  1. The Yanks have to be furious that this became news because A-Rod's brother spoke to ESPNDeportes. That's not exactly the way most announcements reach the masses. Plus they have already banned cousin Yuri from being around the team. A-Rod is too stupid to control his family. As for the Bill Hall talk, if the Brewers can give him up just to get out of that contract, I'd be happy. A grade D prospect in return, just to make it look better.
  2. Someday I may write a book about my experiences in the grocery world. The things we see every day would blow some people's minds. I have to say, my interest is piqued. I have been a grocery shopper for 40 years, and I can't say that I've ever experienced something mindblowing. . . Is it health department kind of stuff? Cookie thieves? People going into the express checkout lane with too many items? Do tell. . .
  3. Boomer Scott did a card show signing at Gonzaga Hall last year. Very nice guy, but he's very overweight and in poor health. I'm certain that he's not working in baseball.
  4. FYI-- Fetters with the Crew had ERAs as follows: 1992 1.87 in 62.2 IP 1993 3.34 in 59.1 IP 1994 2.54 in 46 IP 1995 3.38 in 34.2 IP 1996 3.38 in 61.1 IP 1997 3.45 in 70.1 IP Admittedly, ERAs aren't the best measure of a closer, but he did snap off 6 straight years when he was under 3.50. That's good enough for a spot in my all-time bullpen.
  5. This is a great thread! My list skews old, as I established rules that the guy had to have 500 games played to be considered as a position player, which eliminates younger guys. I used the baseball-reference team data, and I'm assuming it's accurate. I wanted to combine quantity (games) and quality (OPS+, ERA+). I was most surprised by the stats on Johnny Briggs & Don Money on offense, and Doug Davis and Ray King as pitchers. 1-Paul Molitor 2B 1856 Games 125 OPS+ 2-Sixto Lezcano RF 785 Games 125 OPS+ 3-Robin Yount SS 2856 Games 115 OPS+ 4-Richie Sexson 1B 534 Games 133 OPS+ 5-Gorman Thomas CF 1102 Games 119 OPS+ 6-Don Money 3B 1196 Games 114 OPS+ 7-Johnny Briggs LF 584 Games 131 OPS+ 8-Dave Nilsson C 837 Games 110 OPS+ 9-Ted Higuera P Bench: Darrell Porter C 537 Games 105 OPS+ George Scott 1B 782 Games 131 OPS+ Jeff Cirillo IF 978 Games 113 OPS+ Mark Loretta IF 796 Games 92 OPS+ Ben Oglivie OF 1149 Games 124 OPS+ Jeromy Burnitz OF 782 Games 122 OPS+ Rotation: Teddy Higuera 205 starts 117 ERA+ Ben Sheets 221 starts 116 ERA+ Chris Bosio 163 starts 107 ERA+ Mike Caldwell 217 starts 103 ERA+ Doug Davis 111 starts 112 ERA+ Bullpen: Dan Plesac 133 saves Rollie Fingers 97 saves 149 ERA+ 259 IP 196 K Ken Sanders 61 saves 154 ERA+ 321 IP 195 K Mike Fetters 79 saves 155 ERA+ 334.1 IP 245 K Bob Wickman 79 saves 142 ERA+ 315 IP 267 K Ray King 1 save 141 ERA+ 154.2 IP 125 K King is there as a LOOGY, as the rest of the setup guys are righty.
  6. We may be doomed, but I like that there is an Australian website named "Crikey".
  7. http://www.cnn.com/2009/SHOWBIZ/02/28/paul.harvey.obit/index.html He probably means more to some of us older posters--not sure if he connected with the younger generation--but Paul Harvey was a giant in radio. It's sad to lose some of the people who seem to have always been there, and he's one of those guys.

