  1. The player Doug Melvin and a few other members of Brewer brass have compared Cain to is our own Cory Hart. The one difference between the 2 is Cain seems to have more of a sense of urgency to his game. That desire might allow him to develop defensively into a player capable of playing CF, something that hasn't happened for Hart. As for Periard, his results have never really matched his stuff, when you consider what good pitchers leagues the FSL and the SL are. He's still young, so hopefully he can work that ERA down at Huntsville this year. My guy Brent Brewer has an OPS of 770 as 20 year old in the AFL. Thats will be real impressive if he can maintain that over a larger sample. He is my breakout player for 2009. Think Lo Cain with the ability to play SS.
  2. I can't see Fielder ever being in the physical condition he was in during 2007, so I can't imagine he'd ever put up another season like that. Hopefully he has some life changing experience that makes him realize he's eating himself out of an opportunity to be one of the games historic players, but he hasn't shown any signs of realizing his continued weight gain is a problem. I can see Braun improving his plate discipline, and I think that will allow him to have more huge seasons.
  3. What evidence suggests this will happen? When have we had a top prospect hit well in AA, then struggle in AAA? If history is our guide, Escobar will hit even better in AAA, as all of our other top prospects have done. While I don't like bunting, his ability to bunt for hits makes it easier to believe he can consistently hold a high average.
  4. I'd say you've made all 12 pitchers worse with that defensive alignment. That the worst OF defense in the majors, and I don't think I'm being dramatic. You likely gain some offense, but not enough to justify the defensive losses. I think the reason most that want to deal Hart is because we could likely get a better pitcher for him than we could get for Cameron. Then we could add Abreu to the lineup without killing the defense. That plan isn't shortsighted, its with the longterm idea in mind that the Brewers have some high quality OF prospects soon to be ready.
  5. OPS is the only value a player has to a team? OPS is a good way to quickly compare players if there average defenders, but thats not even close to being true for Fielder. Fielders defense cost the Brewers wins in September just like it did April through August. Teams have won big without scoring a ton of runs. Having a 1B that can catch makes all 12 pitchers better. The Brewers finished 2nd in team ERA, but would have won more if they had finished 1st in team ERA. Lets not forget, we're not cutting Prince, the idea is to trade him for a quality starting pitcher. I think it will be easier to add a decent 1B than it will be to try to add a #2 type starting pitcher without dealing Prince. Also, the 1B we could aquire for almost nothing is Nick Johnson. Johnson is only mediocre defensively, but thats significantly better than Prince, and Johnson is an even better OBA guy. Mat Gamel can learn 1B at AAA, and I believe he's a major impact bat. Every other player who put up numbers like Gamel did in the Southern League turned out to be a superstar. Gamel doesn't play 3B well, and the OF is full, so 1B makes a ton of sense for him and the Brewers.
  6. Wow, I wish we'd have aquired Olsen if Florida was just giving him away. I don't get it either. I'm completely mystified how anyone sees this guy as a real player.
  7. The thing that suprised me about Hoffmans numbers were that his ERA and K totals were much better on the road this past season. That alleviates the concern I had about him just being a product of pitching at Petco. His road numbers were mediocre in 2007, but his road ERA was under 2 in 2006. Most players are better at home, but I don't see evidence of him being protected by a huge ballpark like I thought I'd see. Sign him up.
  8. D-Lee was dealing with repeated complications from a broken wrist. Vernon Wells played a full season with a partially torn hamstring, then a bum shoulder. Ryan Braun's numbers took a dive after pulling a muscle in his back. Rollins OPS was above his career OPS, not sure why that was a bad year for him. Jones relates more to Fieders woes. Jones career has spiralled downward at an early age as he continues to be extremely overweight. If you have any examples that don't help prove my point, I'd love to see them.
  9. His OPS was under 780 in August, he didn't have an OPS under 849 in 2007. His 2nd half OPS was 925, worse than 4 of his months in 2007. The most glaring stat to me though was that he didn't have a single month with an OPS over 1000, in 2007 his season OPS was 1013. Impossible to say he even approached his previous level. Care to list some examples?
  10. I don't think the Brewers can consider McClung for the closer role until they aquire enough starting pitchers to fill out the rotation. Also, as much as I like McClung, its difficult to rely on him. Tampa was planning on him to close for them to open 2007, until he showed up to spring traing fat and out of shape.
  11. Very true, which is why you trade Fielder. He was not 1 of the Brewers strengths this year. When defense is factored in, it negated most of his offense. Getting a 1B who can catch a ball makes all 12 pitchers better. Completely irrelevent, because we're talking about baseball? Fielder has clearly regressed at the plate, players don't have down years unless they're dealing with injury. It is very possible Fielder ends up like Bob Hamelin. Baseball has seen plenty of players get fat at the end of there careers, but very few who've gotten this overweight in there mid-twenties. I just don't think it will be that difficult to find a mid 800 OPS 1B who can play defense. The Brewers won't have to give up nearly as much to get him as they'll get in return for their overweight DH from some sucker team.
  12. Kennedy and Cabera don't do anything to help the Brewers, They would fit perfectly for a team like KC. Throw in a Brewer prospect, and get Zak Greinke. As for the Brewers CF whole created by the loss of Cameron, Tampa's Fernando Perez is the guy I target. Theres no starting spot available for him there, and I think he'd be a quality starter immediately. Got quality big league experience this year, was an On-base machine in the minors, very good defensively, with blazing speed, terrific intelligence and work ethic. Crisp has a 331 career OBA, thats 21 points lower than Weeks. I don't see how he's a leadoff type, and leadoff types don't improve a teams runs scored, increasing a teams OBA and slugging % does. Crisp is a switch hitter who can bat lefthanded, but he doesn't hit well from that side, with an OPS of just 706 from that side over the last 3 years. Cameron's OPS versus RHP over the last 3 years was 770. Thats hardly a big weakness.
