  1. 2010 was right at the beginning of the rise of advanced analytics in football. Brian Burke had his own website back then (he works for ESPN now) and I believe he had the Packers as top 5 defense and I think the best passing offense. His model had them winning it all going into the playoffs. I was a little off....Defense was 6th, offense was 4th (passing offense was 3rd) http://archive.advancedfootballanalytics.com/2011/01/2010-team-efficiency-rankings-final.html
  2. Content aside, that was a really well written article.
  3. Side story....I read an article about a 40 year old guy in Cleveland who owned his own car repair shop. He decided he needed to learn more about running a business so he went back to school to get his degree. One of his required classes was a biology class which he pushed off until the end because he thought it was useless and he wasn't really into science. But he had to take it to graduate and ended up loving it. In fact, he loved it and his teacher so much that he ended up going to medical school after graduating from college. He's now a 47 year old resident. Crazy inspiring story and also shows how a well-rounded education can open up eyes to career paths you didn't think were attainable or within your skillset. https://www.cleveland.com/tipoff/2019/07/car-mechanic-shifts-gears-becomes-a-doctor-at-age-47-and-helps-address-shortage-of-black-doctors.html
  4. Re: Trade schools I'd be curious to know how many industrial arts programs in WI high schools have been cut. Most kids don't even know it's an option as they literally have been "directed" to go to college for several decades.
  5. I can definitively tell you that this was NOT the emphasis when I was in high school something like 15 years ago. It was "be what you want to be", which is how you end up with so many psychology and liberal arts majors. It was also a 100% college or bust mentality. There was never any push to look into becoming an electrician or welder or carpenter or anything like that. A bit refreshing to see that's being pushed a bit more. I don't think there's anything inherently wrong with simply pursuing knowledge and getting a philosophy or liberal arts degree. The issue is that no one thinks those skills translate when I bet any liberal arts degree holder can learn what a marketing major needs to know in about two months on the job.
  6. Yes, I agree that the type of degree vs amount of debt matters. You can't go to Lawrence for undergrad, accrue $150K of debt and then become a social worker. I mean you CAN but there are probably better places to get the degree for that sort of thing.
  7. Ok boomer. Disclaimer: I graduated 10 years ago, and until recent years, costs continued to skyrocket after my graduation. My point isn't to say that ANYBODY can get a college degree without taking on crippling debt. I do think that the vast majority can, though. But 26K, while not cripling, is a ton of debt. I graduated from UW in 1996 with $2300 in debt and that was without hardly any parental help. Like I posted earlier if tuition simply rose with inflation a semester at Madison would be like $2150 now. It's $5350. I do think a lot of people get degrees that should probably be going to tech school. The trades are in dire need of new blood. Heck the ironworkers union here in Illinois will pay you $22 an hour to go to school to become an ironworker.
  8. I like that it's a St. Louis guy reporting this. Let the conspiracy theories commence!
  9. So the Niners lose in OT...but they had the ball late in OT and could have run it three times and taken the tie. Instead they threw three incompletions and punted. Seattle goes down and kicks winning field goal. Might have cost them the division. Good for Packers.
  10. "Cheap" is relative obviously and compared to schools of similar standing, UW is less expensive. Back in the day when tuition was about $1200 a semester, you could get out of school with hardly any debt at all with a summer job and maybe working part-time during school. Had tuition simply matched inflation the last 30 years you'd be looking at like $2130 a semester instead of the $5350 or whatever it is this year. I don't claim to know all the reasons why it's so much more expensive but to me it used to be very affordable and now it isn't given that wages have not risen at the same rate as tuition.
  11. Well you couldn't put it at the first down unless the whole field was rigged. We are just talking about the goal line. And obviously you still need refs for the subjective calls like PI, holding, etc. etc.
  12. Yep. Anything subjective should not be reviewable. I'd limit it to just scoring plays or plays inside two min warning but that's just me. You'd think they could put some kind of sensor in the ground and in/on the ball.
  13. I think you are confusing people being ok with replay and people being ok with waiting two minutes to know the outcome of the game.
  14. LOCKED BECAUSE I CAN!!!!! Other thread is back open.
  15. Good discussion so far. Let's make sure to steer clear of politics.
  16. At the end of the day, the Panthers ran out of time so forcing them to go the length of the field worked. I think most games I would go for it though given our defense's propensity to give up yards and big plays.
  17. When the discussion veered into subsidizing student loans and then political campaign strategy around what to do about education it got way off topic and political. Yes it was a good conversation but as we've mentioned before it doesn't have to be argumentative to be locked. I suppose I could have just deleted the posts but sometimes we see stuff and don't have time to make a bunch of edits or add a comment. I should have gone back and added a post after the fact. My mistake. I just forgot about it. If I have time over lunch I'll see about re-opening it.
  18. I would have been totally ok going for it on 4th down as I was before the half. I was also ok punting in that situation given what OSS described above.
  19. Their line play has been really bad.
  20. Honestly feel pretty good about that W. Packers didn't play all that great and still beat a decent team. Absolutely have to clean up those pre-snap penalties. Just killers. And I didn't really like the offensive game plan. Rodgers seems to be falling into that "wait on the deep guy" mindset again.
  21. Looks like New Orleans is going to lose to Atlanta at home. Any given Sunday.... Helps Packers.
  22. Lamar Jackson is ridiculous.
  23. I went to U of M for a year and transferred to UW. So my hatred is personal.
  24. My skin is thick enough I can handle another beat down from OSU if it comes to it. I'll never root for Minnesota to win anything.