    mlb.tv

MLB.tv offers it among their premium package offerings. The standard premium was $109, and with Insider, it was $129. The offer is on the right side of this screen. . . http://mlb.mlb.com/mlb/subscriptions/index.jsp?c_id=mlb&affiliateId=ATTRACTIONS

    mlb.tv

I'm in. This is my first year with this service, so we'll see. I've had MLB Extra Innings on Directv for several years, but I'm out of the country, and this now seems to be my best bet. My only regret is that I didn't buy the bundle of MLB.tv plus ESPN Insider. I didn't realize ESPN Insider included video of BBTN, etc.
  10. Suze Orman and her absurdly white toothy smile. Glenn Beck and his smirky mugging for the camera. Jim Cramer and his rolled up sleeves and emotional outbursts. Then in the world of sports. . . Jim Rome and his condescension. Steve Phillips and his not knowing much about baseball. ESPN Asia which insists on running F1, soccer, rugby, soccer, tennis, soccer and talk shows about soccer.
  11. This story has resurfaced today, as the feds are now looking into this matter. Jose Rijo has taken a leave of absence, and Bowden's "infractions" could go back to 1994. WOW!! That's unbelievable that he could get away with skimming money for so long. I would say this trumps anything that Alex Rodriguez has been accused of, and makes Jim Bowden a bigger crook than Junior McGee.
  12. Yes TBONE, that is correct. His cousin Yuri is the very guy that A-Rod said introduced him to "boli", that he injected from 2001-2003. Yuri stayed in the same hotel as A-Rod all of 2007, and stayed with Angel Presinal who has been banned from all MLB clubhouses for an incident in 2001 where steroids were found by Canadian airport authorities in Juan Gonzalez's bag. At the time, Presinal was working with Gonzalez, and Gonzalez said the drugs were Presinal's. So A-Rod is staying in his own room, and Yuri and Angel are staying in another room--the whole season.
  13. I'm late to the argument on this one, but I have to wonder why a high strikeout rate is considered good for a pitcher, then why isn't it considered bad for a hitter?
  14. He may have some more explaining to do . . . Today's NY Daily News is reporting that A-Rod's cousin Yuri Sucart (the one who Alex admits injected him while A-Rod was with the Rangers in 2001-2003) AND Angel Presinal stayed together in the same hotel as A-Rod throughout the 2007 season. Presinal is linked to Juan Gonzalez, is mentioned in the Mitchell report, and has been banned from every MLB clubhouse after an October 2001 incident involving Gonzalez, steroids and a gym bag. http://www.nydailynews.co...d_trainer_steroidlin.html This could get even more huge--and it's not going away. Plus, the Selena Roberts book will be out in April. Who knows what that might contain. . . AND, ESPN.com is reporting that primobolan is NOT legal in the Dominican Republic, and that it WASN"T legal in 2001-2003. http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=3920425 And in A-Rod's press conference, didn't he essentially imply that his cousin was a drug smuggler?
  15. Going into the first tournament, I was pretty ho-hum about the thing. But when I saw the national pride exhibited by the teams and fans (mostly Latin and Asian), I thought it was pretty cool. We'll see if this one brings the same enthusiasm. I would like there to be more international competition--not less. Stuff like the Pan American Games, Olympics (if they'll bring it back), and the WBC. And it would help if there was some continuity from one set of games to the next regarding the American roster. It just seems slapped together all the time, whereas the Cuban National Team is largely the same team from games to games.
  16. Thank You, FTJ. . .If I have disturbed you, then that's really saying something! One more for the Off Topic readers that's not quite as evil. . . Those lovely early thoughts of you were dancing in my head But now, can't wait to rip you in that "things that bug me" thread.
  17. The wine, the glance, two hearts collide, our hungry night of passion But now I've seen the real you, your head I must bash in. After weeks of waiting, our rendezvous, you twenty, me a teen- Hey wait a minute, aren't you that Mayor from Racine? Our love's forbidden, or so they say, I'm completely out of whack-- They mourn for you, and me, it's true. . .a necrophiliac "She's cute", they said, "a real gem", when arranging our blind date, But if you were any uglier, I'm sure you'd have a prostate.