  13. I saw those comments, and I think there funny. Zito and Kotsay try throwing Macha under the bus, even though they had the best seasons of there career playing for him. Both are crap now. They should give Macha some of their salary. Macha wins, Macha gets players to perform. Obviously, thats should be what a manager is expected to do.
  14. What direction would you like taken? Jack Z has seen a few of his scouts get scouting director jobs, and I'd think we'd have a quality in-house canidate to replace Jack Z.
  15. What evidence do you present that Macha was a total jerk, and that his players didn't play hard for him? He averaged 92 wins a year in his 4 years in Oakland. If that happened with the players only going 80 %, why has Oakland fell off since Macha left?
  16. Melvin gave Sveum an interview , and said it focused largely on mangerial strategy. Obviously, Sveum's old school approach didn't produce the answers Melvin was looking for. I give Melvin big credit for not taking the easy way out. You should hire the best manager possible no matter what situation your in. I'd expect Ken Macha to be named the Brewer manager any day. That will be an awesome hire.
  17. And how many runs did you equate we'd save from the defensive improvement of having a 1B that can actually play 1B? Improving the defense helps make up for some of the lost offense, and how do we know Fielder won't get even fatter and regress even more next season? Just because Fielder has been durable doesn't mean that will continue. Not a whole lot of massively overweight ironmen in baseball. The second injury problems start for Fielder his trade value will plummet. Johnson would be a good replacement, he's an even better OBA guy than Prince. he is injury prone, but we could have Gamel playing 1B in AAA, ready to be called up.
  18. Gwynn had a 328 OBA in AAA, as a league repeater. What has he done to earn a shot? Weeks outhit hit Gwynn, and Weeks did it in the majors. Gwynn should be traded or released this offseason. I would guess he's overvalued by some teams just because of his name, just like he is here. Mel Stocker is just as good as Gwynn, but nobody mentions him for starting duty. He should change his name to Mel Gwynn.
  19. Thers only 2 ways to increase runs scored, and 1 of them is to increase slugging %. A scout during the season called Brantley a future all-star, so that suggests that scout believes he'll increase his power. I don't think Green will ever approach all-star, but he can still be a solid starter. I've compared Green to Mike Fontonot before, and Fontonot would start for us. I'll miss Brantley, but the Crew still has a top farm system.
  20. Whats getting lost in the shuffle is the simple fact that CC isn't nearly as good as he has been for the Brewers. Before being traded here, the lowest ERA of his career was 3.21, thats not $150 million good. Before he started his contract push, he was grossly overweight. What going to happen when he gets the security of a 6 year deal? How many times has a 6 year contract to a 27year old pitcher turned out well? CC had a awesome hot streak, and I will always remember watching it. It was awesome. With that being said, whichever team signs him in the offseason will be burned badly by that contract. When emotion is pushed aside, all evidence points to him being a bad investment. If the Brewers want to make a major investment in a player this offseason, it should be in a player who can actually be expected to hold his performance for 6 years. That player is the dominant, unbelievably consistent, hardworking, goldglove 1B Mark Texeirra. He was drafted by Melvin, and could be yet another great former Ranger addition.
  21. Hudson was very good the last 2 years, but thats not what we'd be buying. He'll be 31 next year, and his highest OPS of his career is 817. We'd be paying big money for a player declining into average, and worse. I'll let someone else make that bad investment. Its very possible Weeks will have a higher OPS the next couple of years, and we won't pay him as much, we won't have to surrender a 1st round pick to get him, and we won't still be on the hook for him in 2011-2012, when Hudson would be 33-34.
  22. Todd Coffey, Tim Dillard, and Mark Difelice are all very viable bullpen options.
  23. The injury coincided with his slump, and prevented him from getting full extension on his swing. It scares me that the elbow tendonitis has prevented him from playing in the AFL. If his elbow can't handle a heavy workload, then he can't get the reps he needs to become a 3B. Another reason to move him to 1st. I wonder if they try to get him into the AFL for the 2nd half of the season once his elbow is fit?
  24. Peavy is perfect for us. As pitching prices continue to escalate, he could become a bargain. Brewers get: Jake Peavy Tampa gets: Prince Fielder San Diego gets: Tony Gwynn Jr., 3 pitching prospects from Tampa (pick from Jeff Nieman, James Houser, Chris Mason, Wade Davis, Jacob McGee, Wade Townsend, Glenn Gibson, Jeremy Hellickson) Fielder fits Tampa because he can DH there and could help with there horrible attendance. Tampa has 5 starting pitchers returning plus David Price, but could use more offense. The Brewers could sign Texeirra, Giambi or Delgado to play 1B, or go with Gamel or Nelson.
  25. What evidence is there that he will bounce back next year? Sure, players occaisionally have down years, but thats usually related to nagging injury. Who was this mystical lefthanded bat we had last season? You can't really be suggesting that Jenkin's 790 OPS from the 6th spot in the order is the reason Fielder was able to put up a 1.013 OPS last season, but having Cameron putting up a higher OPS in the 6th spot this season from the 6th spot has caused Fielder to slump to a 879 OPS because Cameron didn't bat lefthanded for 2/3s of his games? I'm thinking Fielders sunstancial weight gain is the most plausible reason for his regression. My argument was to spend the money some are suggesting we spend on CC on Mark Texierra. He's a switch hitter. Most importantly, Texierra is a goldglover, while Fielder is the worst defensive 1B baseball has seen in some time.
