  1. Trade form a weakness to add to a strength? Thats different than the way I'd do it. Not to mention, Dunn is a FA after the season. I will trade Hall for Edwin Encarnacion, if Cincy would want Hall as a SS, with Freel playing 3rd. However Jeff Keppinger has done real well for them at SS. Encaracion is a better OBP guy than most of what we have.
  2. Can we add a choice to the poll? I'd vote for," not until they replace Yost."
  3. I've called my shot in another thread already. Friday morning. Even though I realize Melvin is ultra conservative and will get fired himself before he realizes to let Yost go. By the way, Yost is 76-86 is his last 162 games.
  4. Sutton wasn't aquired untill September. What did he make, 3-4 starts? That team would have qualified as the wild card without Sutton if the present format had been in place. That team improved dramatically in the won loss column before Sutton came along.
  5. A career winner who is available right now is Mike Hargrove. He hasn't returned since losing a power struggle in Seattle to Ichiro. I find it funny that Ichiro is struggling this year. Hargrove is considered a terrific leader of men, and prefers to let his hitters hit, the preferred methodology of Doug Melvin.
  6. Ned Yost is 77-85 in his last 162 games. I'm predicting his Brewer tenure will be over Friday morning.
  7. Drafting a HS catcher , in your mind, is a can't miss oppurtunity? Do you realize they have the biggest bust rate of any players in the draft? They make HS RHPs look like conservative picks. Just look at how some recent HS catchers have faired so far. Look at the massive struggles of Devin Merasco or Max Sapp. Skipworth is an interesting player, but remember, in taking him, theres an excellent chance he'll bust. Back to Hunter, that is an interesting question. He seems to be pre-Tommy John surgury. While the Brewers haven't drafted players with elbow problems in the past, they have often picked up players just after TJ surgury. Its possible Hunter's elbow concerns dissipate with rest. The cause seems to be blisters, and not pitching directly. I think part of the reason the Brewers haven't drafted college pitching early yet is because they haven't had the opportunity to grab 1 with the power arm and upside of Hunter. The Brewers also seem to avoid the overworked college pitcher, and thats not Hunter. In the end, I still hope there's a worthwhile bat the steps to the front at 16. The Brewers have only selected pitchers in the past in years where there simply wasn't a bat to even consider.
  8. The Brewers had a somewhat similar team with a fidgety manager with similar results in 1982. GM Harry Dalton fired the manger, replaced him with a stoic, respected, veteran coach who just let the team relax and play, and the team took off. The obvious replacement for Yost is Ted Simmons, who was an integral part of that 82 team. I really hope Doug Melvin quits settling for mediocrity.
  9. Advice to Ned Yost: Quit. Find a new career in something you might be successful at. You've already managed too many seasons at the minor and major leagues, and all that losing isn't coincidence. Just move on with your life.
  10. Do they have the same value as established Major Leaguers? I highly doubt we could aquire a top starting pitcher for a prospect, that hasn't happened much historically. This is kind of similar to trading Overbay to open the door for Prince. Only problem was Overbay was not the caliber of player we're suggesting to deal now, so the Brewers only got Dave Bush. The Brewers may have overrated Bush a little too.
  11. Its just a question of who you'd prefer starting, Dave Bush or Matt Laporta. The Brewerrs have extra top caliber OF-1Bs, but not enough starting pitching.
  12. The Brewer farm system is week right now because of massive graduations. They drafted too well to have a good farm system right now. Are you saying that list is who you thought they should select before the draft, or is it who you still think that should have drafted? Fielder is better than Kazmir, Braun was rookie of the year last while Maybin is still in AA this year, Bard is a bi disappointment, and Laporta is a budding phenom who could make an impact in the bigs this year. Smoker is miles away.
  13. Ryan Howard played his AA ball when he was 24. He turned out OK. Its Laporta's 1st time seeing AA caliber pitching, and he's killing it. Thats all that really matters.
  14. Don't let Balfour and Thatcher gety you down (Balfour burned me too), theres plenty of stories of relievers who develop late and come from nowhere. The Brewers may have found 1 in the somewhat unherald Mitch Stetter. As for DiFelice, I see no reason why he couldn't match what Nelson Figueroa has done this year. Is there any other righthanded who gets as much milage out of a cutter?
  15. Every pitcher you mentioned signed for over slot value, and every pitcher except Lincecum is a Boras client and signed for well over slot value. The Brewers don't sign draft picks for over slot value. It sucks, but our owner simply doesn't fork over that kind of money to build his team. A couple of years ago, Melvin stated the teams research showed paying extra for Boras pitchers hadn't been a wise investment for teams. Its possible thats changed, though Miller and Kennedy have struggled in the majors, and Hochevar and Scherzer have only made a few starts. Also, this is Melvins 7th season with the Brewers. Sheets, Fielder, Hall, Hart, Hardy, and Parra (and Jack Z) were already in the organization when he took over. If the team is out of contention by July, then he should be fired, and Jack Z should be promoted immediately. Its Melvin that has made the decision to stick with Yost, and he should be held completely accountable for it. I hope it doesn't come to this.
