  1. True. Like I said, the Brewers will have to throw in prospects too, because Grienke is far more valuable than Fielder. Detroit will have to clean out their system just to get Fielder, I don't see them having enough to get Greinke, even if they wanted to.
  2. The NL league average for starters this year is 4.10, so even with this hot streak Wolf isn't even average. Going forward, age will likely start to affect him. He'll be 35 before next season is over. Wolf is .7 WAR this year, he's grossly over-paid. Lilly is over-paid this year, but has earned every dollar over the life of his FA deal with the Cubs, rare for a FA pitcher.
  3. I would hope this becomes a 3 way deal so we can get what we really need. While Melvin doesn't even seek out 3 team deals, Dave Dombrowski has no problem getting them done. Melvin will ask for a MLB pitcher, and Dombrowski will go find one. Greinke would be best, with the Brewers also throwing in some prospects, just not our top guys.
  4. If we deal for Grienke, keep Fielder, sign Beltre, and a FA catcher, and a FA pitcher, the Brewers would be way way over budget. I do have to say congratulations though, for being the 1st person to have a roster projection for next season that is over-budget. I've grown really sick of all the projections that are $25 million under-budget.
  5. When we wonder how the Brewers continue to be such a bad franchise, nothing sums it up better than a discussion of who's better, Doug Davis or Jon Garland. Sadly, this option wasn't to fill the 5th starter spot.
  6. The Brewers are presently sitting at pick #11, and they're actually closer to pick # 9 than they are to #12. The Cubs are red hot, and are really moving up. This draft looks so much better than last years, simply based on the quality college bats available.
  7. The difference is the Brewers actually have money available to do that. Have you looked at the Giants payroll commitments for next year? They're going to be pretty tight. They can buyout Renteria, but Uribe is also a FA, so they'll need to keep 1 of them, or add a SS. Sanchez, Cody Ross, and breakout player Andres Torres are arby eligible. Huff is a FA and needs to be retained. Cain and Lincecum get big raises. The Giants will have to seriously consider moving an expensive pitcher if they want to add offense. Top FAs are out of the question for them.
  8. Wolf is 34 years old, and has had an ERA under 4.30 just once in the last 6 years. I doubt his numbers next year will be any better than there are right now. I would think he'll have a bout with command issues again next year, as it happens to all control pitchers with mediocre stuff. He's tollerable, but its a stretch to even expect league average.
  9. Can you tell me who we traded Ben Sheets or Mike Cameron for? Surly you can see a difference between Cam's 2 year deal, Sheets unique injury situation, and a player coming to the end of his team controlled 6 year run. I'm not sure what you mean about Sheets injury situation? Al claims when players enter their final year of contract, their extended or traded. Sheets entered 2008 in the last year of his contract. Under Al's generalization, he'd been dealt before the year started. Also, i'd much rather be called surly than Shirley, so no offense taken.
  10. Cain had an option for 2012, and that was re-done in spring training. He now is a signed player through 2012. He'd be a good get for Fielder. How does keeping the same team improve their offense? Huff has played half his games in the OF this year, so they could keep him and add Fielder.
  11. For Sheets we have a playoff appearance, which is the goal. I'm not saying they can't deal Weeks, just pointing out that Al's generalization once again lacks fact.
  12. False. There are a couple differences. Post 2002 calcs use UZR, pre use Total Zone and positional adjustments are based by decade and from Sean Smith’s positional adjustments instead of Tangotiger. What does that matter, it was already stated that the major difference in value here is coming from their offense anyway.
  13. Can you tell me who we traded Ben Sheets or Mike Cameron for?
  14. It was just speculation. That's just speculation too. Not every player who's a pending FA is dealt.
  15. So you think they're going to slash payroll by $20 million next year? That's rather extreme. They'll sign a FA, just not a pitcher. If they deal Fielder for Greinke, then sign Werth, Crawford, or Beltre, they'll be about 5 WAR better, thats a huge improvement. They'd also still have a surplus of position players. By dealing a 2nd hitter, they make themselves a winning team and possible contender. Greinke also will be our ace in 2012 too. Why wouldn't you want that? How many years do you plan on taking to rebuild?
  16. I agree. Hopefully whoever is interested in Fielder has a GM who pursues 3 team deals. Detroit would fit that description. Greinke is exactly what we need. Brewers Out: Fielder Gomez Rivas In: Greinke Tigers Out: Brennan Boesch Jacob Turner Andrew Oliver In: Fielder Royals Out: Greinke In: Boesch Turner (stud prospect and Missouri native helps Royals with the PR hit of dealing an ace pitcher) Oliver Gomez Rivas Edit: Thanks Tri7
  17. Exactly, this is why Hardy is so much more valuable to winning than Escobar. Hardy is the rare SS with power, while Escobar is a poor OBP hitter. The most disappointing thing about Escobar is that the more he hits in the majors, the more teams exploit his sloppy approach.
  18. Is it really a big leap of faith to blame a GM for losing teams? And by the way, where did I blast him? I simply pointed out that the owner put the blame on him. Gee, he could maybe trade for a pitcher. He hasn't traded for a single pitcher in over 2 years. Pretty unbelievable for a team that new it was in a pitching crisis since the day CC signed with the Yankees. Give Peterson some power arms to work with, then evaluate him. I would too if he would have done it 7 years ago. Waiting 8 years into his tenure seems a little too late.
  19. Peterson's job is not in jeopardy in any way, shape, or form. Has a Brewers pitcher starting pitcher under-achieved? Attanosio has already put the blame of our pitching woes squarely on the shoulders of the man who deserves it, Doug Melvin. Peterson is one of the strengths of this organization.
  20. I agree. I think its helped the last few years the Nichols had his responsibilities decreased. Now they just need to go the rest of the way with it.
  21. Then just compare them to the players of their era then. Yount was dominant his era in WAR. Braun has never been near the top, he hasn't even finished among the top 25 of position players in WAR.
  22. Nope. Escobar was bad all season. He didn't have a single good month. He has a homerun hitters swing but the strength of a 14 year old. He needs to dramatically change his approach, and that change shouldn't happen in the majors. We talked about it non-stop. Most think it was Melvin's 1st bad move with the Brewers. Good minor leaguers eventually might need MLB development time, but Escobar wasn't good in AAA last year. He had a 768 OPS. It was easy to foresee his failure this year.
  23. Hardy continues to hit well in the 2nd half, and has increased the margin that he's been better than Escobar. Hardy was 2 1/2 times more WAR when the thread started, now he's just a tick under 4 times more WAR. Hardy's OPS is up to 722, while Escobar's down to an embarassing 628. Wasting 1 of Escobar's cheap seasons this year is just another brutal Doug Melvin move. Escobar is in dire need of another year in AAA.
  24. Not to mention that we control him in 2016 in either scenario. By letting him have about 8 AAA starts next year, we'd extend his control in 2017. I think he has awesome potential, and I think this team could contend next year if Melvin can do his job. However, for them to contend, they'll need starting pitching depth. Rogers should be that depth. Someone from next years opening day rotation will either struggle, or get injured, and we'll need to turn to AAA for help. If we don't acquire 2 quality starting pitchers for next season, we'll be short on pitching by June, just like every other year.
