  1. That's a great job by you, Nottso. A tremendous accomplishment, and one to be proud of. . . Keep it up!
  2. It's never happy for kids to see their family broken apart. I was in my late twenties when my parents divorced (after 30+ years of marriage), and even then, I was upset. I can't imagine what it's like for someone who experiences that while in their childhood. When children are involved, divorce is a selfish act, where parents put their own interests ahead of their kids.
  3. We can choose to give this guy the benefit of the doubt. But we don't have to. He is the one who screwed up. He is the one who is serving the suspension. And so he is the one who deserves all the ire we care to give him. I'm going to assume he's an idiot and a cheater until there is evidence to suggest he is not.
  4. To me, the ESPYs represent the point in which I stopped being interested in ESPN as a serious outlet. The self-indulgence and self-promotion of ESPN just became unbearable. I like PTI and I like watching highlights and actual sporting events, but "the Budweiser hotseat", and ESPN-developed movies? I long for the days of Charley Steiner.
  5. Agreed. Packing and shipping will be very costly with a real possibility that it could end up broken. I would look to sell your tv and buy a new one once you reach your destination.
  6. My boy (pictured) last night ran his "career" (10 innings) K/BB ratio to 22/4. He did give up his 5th hit, though, so naturally there was no dessert at dinner. Marv Marinovich would be proud of you, Jason. Maybe offer your boy a wheat germ and flax seed smoothie after he throws 200 curveballs through a tire. That'll raise him up right. Seriously, good for him on his performance. Just don't embarass him with uncontrollable weeping and trembling. . .that's not considered to be Cool Dad behavior.
  7. I would have walked away. Though in truth, I probably wouldn't have played in such a competitive league. Maybe you could bring some of your own, unfrozen balls along with next time, and insisted that they be used. I'm guessing they're in sealed boxes that could be opened in front of both teams and umpires. In any case, it's not worth risking your health and safety over some unimportant sporting event.
  8. I'm kind of skeeved out by that Groom website. It feels like you're spending about $15 for the haircut, with the rest of it as a flirting fee. I am now into Year 8 using a Wahl clipper (level zero), along with shave gel and the Fusion. Once every three weeks or so and I'm set.
  9. I don't dislike the Gordon Hinckley one for Church and Chapel Funeral Home, but I wonder why it's necessary for them to offer a disclaimer that he's not a licensed Funeral Director, but a paid spokesman. No kidding. The guy was on the radio for 100 years, and is a Hall of Fame broadcaster. And while Richard Kessler seems to have struck many nerves among the group, I don't really think he's all that bad. I don't like ads for strip clubs. Not sure if any are airing in Milwaukee, but I've heard them on sports talk radio elsewhere.
  10. Mothership. . .we're in Singapore--just back after most of June back in Wisconsin. . .Singapore schools are out of session in June and back in session in July. So my daughter learning Mandarin isn't much of an effort here. It's an English speaking country, but her school does an hour each day in Chinese. It's surprising how much they can get just be being exposed exclusively to a language, consistently every day. I checked for how to proceed on this once we get back to home. We should be here another 1 1/2 years. . .I don't know of any public schools that offer it yet--not Elmbrook, which is ours. But there is a program on Sunday afternoons at a facility in Milwaukee that might work to help make this stuff stick. It's pretty awesome to hear my 5-year old talk to taxi drivers.
  11. I have a decent autograph collection of vintage Baseball Hall of Famers. And lately I've started to focus some collecting on 1970s Brewers. Other than that, I used to DJ in the 1980s and loved it, so I've pieced together a pretty good collection of vinyl from that era. My wife takes occasional art & design classes, and my 5-year old daughter is learning to speak, read and write Mandarin. Fun.
  12. Four more gored today at Pamplona. No fatalities, but at least the bulls were trying. . . Tomorrow's another day. . .