  16. If we leave Laporta in the minors that long, he'd break the minor league all-time home run recordhttp://forum.brewerfan.net/images/smilies/smile.gif Seriously, some teams call guys up straight from AA, and have success with it. Laporta may not have played a full season as a pro yet, but he did play a year longer in college than most. The main reason most prospects stay longer in the minors is because no one has ever hit like Laporta has. The only guy in recent years who compares in Miguel Cabera (1.038 OPS in 266 ABs in AA Southern League). He was just 20 at the time, was called up to the bigs, helped Florida in the playoffs, and batted cleanup in the world series.
  17. Trading Hart completely hinges on whether the Brewers feel his is our CF of the future. Our future OF lays out very nicely if Hart is the future CF, but the evidence right now strongly suggests he isn't. Hart is very valuable because of his all around game, and is very similar to Alex Rios, the player San Fran may have wanted for Tim Lincecome this past offseason. True , pitchers get injured, which is why the Brewers need to add another pitcher. But when your replacement for the injured pitcher is Dave Bush, and your replacement for Hart is Matt Laporta, trading for the pitcher would likely make you a better team.
  18. While Jones is a bust, and Rogers is a long ways away, going the college route in those years wouldn't have changed much. The 2 college arms some prefered in 2004 were Jeremy Sowers and Thomas Diamond. They have also been duds to date, and Sowers couldn't even be considered by Jack Z, as he demanded over slot money. The Brewers did make the best selection of the 2004 draft, getting Yo Gollardo in round 2. Thats awesome when you consider what a horrible draft the 2004 draft has been so far. In 2001, the next 4 college pitchers taken after Jones are 2 inconsistent middle relievers Aaron Hielman and Brad Hennessy, and 2 small college nobodies, Justin Pope and Jason Bulger. While I agree the Brewers need pitching at the MLB level, I just don't think drafting it is the best way for the Brewers to aquire it. The Twins traded Matt Garza for OF help, and the Giants made Matt Cain and Tim Lincecome available this past offseason for a young stud slugger, but the Brewers couldn't jump into that because they didn't have a replacement available for there young sluggers they have in place on the big club. With Laporta and Gamel being ready next year, the Brewers will be able to get involved into these type of deals. The Brewers have an excellent track record of drafting and developing hitters, and should stick to what they do best. Let other teams be the suckers who roll the dice on pitching.
  19. I fairly certain if a teams claims T-bow, they are on the hook for his remaining salary. Teams only have to pay a player the minimum salary if T-bow cleared waivers and was then given he outright release, thus making him a FA. Since T-bow doesn't have the service time to refuse assignment, I doubt the Brewers would give him his outright release. Either way, I'm guessing this ends in T-bow being traded.
  20. Lost in Laporta's continued awesomeness is another good outing from Dereck Miller. He now has a 2.05 ERA this season, and was solid in 11 AA starts last season. He is ready for a ticket to Nashville.
  21. Every year we see relievers with guaranteed money stink it up early, and get flipped for another reliever doing the same thing. Its happened to Jorge Julio a couple times. I'm guessing Turnbow gets dealt for another struggling reliever like Mike Timlin or Jorge Sosa. The Brewers don't have a good option to replace Turnbow, as Luis Pena is off to a slow start at AAA.
  22. For all the hype Garrison has gotten this year, he has a 4.50 ERA so far. The Brewers have 5 lefty starters in AA with ERAs of 3.52 or better. Sure, Garrison is younger, but that just changes his ETA, not his ceiling. I'd be geeked out of my gord if a pitcher like Rogers or Jeffress puts up numbers at AA like Inman has. They actually profile as quality big league pitchers, theres no questions about how there stuff will translate at the MLB level. However, those questions do remain with Inman. His AA success does nothing for the concerns of how his big curve and tendency to challenge hitters up in the zone with an average, straight fastball will fair against MLB hitters. Also, he has yet to prove he can pitch a full season without his arm wearing out.
  23. I said it for years, and I'll say it again. For all the good things Doug Melvin has done, his lovefest for Derrick Turnbow has killed the Brewers. I was blsted for that statement last year, but I doubt I will be this time. Melvin should have dumped Turnbow's contract in the offseason, we teams actually wanted him.
  24. Matt Laporta has been fast tracked so far, why stop now. He is starting to abuse the Southern League. What an awesome draft pick.
