  1. Was Dennis Eckersley always a side-arm pitcher? I don't remember, but he was a starter into the late 80s.
  2. I saw the thread title and assumed it was about Michael Barrett. I can't be the only one.
  3. I guess you could argue that it makes some sense as far as moving depth around, now that we know we're keeping Kurt Thomas. But I saw Warrick as more of a SF anyway, and I was pretty excited about Johnson. Weems...well, if his twitter is any indication, he has to be the least interesting man in the world. For that reason alone, I could have seen myself rooting for him (and he probably would have begged me to come over and watch Matlock). That should leave us with: C: Bogut/Thomas/Gadz/Elson PF: Ilyasova/Thomas/Warrick/Alexander SF: Moute/Warrick/Alexander/Delfino SG: Redd/Meeks/Bell/Delfino PG: Jennnings/Ridnour/Ukic so I guess we traded a potential starting PF for 3rd and 4th string guards. I guess it probably won't make that much difference. Bogut must have been playing Deputy GM here, and just wanted his buddy Ukic in.
  4. Still only a bunch of talk from his agent. If either team were really interested, they would have signed him weeks ago IMO.
  5. Todd Coffey's last start was in single-A back in 2002. I'm not completely opposed to converting relievers into starters, but the success rate is very low.
  6. Yeah. I don't understand why JJ Hardy is exempt from getting sent down due to poor performance, and why he should automatically be entitled to a roster spot no matter what. Every other baseball player needs to perform in order to stay in the majors, so why not Hardy? If other players get sent down to the minors for a significant period of time, they will have the same service time issues. The Brewers aren't picking on him or being unfair, that's just the way it works.
  7. I think that whoever had "Mike Rivera calls a good game" in their sig might be on to something.
  8. Were the Brewers sticking it to Ryan Braun by waiting a month or two before calling him up in his rookie season? Its really the same thing, just being done a bit later. If anything, Hardy gets the better end of the deal since he'll end up with another arbitration year instead of another league minimum year. This happens all the time, and every team does it.
  9. I know a lot of people here aren't big fans of base stealing, but this is a good point. Escobar's wOBA (sort of like a weighted OPS, but takes base stealing into consideration) the past two seasons have been higher than Hardy's career, even though Hardy's OPS has been better.
  10. To be fair, even if the staff was only expected to be average, they still fell way short of that.
  11. They put ketchup on it http://derivataters.com/emot-psyduck.gif
  12. I wouldn't think so either, but his comments about how last night's game "put [him] over the edge" and that he "maybe waited too long on some of these" make me wonder. Maybe Melvin isn't really as laid back and patient as we were led to believe earlier in his Brewer career, possibly because there's more at stake now? Could also be that he's under pressure himself, of course.
  13. McCalvy has a new blog up, JJ says he's really excited about getting a few days off and thinks that he really needed a rest. Then he made a golf analogy. http://brewersbeat.mlblog...hardy_felt_demotion.html
  14. I agree, but the real question is - do we care about then next few weeks? Are we still trying to make the playoffs, or are we looking ahead to next year?
  15. I don't think too many people were disappointed with Hardy's rookie season after his second-half hot streak - I was mostly referring to his .187/.293/.267 first half, which caused him to get benched. I'm fairly certain Escobar can do better than that right now. I don't have anything to add, but I just wanted to bold Escobar MLEs, so Brewerfans aren't surprised when he shows he not ready to hit yet. I think that line is acceptable for a top-5 defensive shortstop. Not saying Escobar definitely is that, but there is more to baseball than hitting.
  16. True, but I don't think anybody expected Hardy to be quite *that* bad. I don't think Escobar will be that bad either, but you never know.
  17. Of course Macha will start Escobar, why would he want to "waste" Counsell's amazing bench bat on a measly starting position? Just like Hardy in his rookie season, Escobar is here for his defense first. If he can hit at anything close to an average level, he's immediately a good player/contributor. I still think Hardy is the better player right now, but I love Escobar's potential, both offensively and defensively. I look forward to watching him play.
  18. I wonder what All-Star 2B Junior Spivey is up to... this reminds me of one of my favorite Ben Sheets quotes, I think after Corey Hart won the final vote thingy: "Once you're an All-Star, you're always an All-Star. Even if you suck every year."
  19. The difference is just that he's not being outrighted - I guess technically he could be, but since he has options, the Brewers don't need to DFA and outright him in order to send him down.
  20. Basically, every player gets 3 years in the minors before they need to be added to the 40-man roster (otherwise, they become exposed to the Rule 5 draft). Guys on the 40-man then have 3 option years in which they can be demoted to the minors - if they are on the 25-man roster all season, they don't use up an option year. When a veteran who is out of option years gets sent down, he is outrighted (after being DFA'd). edit: I'm mixing up rules, clarity, etc. at least its not as bad as the NBA's CBA!
  21. How about DiFelice as a player-coach? He could teach everyone cutters, Mike Maddux style.
  22. Yeah...I don't get it, this just seems like a move to appease the "DO SOMETHING!" fans. Chris Bosio has been brought up on an interim basis.