  18. I was trying to do the Slingbox thing, and it was going okay for awhile. . . I'm in Singapore, and have a Slingbox hooked up to our internet and Directv in Wisconsin. The video quality was only okay (I have an older Sony T60 Directv Satellite receiver with Tivo, and it only offers S-Video as the best output--I didn't have a spare S-Video cable, so I used the standard single yellow video out cable from the receiver to the Slingbox). I've heard from others with Slingboxes that the video is much better using the better connections. But we're having some contractors working on our house, and they had to move all that gear around, and I lost the connection and can't connect (from 10,000 miles away). If I can't get reconnected, I won't be back until June to get everything reset. I'll address the S-Video thing then, too. I suspect that if I went with MLB.tv, things would be better for me. . .but I was enjoying the MLB Network stuff, as well as the rest of my satellite channels and recorded programs--so the Slingbox seemed like the better idea. Though I need someone a little more tech savvy than my 70-year old father-in-law to troubleshoot when I come up with problems like this. The other issue is that with MLB.tv, I wouldn't have to keep the Directv and internet services running while I'm away. ESPN-Asia is terrible.
  19. Welcome to the site. And keep your stinkin' peanuts to yourself.
  20. It seems like a promotion that was made by and for 14-year olds. And I'm not sure that I'd want my business to make it's hay from mocking people (in this case, Phelps). But. . .it's just minor league hockey, so I guess whatever fills the building.
  21. Wow. . .strange to see a thread I started a year ago emerge again. We're still on Skype. Still a big fan. We use the conference call feature fairly often, and it works well. I also have Skype calls forwarded to a mobile phone, so when I don't pick up on the computer, it will ring through to a cell--even if I'm not online. I have a mobile phone that I use in Asia, and a different phone that I use in the US, and that call forwarding feature can be used to ring either phone (whichever one I choose). I don't have a landline phone anymore, and can't really see the need for one.
  22. In 2008, the Cubs lead the NL in runs scored with Alfonso Soriano hitting leadoff (.344 OBP). The Rangers lead the AL in runs with Ian Kinsler (.375 OBP) most often hitting leadoff. In 2007, Johnny Damon hit leadoff for the Yanks (league leaders in runs), and his OBP was .351. In the NL, the Phillies lead the league in runs, and Jimmy Rollins was their leadoff hitter (.344 OBP). So based on these 4 teams--all league leaders--I would say that the leadoff hitter's OBP isn't all that important. Or probably better said, it's possible to score a lot of runs even if your leadoff hitter isn't near the top of the league's OBP leaderboard.
  23. baseball is the most crooked of the professional sports Hardly. The NFL will continually do whatever it can to try to hide the fact that its players often leave the game crippled, and live shortened, painful lives. It's a meat grinder and its players are the meat.
  24. Mantle admitted he needed greenies to take the field after his frequent hangovers. John Milner said he got amphetamines from Willie Mays's locker. "At the mention of greenies, Washington Nationals manager Frank Robinson, a Hall of Fame player who is among the most astute observers of the game, tightened his lips in a half-smile and drew his thumb and forefinger together across them as if to keep his lips zipped." ergogenics.org In the amphetamine era, since drugs were left out in the open for all to use like the post-game meal, it seems sensible to presume players guilty until proven innocent. Great response! Rightly or wrongly (probably wrongly), I look at amphetamines differently than I look at steroids, HGH or other agents that are associated with building muscle.
  25. there is no way to even know if your 'old time' greats were clean or not. While that is true, it's also true that in all the years since then, not one clubhouse guy or gym rat or personal trainer or drug dealer or down-on-his-luck ex-athlete has ever come forward to name Aaron or Mantle or Frank Robinson, etc. Not One. And so while we may look back at history and have doubts on every single athlete, it's hardly the same as the doubts we have on modern athletes who have been named, and against whom there is evidence.
