  1. Wise was one my top 5 list of guys least likely to be on PED's.
  2. I just read an ESPN The Magazine story about the Lakers and Celtics making moves that make no basketball sense at the trade deadline just to save a million dollars or so. These are the top two money makers in the NBA experiencing financial concerns. I wouldn't be surprised if all 30 MLB teams end up being in major cost-cutting mode very soon if they aren't already. The luxury boxes and sponsorship deals will be the first sources of lost revenue. If a team stinks, their attendance could plummet. The Brewers picked a very good time to be peaking in terms of fan interest, and if they get off to a good start this year, they could easily pick up some players for a fraction of the cost (in terms of prospects that need to be traded) than in previous years if they're willing to take on a little salary.
  3. ESPN had a report that some franchises would have to dump salary mid-season because they won't have the cash flow to pay salaries. I made up this list sorted from most likely to least likely to have these problems, based on revenue, payroll as % of revenue, attendance (and likelihood of drop), regional economic problems, and recent earnings. I had Milwaukee on the bottom 10 of this list, meaning in 2009 they're the 10th most financially stable franchise. If my list is correct, then look for guys like Gary Sheffield, Magglio Ordonez, Carlos Guillen, BJ Ryan, Scott Rolen, and Ichiro to be available soon. Detroit Toronto Seattle Cleveland Kansas City Baltimore Arizona Florida Pittsburgh Cincinnati Texas Chicago Sox Oakland Tampa Bay San Diego Washington Houston Minnesota Colorado Atlanta Milwaukee Philadelphia NY Mets San Francisco NY Yankees Chicago Cubs St. Louis LA Angels LA Dodgers Boston
  4. If this blows up in Boras's face, does Prince fire him? Not likely, but a pleasant thought.
  5. It feels like the worst idea in the world before it happens, but when the games were on, I had a hard time turning away from it in '06. As much of a hit as the guy has taken over the past couple of years, Roger Clemens in a USA uniform just felt right. He may have been a cheater, but you really believed that it meant everything to him to play for his country. If the USA team comes across that way in '09, then it will probably be intriguing. If it looks like the USA is treating it like highly attended exhibition games, then I may catch a couple of Dominican Republic games (their lineup is unbelievable) and then wait for the real season.
  6. We almost won the World Series with a 250-pound center fielder. How cool is that!
  7. The harder they try to simulate a Super Bowl-type setting, the more they'll fail. They need to not change anything, except tweaking some game times (maybe make the odd-numbered games East Coast friendly and even-numbered games West Coast friendly), and let the game be the main event - not hype, concerts, commercials, and wardrobe malfunctions.
  8. The Rays are now 2/3 of the way towards an all-Gabe outfield. Congrats.
  9. That actually is Jeter. He's been spending the winter with Clemens' and Pettitte's "trainer".
  10. That actually is Jeter. He's been spending the winter with Clemens' and Pettitte's "trainer".
  11. It makes me sick hearing Yankee fan and media blowhards who see CC as a guy "just like A-Rod" who chokes at the end of the season. Memo to Yankee blowhards: Fine, you feel that way? o.k. Jeff Suppan has a pretty decent post-season record. If you feel so strongly about CC being a choker, then make this trade: CC + $136 million to the Brewers for Suppan. According to your argument, you'll be better off, right? How can what CC did the last half of the year not remove this undeserved stigma? I don't see Yankee legend Andy Pettitte throwing complete games on 3-days rest to carry his team into the playoffs. If CC gives up a few runs on opening day and gets booed, I'd like to see him stand on the mound and give these buffoonerous "fans" the finger.
  12. Regarding his ERA, the division and league he pitched in, along with the fact he pitched his entire career during the steroid era, makes his ERA hall-of-fame quality.
  13. Does that mean the Cubs will lose 297 games next year???
  14. I'm worried that if we kept screwing with him by moving him to a different position every year, then he'd end up being another Bill Hall. Stay in left field, hit 40 HR's and drive in 120 RBI's, and worry about the other 7 positions.
  15. I put in a vote for a place on a wall or facade saying "Postseason - 1981, 1982, and then unveil 2008 on opening day.
  16. 1. Braun being healthy and putting up even better numbers than the gaudy ones he put up in '06 and '07. 2. Weeks starting off like he finished in '07. 3. A healthy Gallardo starting the season off strong and making us forget for a time about losing Sheets (but not CC). 4. McClung taking advantage of his opportunity and posting a sub-4.00 ERA to shore up one of the rotation spots. 5. At least 3 of the late-season callups making the roster and playing key bench/bullpen roles - which frees up the money to be spent elsewhere.
  17. These people have been granted vacation time and have all the time in the world available to spend 12pm CT Sunday in front of the tube: Lou Pinella Carlos Zambrano Alfonso Soriano The Cubs' mighty pitching staff All those Cubs fans who brought brooms to Miller Park in July the Mets - who swept us painfully in September Tony LaRussa Albert Pujols A-Rod Derek Jeter Mariano Rivera Hank Steinbrenner (and Hank, we've won more games than the Yankees have so it doesn't matter what division we're in) Bobby Cox Halliday and Burnett, Morneau and Mauer, Verlander and Bonderman, Berkman and Oswalt. With all of this team's faults, it's amazing that we're still around while this mix of legends, media darlings, thorns in our side, and unbelievably talented players are not.
  18. Under normal conditions, the Phillies would have a very good chance of teeing off on Suppan. I like the fact that we have that neutralizer on Sunday. With the Phillies being frustrated by not being able to read Suppan's offspeed stuff added on to the fact that they're going to feel all the pressure in the world to not be faced with game 5 against a fully rested CC, it's looking good.
  19. I'm o.k. with the Sveum lineup, except, with Hart's struggles, having Hardy and Hart bat back-to-back just isn't working. It seems like a righty's strategy is to work around Fielder, then throw a bunch of outside sliders to Hardy and Hart. Perhaps sticking a perceived patient, contact hitter between Hardy and Hart would give the pitcher something to think about.
  20. I honestly believe a 10-year old could have made the play Hall had to make, a 7-year old could have made the play Weeks had to make, and an average major leaguer could have made the play Cameron had to make. This is the fuc#in' playoffs, man. Step your game up.
  21. Can't even catch a fuc#in' ball. Unbelievable.
  22. Not a pic, but a celebratory song: Brewers, Brewers, Keep Turnin' up the heat!
  23. If you're like me and had the Extra Innings game feed end right after the last out, a few people put tidbits of the post-game celebration on YouTube. Just search "Brewers" and sort by date. Also, try your best to AVOID the videos of people peeing their pants.
  24. I'll remember his 1-0 complete game shutout over Jake Peavy as a key to the team's run.
  25. Man, I am SOOOOO happy for that guy. He dedicated the last 15 years of his life to helping the franchise get to this spot. In the mid '90's - the real dark ages of this franchise - he was the only respected person associated with the Brewers. Just about any other individual would have bailed out, but Ueck stuck around through the dark ages just because it was good and necessary for the outlook of baseball in Milwaukee. Miller Park absolutely does not get built if Uecker's goodwill was not figured into the equation. Ueck has as much to do with this incredible accomplishment as anyone. Way to go - I can't wait to hear the call on sportsbubbler.
