  1. I don't know if he'll get to the Brewers in the waiver line. Also, if he pitches 30 more games (possible), his $4M option for next year vests. Which is no good. There are only 53 games left. I think they could find a way to not throw him in 24 of these games.
  2. I don't think it matters if a player within the organization is on the major league 25-man roster on August 31 - even minor leaguers on 8/31 can play in the postseason.
  3. Yuni's OPS is only .041 below and defensive WAR is higher than a player who was voted as being just as good as Babe Ruth.
  4. Recent retirees*:Ray DurhamMark GrudzielanekDavid EcksteinCristian GuzmanLuis CastilloRonnie BelliardBrendan HarrisKaz MatsuiKhalil Greene * or guys buried in the minors
  5. First weekend of October:1. Brewers playoff games2. Badgers / Nebraska in a night game at Camp Randall3. Packers / Broncos at Lambeau4. More Brewers playoff games
  6. Nyjer should start every game. This should not be close to a platoon situation.
  7. The 8th and 9th inning plans are now obvious: combination of Rodriguez and Axford. Prior to the 6th inning, the plan is also obvious: Marco Estrada, who has been effective in that role. With the K-Rod trade, the uncertainty has shifted to the middle innings. Observing games and reviewing stats and splits, the roles in the 6th and 7th innings are nearly as obvious. Over the last several seasons, Hawkins has been much more effective against lefty hitters than righty. He doesn't need to be solely a LOOGY, but if there is a middle inning featuring two out of three lefty hitters, then he's your guy. Loe only starts innings and only pitches if two of the next three hitters are righties, and he never faces a left-handed power hitter. If Saito is rested, he takes one of these innings, especially if righties are due at bat. Dillard only pitches in high-leverage situations if other guys have been over-used. If you need an extra out or two in the 7th inning in a high-leverage situation, then bring in K-Rod a little early. Get through a tough 7th and it impacts the opposing team's choice in relief pitcher: the Brewers would be more likely to extend the lead following a successful 7th than following a 7th where they gave up the lead. Extend the lead and you may not even need K-Rod or Axford for 4 or more outs. This plan seems fairly obvious, but it seems like Roenicke isn't even close to figuring this out yet.
  8. RR has got to recognize his weakness and simply defer all pitching change decisions to someone else. He couldn't be any worse at it if he tried. Maybe Melvin can hire a guy simply for this purpose. In the NFL some head coaches call plays and some defer it to someone else. This needs to happen here.
  9. More comfort comes from the Mets' forums, where their fans say that moving K-Rod was one fire sale move that was understandable. They don't endorse getting rid of Reyes, Wright, or Beltran; but they do endorse getting rid of a closer that could possibly demand a lot of cash that the Mets don't currently have. Nothing on their forums say that he's damaged goods.
  10. The Brewers fans deserve credit, too. Three millions fans allows this to happen. The Reds and Pirates couldn't afford to do this.
  11. Total cost to the Brewers: $5 Million minus the cash received. He will undoubtedly be a setup guy because (a) Axford is entrenched and (b) K-Rod gets $17 Million in 2012 if he finishes 55 games in 2011. The Brewers won't let this happen, and K-Rod has got to know that nobody would let this happen so he should just enjoy the ride.
  12. They're paying K-Rod most of his contract. That's most of what the Mets are "getting".
  13. Leads league in OPS by a wide margin. Probably eventually trade bait since he's blocked for the next 10 years, unless he learns to play first base.
  14. Surhoff's game-winning bunt basehit vs. the Yankees in '87 Tom Brunansky's game-winning HR vs. the Twins in '88 or '89Surhoff's game-winning grand slam the 2nd game of the season in '90 - probably the most berserk I've heard Uecker go.Gantner's game-winning home run in '92 in the first game of a doubleheader - Ueck called Gantner "Babe" the entire 2nd game.Eddie Perez's walkoff homer in the early 2000's
  15. Marco has one of the most unsung roles on the team - one that's often taken for granted. Recently, he's been doing his job very well and last night he was a key contributor to the team's win. Estrada has pitched 5 2/3 hitless innings this month, at a time when nobody else (save Axford) can seemingly get anyone out. Even though he was originally stretched out for starts and long relief, he has adapted well to pitching on short rest, with frequent very short starts by starters and high scoring games recently. It looks like Melvin made a good choice in keeping Estrada and getting rid of Mitre and Dillard. The non-high-leverage-situation pitcher isn't associated with much glory, but Estrada has been as important as anyone else in keeping this team afloat during the recent rough stretch.
  16. If Melvin fired Yost in mid September of a playoff run, there's no reason to think he won't make a drastic move if things keep spiraling downward this homestand.
  17. It's ironic that Gamel formerly played outfield and third base and was moved to give Jim a better shot at playing time - and now there are gaping holes at those two positions, while he's blocked at his new position. I can't imagine that he forgot how to catch a fly ball, though.
  18. What's key is whether it's Grade 1 or Grade 2. Grade 1 is Derek Jeter - miss two weeks (he played a AA game tonight) Grade 2 is Jimmy Rollins last year - missed over a month and it hampered his production all season. Be prepared for a whole bunch of Kotsay and/or Gomez.
  19. Please, someone paraphrase his post-game interview from tonight's Minnesota game.
  20. Reminds me of Bill Hall's game winner at Detroit in 2007. Team was dead and then suddenly had new life. Hopefully this will continue into tomorrow.
  21. Saw many Brewer fans at the game today - my guess is 2,000+. Unfortunately there was absolutely nothing to make noise about, besides two almost HR's from Fielder.
  22. 2011 vs. 2009 (the previous season where Gamel had an extended call up) - in 2011 Gamel has more AAA at bats and about half the strikeouts as he did in '09. Hopefully this translates to more contact at the MLB level.
