  1. Thats great news, Canning is part of the thriftyness in Milwaukee, so he won't give the Cubs any sort of competitive edge. Much more appealing to a Brewers fan than the scrubs getting Mark Cuban.
  2. Sounds like the guy Yost snapped on is JJ Hardy. Certainly deserving, as he has been in a daze for months now.
  3. BJ is still just 22, and has a 968 OPS this season. Thats awesome for anyone, and he plays 2B and CF. Most important, he reportedly has started to mature as a person. I am happy for the D-Backs, though, and hope it helps them out so I can see some playoff baseball in person this year. I'm really hoping you get to see a D-backs/Brewers series.
  4. I think Mike Hargrove would be a perfect fit. He's a winner, a leader of men, has developed young players, and his style of play matches the players on our roster
  5. Do all the Krembles backers realize he is in love with small ball? He is not a good fit for this team, he is a better fit as a minor league manager.
  6. Nice work by Melvin to poke a hole in the bereahvment list. Originally the league said Linebrink wasn't eligible, because childbirth wasn't on the list of excuses. Melvin then called back to see if family surgury was, and it was. Linebrinks wife had a C section, which is a surgury. Childbirth should be added to the list. Weeks to AAA is the right thing to do. Why try let get him to straighten himself out here, when he can do it in AAA? He still has a terrific future, but this probably isn't his year. I've been pimping Dillon for awhile now, he's very deserving. Also, Dessens is a better pitcher than he showed earlier in the year.
  7. Last offseason, Justin Speier, Chad Bradford, Roberto Hernandez, and Danys Baez all signed FA deals with new teams as type A FAs. Teams also recieve a 1st round supplemental for type B FAs. Mike Stanton and Jamie Walker fit that category last offseason.
  8. I really hope the Brewers are sniffing around Laird as part of this deal, just to keep him from the scrubs. This does complicate things though, as we'd have to find a suitor for Estrada. Whats he worth, and who'd want him?
  9. The guy the Dodgers would be dealing Kershaw for is Joe Blanton.
  10. Thats a very solid offer, and welcome aboard. Its smart to include Turnbow in the deal, because the Brewers bullpen would be overfull by adding Gagne, and teams have an unhealthy fascination with T-bow. Everyone sees his power arm and think they can fix him. If Maddux and Castro can't do it, it can't be done. 1 thing I think holds Gagnes value back a little is his contract is 3 times as much as Linebrinks. Whoever adds Gagne is increasing there payroll by $2 million. The Brewers only added about $700 K in Linebrink. Also, I'd love to expand the deal and get C Gerald Laird, who Texas is shopping after aquiring Saltalamacchia. Laird is arguably the best throwing catcher in baseball, and had an OPS over 800 last year. He started slow at the plate this year, but has heated up recently.
  11. Apparently, the Brewers were to receive Okalima. Too bad this didn't go down. The Red Sox have been after Turnbow since the offseason. Link
  12. I could see a Gross/Dillon platoon if the Brewers can't find something better, but I don't think I'd want Dillon as a fulltimer.
  13. Lohse has a 4.58 ERA and averages more innings per start than Vargas. They're pretty similar. All the Reds got for him was a finesse lefty with unispiring stats at AA, and he has pedestian stuff. I fail to see how you think this is such a great haul.
  14. Laporta is making a successful debut tonight.
  15. According to the New York Post, the Rangers might consider trading catcher Gerald Laird and a reliever to the Cubs for centerfield prospect Felix Pie. Makes sense, especially if the Rangers go against our GM's advice and take Salty. I'd love to substitute Pie for Gwynn, throw in a guy from our deep AAA relief core, and get Laird and Benoit. Laird would be a massive upgrade defensively over Estrada, and has heated up at the plate recently after a slow start. His OPS was over 800 last year, and we'd control him for 3 more years. What don't you like about Laird, or are you just real high on Pie?
  16. I agree LF is a probable hole, and we have no closer for next year. I also think catcher is a hole, as Estrada is too poor defensively to tolerate his poor OBA. While its not a position, team OBA is a hole, and all additions made to this team should be players with a high OBA. The closer hole is very important, because this team will have so many save oppurtunities. The great news is, the LF and catcher can bat 7th and 8th in this lineup, so its not like in years past where the hole that needed to be filled needed to be ideally a cleanuphitter.
  17. As we've seen this year, players with extreme splits aren't nearly as useful as they used to be, because starting pitchers pitch so few innings. You can start your lefty masher against lefties, but the lefty only pitches 2/3 of the game, and the extreme splits player is forced to take important ABs against pitchers who can easily exploit him. I was a big fan of platooning entering the season, but that has lost some of its luster with me.
  18. You can now see why the Brewers had to pay such a high price for Linebrink. The cost of help is through the roof, likely because theres so few good players available. definately a good deal for both teams.
  19. It sounds like Pena would go to the Sox with Okajime, but I wish I knew what the Brewers were getting? Dealing Turnbow could be addition by subtraction. Better to deal him now while he still has value, as he's on the fringe of a meltdown like he had last year. He hasn't pitched as well as his 4.30 ERA, as his inherited runners ratio is terrible, and thats the type of ERA you try to replace.
  20. I am for replacing Weeks with Hall, but the guy who has earned a promotion is Joe Dillon, who now has an OPS well over 1000 at AAA. The team could also send down a pitcher, and recall Gross to form a platoon in RF that would likely far out-produce Weeks this year. With Weeks wrist injuries, this just isn't going to be his year.
  21. When Melvin mentioned a number of pitching prospects we have that he thought were as good of prospects as Inman, Pena was a name he mentioned.
  22. Actually, I was speaking from 1st hand knowledge. My wife has been induced twice, so I think I'm very qualified to speak about the situation.
  23. I don't mean to be insensitive here, but he gets paid over $2 million to pitch. Fly in a relative, hire a nanny. The team is good enough to take some time, but I'd think a day to day and a half would be plenty. He is taking advantage of the team if he misses wedsdays night game for a birth being induced Monday morning. I think he can make up for lost time November through January.
  24. The original poster is maybe venting a little, but he is not too far off. The team is presently on pace to win 87 games. However, after the 24-10 start, they've went 33-39. At that pace for the rest of the season, they'd win 82-83. While I hope the team suddenly changes from what they've been the last 72 games, I wish there was more evidence that hinted towards that.
  25. I think your confusing predictions with expectations. My expectation is at least 88 wins and a playoff spot. My prediction is, unless something changes to alter the current inertia of this team, we win 82-85 games. This is year 5 of the Doug Melvin era, and 82 wins should not be acceptable, and I don't think they do either. The Linebrink deal showed what where they think this team should be this year. I'd be disappointed if we all didn't share those expectations.
