  1. This guy has always been fairly effective, so why did the Reds release him. Did he asked to be released, or did the have to clear a 40 man roster spot for somebody? Was this related to the Reds call-up of Todd Frazier? Whatever the reason, Herrera is a nice addition who shouldn't have lasted this long on the waiver wire.
  2. Good to see Kentrail Davis heating up. If he doesn't hit, it could be a very short tenure for Bruce Sied. Also great to see Santo Manzinillo find some control. I wonder if they'll stretch him out into a stating role? Even if his future is in the pen, it would better his development if he were a starter now. They need to get the most out of every power arm they have. In unsurprising news to me, Eric Farris is still a non-prospect. Speed is a non-factor when you sport a 609 OPS.
  3. I'm in. Love it. that would be tough to have a brother like his. He's getting it from all directions. Love the mafia involvement.
  4. The reason a few more players end up with Seattle is because their Japanese ownership heavily scouts Japan. If they prefer west coast teams, why don't any sign directly with the Angels? Simple, because they don't scout Japan. The big names might prefer cities with heavy Asian population for marketing reasons, but those aren't the bargains the Brewers should be seeking out anyway. The Brewers should be scouring Japan for pitchers like Saito, Okajima, Kawakami, and Uehara. You can't tell me that if the Brewers had offered Saito $800 K out of Japan that he'd still took the Dodgers $500 K offer. Just like American FAs, they sign with the highest bidder.
  5. Like I said, Japanese players are willing to play in the Midwest. Saito isn't the 1st, and won't be the last.
  6. Love it, I've always liked Saito, and prefer all my relievers on 1 year deals. This guy is one of the more underappreciated players in baseball. 2 moves I love in 1 offseason? What the heck is happening?
  7. Betancourt and Escobar were each .6 WAR last year.
  8. Just a reminder, Grienke was 9.4 Wins Above Replacement in 2009. The most valuable player in all of baseball. The highest value last season was Josh Hamilton, with just 8 WAR, and the most valuable pitcher was Cliff Lee, with 7.2 WAR. I think its at least possible for Grienke to have another season like that.
  9. That's an excellent point that needs repeating.
  10. Love it. Melvin finally realized how overrated Escobar was. He also got full value for Jeffress despite him being a reliever. After the Lawrie deal I thought we'd have no chance to get Greinke. Now we not only land him, but we also still have our top pitching prospect, Mark Rogers. Doug Melvin, just when I thought you couldn't get any lower, you go ahead and do something like this, and totally redeem yourself!
  11. I was lazy, I just put on my theory of evolution to robots t-shirt and went as Dr Sheldon Cooper (Big Bang Theory).
  12. I wasn't planning on going out for Halloween, but now my schedule has freed itself up. Need last minute ideas, so whatever it is needs to be kind of simple. I figured the creative minds of Brewerfan would have better ideas than anything I'd come up with. Thanks in advance.
  13. Toronto absolutely belongs on this list. They have a ton of JP Riccardi's mistakes coming off the books. They're in great financial shape, they could have excess starting pitching with the return of Dustin McGowan, they have no 1B for next year, and have an aggressive GM.
  14. The last guy I want is Money. He already drove me nuts as Nashville's manager. He should be replaced, not promoted. His supposed strength is teaching defensive fundamentals, and all our players played for him in the minors. Clearly, those teachings weren't effective, and he's a brutal strategist.
  15. You can't judge a GM bad his transactions only. What about the moves he didn't make? His biggest failure as a GM is the fact that he hasn't traded for a pitcher in over 2 years. A GM with this much tenure should be judged by his record, not his moves. His record is bad.
  16. Nobodies been spoiled by anything. The offense is good, but not great, as its been killed by the pathetic, though predictable, performances of Gomez and Escobar. Hard to say people are spoiled by an offense thats just 4th in the NL.
  17. I agree that Kentrail not making BA top 20 is extremely odd. BA loved Kentrail in college, then he puts up a mid-900 OPS in the MWL during what could have been his college junior season. He also shows a much better arm than BA reported for him, and is now a potentially a plus defensive RF. All this leads to BA suddenly thinking he's a bum? Is BA even aware that Kentrail played most of the season on 2 bad hamstrings? Did they do any homework here? BA gets an error on this one.
  18. These rosters will look much different because AAA will be filled with minor league FA's, as always. Most of last years Huntesville team will repeat that level. It will be interesting to see if they seperate Dykstra and Gennet and let Dykstra move back to 2B. Another question is where they put Farris if he's still here. I'm guessing he moves down to AA. Also, will Kentrail Davis stay in RF, or will they try him in CF again. It would be odd to see a player that thick playing CF.
  19. Can you name some examples of this? The only time its happened was Richie Sexson, and that was years ago when the Brewers were just beginning their rebuilding process. Carlos Lee wasn't dealt in the offseason, and they kept Coco Cordero. 1 time in 8 years and you call that an established method of operation?
  20. His instincts kill him in the OF. 1B is all about hand-eye coordination, which he has.
  21. If the Brewers signed Crawford and moved Braun to 1B, even if Braun defended 1B as bad as Fielder, the Brewers defense would still be about 40 runs better. Thats an awesome improvement. Then throw in that Braun will likely be better than Fielder at 1B. I realize Braun was a bad 3B, but just imagine what Fielder would be as a 3B. Braun would be better just by being an average sized target that can bend at the waist.
  22. Miller Park is about neutral in the adjustment, so it won't change anything.
  23. Which teams? Have you even looked at the finances of other teams? The Giants need offense, but they can't afford them. I've been told the Yanks will sign Lee, plus they have to resign Jeter and Rivera, that will be all they can do. The Phillies are over-budget. The Mets are way over-budget. The Angels, Braves, and Cardinals budgets are pretty much full, no room for a major FA. The Dodgers are a mess. The Rays are slashing payroll. There's basically enough players for the teams that can actually spend on them. They might cut $5 million off the budget, but that still leaves more than enough for a major FA signee. $15 million would be a PR nightmare.
  24. I threw up a little in my mouth. Based on what? He was clearly better at 2B than 3B last year, and that was when he was playing on a bum knee. He has actually defended well in the 2nd half this season. He can play deep at 2B, and let his arm do all the work there.
  25. Not to mention this is yet another scenario where the suggestion is being made that we slash payroll by $25 million. That's not happening! If the team trades 2 hitters, it will sign 1. Werth, Crawford, or Beltre would help keep this a formidible offense. If Weeks is dealt, I'd think McGehee would slide over to 2B, with Gamel at 3B, or the OF, depending on which FA we sign. McGehee was OK at 2b last year, despite a bad knee. McGehee seems to have lost weight and gained agility as this season progresses. He's actually defended pretty well in the 2nd half. He'd likely look much better at 2B now than he did last year.
