets.nydailynews.com/img/2009/10/22/amd_steve_phillips_brooke_hundley.jpg At the risk of being shallow. . . Besides being a psycho, this girl is built like Mike Scioscia. For Phillips to risk his career and his family for such an obvious mistake is so telling. After the Harold Reynolds episode, I can't see them bringing him back. Next up on Baseball Tonight, Buster Olney bops Lulu Roman. . .
  8. The Big Lead is serving us a nice morsel today about Steve Phillips and his crazy coworker/love interest. They run quite a shop over there. Sean Salisbury is smiling somewhere. . . http://thebiglead.com/?p=25263
  9. I love the baseball postseason. I'll agree that the pace of the game is often dreadfully long, but each individual game is important, so the scrutiny of each play is magnified. Just in the past few years we've had so many great moments. . .The Endy Chavez catch. The Schilling bloody sock. The Jim Leyland and Jack McKeon lead Marlins teams. The Rockies and Rays' improbable runs. Of course, the Brewers return to the postseason. . .All great stuff. Incidentally, my wedding night was the night Kirk Gibson homered off Eckersley. . .there had to be at least a few people at my wedding torqued off that they missed that wonderful moment.
  10. The only way for this to work is for you to divide and conquer. Pick one or two who you think will be chummy or at least civil and work on developing friendships with them. You'll never get all 5 to come around, but you can turn some of that witchiness against the group by getting them to squabble amongst themselves--not consistently at you. And don't make any overtures about starting a romantic relationship with anyone in that house. There is absolutely NO chance that would work out at all. Keep yourself cordial, friendly, and emotionally distant.
  11. Or maybe it will give a bad name to those who decide what gets coverage on television news. All the networks got played by this non-story, while actual real stuff was happening in the world. They got caught chasing a spectacular nothing while the kid is hiding in his own house the whole time. God forbid they get scooped by the other channels. . .chumps.
  12. I love that picture. I also don't wear hats backwards, or perched to the side, or with tags or stickers still on them, or with a flat bill. . .not because of any disrespect, but just because it looks foolish on any head, let alone my 47 year old head. And while I used to prefer the wool gamers, they don't feel as comfortable as the soft crown cotton ones. I haven't tried the newer synthetic types that the Cubs dolt is wearing.
  13. Maybe he kept it in his bag of tricks. . . That was a staple of afterschool tv on Channel 18. . .along with Lippy the Lion and Hardee Har Har, probably around 1973-75 Judge Judy and Tyra Banks got nothin' on Felix. On a side note, I've been tuning to Boomerang every once in awhile to introduce my 5-year old daughter to some classic cartoons. . .It's just astounding how many of those old cartoons were built around the concept of one character trying to kill the other one, and the prey relying on some sort of trickery to avoid a gunshot or other form of death. It seems to be the formula of all the Looney Tunes stuff.
  14. Is that a Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade balloon?
  15. I get it that all those guys need their own unique gimmick to forge their identity. . .but even at the time, those rubberbands seemed cheesy. Still, good for Lou that he made it to a normal end, while so many guys leave much younger. He was front and center for the great wrestling boom of the 80s, and was probably the unlikeliest of stars.
  16. Glad you're with me sausage racer! Supervolcano!? Bah! I could have used your support a few years ago when I stood alone and was openly mocked for saying that Chris Capuano was the Brewers ace, over Ben Sheets--a claim that I must now reluctantly agree was worth every bit of mockery I received. Cappy must have had a virus.
  17. It is my understanding that DirecTV and Tivo have resumed their partnership, with a new HD DirecTV receiver with Tivo to be released in 2010. I have had DirecTV since 2002 and have been very happy with my choice. I don't personally see much need for the Sports Package, though I usually buy MLB extra innings.
  18. http://sports.yahoo.com/mlb/news?slug=ap-astros-managersearch&prov=ap&type=lgns They dump Coop, and have plenty of ex-Brewers in the hopper. . .still 10 seems like a huge number of guys to interview. You've got to figure they're really focused on just a few.
  19. Nah. I'm sure you can be a bad person for other reasons. I dislike LaRussa mostly for how he handled his steroid users over the years. Plus the whole "smarter than everyone else" stuff, and the DUI. So him losing is just fine by me. And I think this probably hurts more for Cardinals fans than a Dodgers loss would affect their fans. So that's good. There's something wonderful about imagining the Cards fans all decked out in red, peeling off those red sweatshirts after the loss, knowing they won't get to wear them again until next April. Still, while I like Torre, I find it hard to root for Manny and Frank McCourt, so it's hard for me to get too giddy. Though if the Dodgers made it all the way to face the Yanks or Red Sox, I think I'd have to back them.
  20. I love Christmas. It's a ton of work, but well worth it for me. Just before checking back in with Brewerfan.net, I was on Amazon, ordering a bunch of Christmas CDs. Bing Crosby, Perry Como, new Bob Dylan, Chris Isaak, Ray Conniff, Andrews Sisters, Ella Fitzgerald, Andy Williams. . .a total schlockfest. It's the most wonderful time of the year.
  21. The Babe Ruth birthplace is pretty cool. They have another sports museum near Camden Yards which is good. . .though I thought it was very expensive, and it had room for a lot more stuff than they had on display (about 3 years ago). The National Aquarium is great, but when I was there, it was jammed with people, which took a little away from the experience.
  22. Snow + unraked leaves = unpleasant springtime leaf raking. FYI--The forecast for Singapore is 92 degrees with 95 percent humidity, and a 75 percent chance of an afternoon shower. And it's that way nearly every day of the year. I'll be back for some real winter December 14. . .save me some snow!
  23. Nukes in the hands of evil doers. . . Virus outbreak. Mass sterilization. Any of those would be pretty miserable.
  24. Agreed. If someone can get one of those orange t-shirts, that might make for a funny garmet to wear at the next Brewers game at Wrigley.
  25. The trailer for The Invention of Lying looks promising.