  13. Someone was killed during the running of the bulls in Pamplona, Spain. I'm very much not bugged by that.
  14. It's certainly cool that he stayed with the family business and made it grow and become part of the American landscape. As a kid, I consumed more Oscar Mayer meat products than I'd care to admit. That stuff had/has so much sodium and fat that I'm surprised I survived. . .Olive Loaf, Pickle & Pimento Loaf, Bologna, Hard Salami, Hot Dogs, Ring Bologna. . .I don't ever remember getting lunch meat from the actual deli counter, or meat from an actual butcher. It was all that pre-packaged stuff. If I cried tears over OM3's passing, they would be salty and gelatinous.
  15. I believe one of the Oscar Mayers was part of Selig's original ownership group.
  16. I guess it's a shocker. . .but not really. It's like if you heard that Mike Tyson or John Daly died. Would it really come as a shock? In any case, he was such a major influence on music and pop culture, and was so extremely talented. And then to have such a bizarre transformation over the past 15-20 years. . .I'm with the Reverend on this one. The Michael Jackson that I remembered was gone long ago. RIP, Michael. And thanks for some terrific memories.
  17. I have not once watched an episode of Jon & Kate, so I am completely disinterested in anything having to do with either of them. I am peeved that nearly every news site online has a link to tell the latest news within the world of J & K. Just because it's on tv doesn't mean the world has to care.
  18. I agree, Unstable. I grew up here, but have spent the past 11 years living in a bunch of other places. . .we've seen a pretty fair amount of the country and there is no friendlier place than Milwaukee. And to people who have never been here, it's not really something that can be explained. Glad you enjoyed your time.
  19. My point was more the tone & arrogance with which these guys discussed & dismissed "sabermetric guys" FWIW, Joe Sheehan is never wrong about anything, and he has predicted everything, and he has stats to show how superior his stats are to other statistician's stats. He's as smug as they come. And Cory Schwartz is the most thin-skinned guy you'll ever hear. Jocks don't have a monopoly on arrogance or annoying statements. That said, if you're watching Dibble, you gotta figure he's just going to dismiss all the statistical analysis, and you hope that he'll tell you about setting up a hitter, or what a reliever does to prepare, etc. He's just not equipped to talk about guys in the farm system, or roster moves, or historical perspective, or much more than baseball card stats.
  20. Wow--They pulled it. That was the first time I ever alerted them on anything. Impressed that it works.
  21. I alerted eBay on the item. We'll see if they pull it. I don't know for sure if it is fake, or a minor league jersey. It just doesn't appear to be what his description says it is. It looks to me as though the only connection to Jerry Bell is the jersey number. He doesn't show closeups of the tags. We'll see. . .
  22. Thanks, 20fry. Not sure if cards issued in 1973 used photos from 1973 or 1972. . .But still, in a couple of 1974s, the W was just the 4 straight lines, without any extra detail. I'm guessing this isn't Jerry Bell's jersey--or at least not from during the MLB regular season. Hopefully other Brewerfan.netters will stay away. I will.
  23. Terrific. An earlier version of Google Earth! And I thought my boyhood home was built in the 1940s, and it wasn't there in 1950. . .That's got me curious now. . .
  24. I can't find any good pics of the Brewers 1973 road jerseys, but there is an ebay seller who says this is an authentic gamer from Jerry Bell. http://cgi.ebay.com/RARE-1973-MILWAUKEE-BREWERS-JERRY-BELL-GAME-WORN-JERSEY_W0QQitemZ260427840408QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item3ca2b57b98&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=65%3A12%7C66%3A2%7C39%3A1%7C72%3A1205%7C240%3A1318%7C301%3A1%7C293%3A1%7C294%3A50 I don't ever remember seeing the Brewers with a font that includes those little caps across the top of the W. I always thought they used a straight line font. It may very well be authentic, but I just don't know. . . I've sent a note to the seller, but haven't gotten a response yet. Anyone have an opinion?
  25. That's a fun item to have. Not sure it's worth more than that, nor do I think you got ripped off. Any indication of who filled it out? Was it in the Brewers dugout or Seattle's? etc. . .
