  1. He's been compared to Rickey Henderson and Gary Sheffield re: potential and style. His biggest strength is his quick bat, and his multiple wrist injuries may have impacted this quickness and partly explain his low batting average and low power numbers this year. When healthy, he has been an effective leadoff man who has led the league in runs scored over long stretches of his healthy seasons. Gary Sheffield had a season early in his career where he hit around .190, and then the next year he came close to the triple crown. If Weeks can become a little more disciplined at the plate, then he could conceivably have this type of turnaround. It is WAY too early to give up on Weeks becoming a high-impact player.
  2. Eric Gagne blows 3-run lead in the 8th. Past performance does not guarantee future returns.
  3. Would it make sense to give Villanueva a shot at the rotation and put Vargas in the bullpen? A lights-out Villanueva is too big of an asset in the bullpen to shift. However, the recent Villanueva is struggling - probably because of pitching too frequently. If he gets into a once-per-5-days routine, he'd probably be a lot better than Vargas and would help save the rest of the bullpen.
  4. The only mismanagement was in the 9th inning. If Suppan gave up a three-run bomb in the 6th, Yost would have been criticized for leaving him in there too long. Regarding the 9th, I don't like putting Wise in a situation to "work out his problems" with a lead in the 9th inning. That was not the correct situation in which to put Wise in. I would have either used Turnbow or left Linebrink in there. Coco coming off consecutive days of saves in tough one-run games is not going to work anymore. Yost needs to let Turnbow or Linebrink or somebody else be the "2nd closer" (like Francona has done with Okajima in Boston).
  5. Candidates include Zach Jack and Aquino. I wouldn't mind seeing RA Dickey get a chance (would probably need to DFA Dillon). It's obvious that they need someone because (a) it's Colorado and (b) the collective arm of the bullpen is shot right now.
  6. I'm having a hard time coming up with a realistic one. The bullpen is completely shot. Their confidence is probably shot. We'll probably score some runs, but besides Vargas and Capuano pitching complete games (where it's much more likely that they'll struggle to get to the 6th), I just can't see how they're going to avoid a couple of lopsided losses.
  7. I guess the SI cover jink doesn't apply to ESPN mag. http://static.yuku.com/v2//domainskins/bypass/img/smileys/happy.gif
  8. Losing several heart-wrenching games and also losing your ace is supposed to make a very young team wilt under the pressure and fall out of the playoff race. This team has responded to each of Cordero's meltdowns by winning the following game. They have responded to the loss of Sheets by having their best string of starting pitching of the season. Losing games late is tough, but each time the Brewers respond favorably, the more likely that they're not going wilt under the pressure in August through October. After what this team has gone through the past several weeks, I don't consider this to be an inexperienced team anymore.
  9. Balfour for Julio Franco, and then we'll immediately go from having the youngest infield in the league to the oldest.
  10. Pat Listach? http://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/wink.gif
  11. With last week's rumored Dunn trade and now the Linebrink trade, it seems like Melvin is trying to block guys from going to the Cubs as much as picking up guys to help his team. About the worst news Brewer fans could hear right now (besides Suppan or Balfour taking the mound) is the Cubs picking up a big-time left-handed bat or bullpen help. The Brewers didn't necessarily need Linebrink, but they definitely needed him to not be on the Cubs.
  12. A: Verlandered. Q: What happened to us today, in one word?
  13. Mark Brunell sprained his finger in December of 2002. He had a bad game the next week, and then had a 3 TD / 0 INT game the following week. Marcus Giles sprained a finger on April 18, 2006. He missed 6 days, and then came back and had hits in each of his next 3 games on his way to a 550 at-bat season with no other lengthy absences. Jim Thome sprained a finger on May 18, 2004. He missed 7 days, and then game back and had 3 doubles in the next 2 games on the way to a 612 plate appearance season with 42 homers. Khalil Greene sprained a finger in late 2006, attempted to return on two occasions, but did not have a hit the rest of the season. This year he has 16 home runs and seems to be fully recovered. Joel Zumaya sprained a finger in early May 2007 and expects to return to action in August. As has been discussed before, there is a wide range of outcomes from this injury. Based on today's news, Sheets' injury appears less severe than Zumaya's. I doubt that he'll be back next week (like Brunell, Giles, and Thome were) mainly because he is a pitcher, but 2+ weeks sounds about right at this point.
  14. Does anyone know if Zumaya's injury is the same as Sheets'? It seems like Zumaya has been out for a while.
  15. Can we just have The Tennessean be the official beat reporter for the Brewers instead of the Journal Sentinel?
  16. Games like today's and yesterday's make you realize that things really do even out in baseball. Those early-season losses against the Phils (Turnbow's meltdown), Rangers (Coco's 4-run 9th with 2 outs), and Cubs (A-Ram's walkoff) don't seem as painful when the Brewers are somewhat able to turn the tables and win tight games.
  17. Here's one measure: the 3 youngest players to attain their 3,000th hit are Ty Cobb, Hank Aaron, and Robin Yount.
  18. Exactly - How are Gallardo and Villanueva supposed to bridge their number of innings up from last year to next year by only throwing a few innings a week? A planned 4- or 5-inning outing every 5 days would get you there. This would also put Gallardo in position to be a starter again in late September if we need him.
  19. Day 1: Suppan pitches 4 innings and Villanueva throws the next 5. Day 2: Vargas pitches 5 innings, Wise goes 2, Turnbow and Coco wrap it up. Day 3: Capuano pitches 5 innings and Gallardo throws the next 4. Day 4: Bush pitches 7 innings, Turnbow and Coco wrap it up. Day 5: Sheets pitches 8 innings and Coco wraps it up. Would we ever lose? How many of the past 6 games would have had different results if they went with this plan? The big negatives are: it would limit our ability to pinch hit in close games (but Gallardo is probably a better hitter than anyone else we would send up there) and we'd be paying $10 million to a 4-inning pitcher.
  20. JD Drew has 4 at bats tonight ... in 3 innings! Why couldn't the Brewers be facing the Devil Rays this week instead of the powerhouse Pirates and Nationals?
  21. For a team that supposedly has great depth in its rotation, I'm downright frightened every time a guy beside Sheets starts a game. Suppan is struggling big-time, Capuano has lost 5 in a row, Bush is average at best this year. Is Vargas our #2 with Villanueva and Gallardo out of the rotation? He has a hard time getting through the 6th inning. Something needs to change in this area for this team to continue to be the team to beat in the 2nd half.
  22. Or how about Braun's 1.755 OPS vs. lefties this year.
  23. How about Braun beginning his career with a 1.035 OPS. Who the hell does he think he is? Albert Pujols?
  24. Can you imagine how low the TV ratings would be for Game 1 in a best-of-9 World Series?
  25. For the other young guys on the Brewers, it's fairly easy to find a recent player with a comparable skill set (Ryan Braun / David Wright, Prince Fielder / Ryan Howard, etc.) For Hart, I have to go back a ways. It's rare to find a guy over 6' 3" with that combination of power, speed, and ability. The last one I can remember is Eric Davis.
