  1. It's going to be doubly depressing when he's throwing gems for the Cards, Cubs or Reds down the stretch. Well if it's for the Reds then the Derek Johnson thread will definitely rise from the ashes.
  2. Yep ... joining the Athletic Good move by The Athletic. I bet Bob got exactly the terms he wanted.
  3. His defense is bad but he's still at +2.2 WAR in 66 games. That's 14th best 2B in all of baseball in only 66 games. He's probably top five if he plays all year. Also, as bad as he is he's still like twice as good as Weeks was his rookie year. That says more about Weeks than Hiura I guess
  4. Teams place just way too much value on draft picks. The Packers could have had Moss and Tony G when they were the best in the league at their positions for a 3rd and 4th round pick. Draft picks in the NFL are valued like elite prospects in baseball. Even late round picks have a ridiculous amount of value. I'd love to hear what players the Packers have been targeting in trade talks. Given the salary structure of the NFL, and the money committed to most Quarterbacks, I understand why. There is good reason just a handful of teams other than New England have won a Super Bowl with a QB on a mega-deal since the 1993 labor agreement (off top of my head - Giants in 2012, Saints in 2010, Steelers in 2009 - there might be one or two others).
  5. The Cubs had to tank four years to get where they are. They drafted top ten guys four years in a row. Brewers were in the top ten twice. Plus the Cubs have money to burn for guys like Soler, Lester, Heyward. Hard to compare the two rebuilds but I agree that the jury is out on if Stearns can keep the team competitive over a long stretch of time. Methinks he can with a few shrewd signings in the offseason. Yelich, Hiura, and Grisham are a nice core to build around. There is a lot of depth in the pitching even if there aren't one or two true studs in the group.
  6. Luck stayed in school an extra year when he easily would have been the #1 pick in the draft. I don't think he gives two rips about money...or at least he knows he has enough to be happy. Also, I think he made mention that it's the mental side taking a bigger toll than the physical. Hope he's doing ok.
  7. I don't think you can declare anything about this trade until Zavolas makes the majors.
  8. That is what most Yost haters did argue. But couldn't the same be said of every manager on every team? Yost refuses to put guys in when leverage matters. Greg Holland never pitched outside the 9th inning except one or two times. Wade Davis never pitched outside the 8th inning unless Holland was hurt or unavailable. He says "You are my 9th inning guy, I can't use you when there are two outs in the 8th even though it's a favorable matchup"
  9. Apparently, the Astros have a long history of this kind of thing:
  10. You still need road capacity to fit all the cars. Autonomous cars won't help with that. Same for parking. Commute times will probably dip at first and then go back up. Plus I think a lot of people like being near amenities and not having to rely on a car.
  11. I think Davis showed he is much better than 3rd stringers....which means he's 2nd string at least which means he should make the team.
  12. 5 - 7 is worst case possible, IMO.
  13. op·ti·mism /ˈäptəˌmizəm/ noun 1. hopefulness and confidence about the future or the successful outcome of something. "the talks had been amicable and there were grounds for optimism" synonyms: hopefulness, hope, confidence, buoyancy, cheer, good cheer, cheerfulness,
  14. His "effort" was having his agent call once on Wednesday around noon and leaving a voicemail. How is the Detroit paper supposed to send another reporter to an away game 8 hours before it starts? Then the agent called again on Thursday...which was the day after the whole episode.
  15. That was my thought....how was this not identified a week, a month, six months ago?
  16. Wonder if he's an AFL candidate?
  17. I never wanted him fired and felt somewhat vindicated by what he did with KC. His bullpen management was a major issue most had with him here yet that was the biggest strength of those World Series teams. Now we have a thread that starts out by saying he didn't like Counsell at first and made up his mind a couple years ago that he wasn't the right man for the job. One of his first complaints is the bullpen management. What do these two managers have in common? They both had deep playoff runs by leaning heavily on a great bullpen. I say lets fire him now and watch him win a World Series for Seattle by relying on the bullpen. It's the Brewer way. I still don't think Ned was a good manager. Good Ra Ra guy but bad in-game strategist. You could make the argument that anyone could have managed the Royals bullpen in 14 - 15 and looked smart regardless of role.
  18. Technically I don't think the Astros can do that. Verlander can choose not to answer the guy's questions but Astros can't block him from entering the room.
  19. I'm sure many people that wanted Ned Yost fired now think he's a great manager for participating in two world series and winning one.
  20. OK everyone...time to move on.
  21. The Brewers won yesterday, therefore, I think he his a good manager. My opinion is subject to change pending the results of the next game.
  22. Don't look now but Phil Bickford is knocking on the door of becoming a prospect again. He's 24 and in A+ obviously so he'd need to get moving but his last 25 IP have been ridiculous: 25.1IP 40K 7BB 1.42 ERA
  23. I wonder how many people throw out their arms within three hours of the plane landing? That would be me for sure.
